  • A Certain Ratio is one of my top five bands. I was 18 when this EP was out, I'm hearing it again now after all these years, and I remember each single note. Really amazing music and times.

  • When Noel Gallagher goes off on one of his diatribes... if it wasn't for The Pistols/Clash/Roses/Smiths etc. etc. he would do well to remember ACR.

  • my sister Lisa used to have every 12" single they released.

  • Nils Butler's model promotion vid sent me here. ;]

  • i totally agree that they are absolutely underrated. who cares? this is funky sh*t and WE WANT MORE!

  • fucking great

  • shake it babeeeeh !!!!

  • soooo funky!

  • White boy funk at its finest

  • They're playing Band on the Wall tonight (11/11/11) for nyone that's interested..

  • Love those basslines.

  • that's freakin' awesome..

  • The Revolting Cocks sort-of covered this cover, using the same melody with new lyrics by Jourgensen and half-heartedly spoken by Chris Connelly.

  • somebody repost this video and replace the audio with better sound (use the other copy of this sans video footage on youtube)

  • Nice cover by a great post punk band.

  • Better than joy division

  • @tshhtf not a chance buddy

  • LOVE THE BREAKBEAT!

acr were truly cool, they influenced Talking Heads BIG TIME!

  • @lordvespatron MY FATHER WROTE AND RECORDED THIS SONG, THEN IT WAS STOLEN FROM HIM WHEN HE REFUSED TO RECORD UNDER THE NAME BANBARRA. THIS SONG WAS ORIGINALLY RECORED BY JOE CARTER AND HIS BAND S.A.R (SOULFOLK, AMERICAN, REGGAE)... IF U THINK THIS TRACK IS FUNKY, I HAVE THE ORIGINAL. IT FEAT. THE WORLD FAMOUS DENNIS CHAMBERS ON PERCUSSION

  • @SingonKey Will you upload it?

  • @lordvespatron Actually in an interview with Paul Morley ACR have admitted to having been influenced by Talking heads, presumably while supporting them on a tour in Britain, which was in 1978/1979 I suppose.

  • @lordvespatron No break mate ,its a real drummer .!!!

  • this video clip should be mixed with the audio of the audio only shack up clip on youtube

  • They deserve more attention then they deserve it's a shame ACR are ignored.

    Anyway classic song.

  • @ColumRogers we put them on at offset festival in 2009!

Reminds me of Brady's in Brixton...wot a shit hole and me love it, if you slipped and fell on your ass in the toilets then you just drank it off coz no ambulances were coming into dat hot zone. All u knew for sure woz cum Monday, VD Clinic

  • Dave Gahan's been singing "Shack up, baby" during the breakdown of "Enjoy the Silence" - pretty random reference, but cool nonetheless...

  • I remember that, I went to a few shows on this tour and the first time he did it was in the last one I went to, Las Vegas.

  • Someone out there...plz post " Touch" again....I know it was there before. Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • I remember this tune. Interesting write up to.

  • There's loads of new bands ripping off this era of music...the wheel keeps turning! SHACK UP- great tune though!

  • They will nebver be as good as this though.

  • An influence on Haircut 100 and Franz Ferdinand

  • Someone asked where this was filmed. It's in their rehearsal studio.

    A right pit.

  • my favourite LP

  • A Certain Ratio's amazing funky sound was inspired by bands such as Parliment, Funkadelic and Earth, Wind & Fire. They don't like the comparisons to Joy Division and listening to this i can understand why. Love ACR Your ROCK!!!!

  • vaya mierda de playback. pero pedazo de tema.

  • Lip sync baby lip sync....the record says 1980, kids...

  • not a bad cover at all.

  • oh yes. original comes from Banbarra,

  • but i still like this version a little more, crazy!!

  • funky

  • Dude this is awesome, listen this funk bass line, early Red Hot Chilli Peppers sounds very similar, five stars to Certain Ratio.

  • the earliest of house tunes ;-)

  • yeah-try Shriekback or early level 42-go the chillis tho-coffeeee shop!

  • someone out there plz post TOUCH once again....thank you so much

  • well this is alright...but i like banbara's version better...for bboying

  • I heard this verion when it came out (yeah I'm dating myself) and thought this was the original til rap and sampling really hit and I heard somebody play the "Banbarra" version. I actually like both versions equally. The Banbarra's "Shack Up Pt 2" with just the lead guitar ain't bad either.

  • cool info you got , nice one

  • SHACK UP!!!

  • So fun -- used to dance around my room to this in my tight black pegged pants and winkle pickers. Now I'm a fat old middle aged wanker and you should see me dancing around to it front of my computer. (maybe not).

  • lmfao :D

  • @ClueSign

Thanks for at least a minute of laughter. I appreciate your humility and humor.

I've managed, with effort, to remain thin at 38 but must sound ridiculous singing this in the shower...and fuck it, I still wear glitter make-up.

  • @ClueSign

Thanks for at least a minute of audible laughter. We aging hipsters need irony to curb absurdity--mine involving singing this in the shower.

  • @ClueSign Yes I can identify completely. I too had black pegged pants and winkle pickers and truly loved this song. I wonder do young people today get as much out of their music as we did in our day?

  • @ClueSign I just transfered Graveyard from Cassette to my computer (Wow) and this old fart was dancing to Genotype/Phenotype. The evening I first heard "To Each" was a Ah Ha moment for sure. They were the best and those were incredible days for music.

  • @ClueSign LOL. I was doing the exact same thing as a middle age wankeress.

Au Pairs, Gang of Four, this.. my youth slaps me in the face

  • @MsAmsterdamned Just be pleased you cottoned on to this kinda stuff THEN...and rest on your laurels knowing that it was a great era for music and that today's music is shit in comparison !! ; )

  • @ClueSign Post Vid Plox

  • Try a bit of Touch

  • love the trumpets! great old punk. I recommend Knife slits water! WNUR Evanston!!! mike lev, Glenn Savarti!! Jer obanions punk

  • Fuckin Tune!!!!!!!!!!!

  • wasnot shack up the best 1980 song rivalled only by the Passions

  • WARDROBE YOU SON OF A BITCH!

  • These guys have got the funk

  • Big up da man like Simon Topping. ACR were a massive influence.......way ahead of their time.

pre Nine inch Nails, 10 Maniacs. Post punk meets funk. Breaks r reborn, re/animated! Like Meat Beat Manifesto!

  • Yup, you're almost as fat as your IQ is low. That's quite fat.

  • was ACR going through a transition at this time? Sounds a bit like Pop Group.

  • Martin Moscrop teaches in my department at college!

  • Used to love this

  • li ho visti nell 82

  • shack up guys

  • this is a tune from the 1960s by Banbarra

    its on Blue Note

  • 1960s? I thought the Banbarra release was 1975. Doesn't sound very 60s to me!

  • It was 1970s. You're right.

  • the business for mancs lufc

  • remember seeing these :ritz manchester, kept us waiting till after midnight.worth it though

  • PUNK FUNK like:

    Pere Ubu

"the idiot" album by Iggy Pop

    E.S.G

    RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS

  • da intellettuale musicale o meno non credo tu te la stia scopando sul serio in questo video, comunque onore ai suoni "astract-jazz"

  • RIP Tony Wilson

  • rusha titsa offa love 80s80s

  • get amongst it

  • we have just worked out that Dead 60's - Loaded Gun has blatantly ripped this tune off, go and check out the dead 60's on here then listen to this tune, loaded gun is also pretty good tho.

  • you're totally right, it's the same guitar

  • turuturu tuturu! shack up!!

    Pinche rola bien verga!!!

    (^_^) :D

  • what a load of bollox - did they ever make another tune? and this one isn't even theirs. Hello Jez how's it going mate still plugging away?

  • that's odd.

  • sweet.

  • Who would have thought this band would inspire one of the biggest bands of the 80s/90s/00s??

They were doing it 2 years beforehand too - RHCP

flea has said these were his main influence...

  • More importantly than RHCP they with New Order helped kick start the rave movement. They were the soundtrack of the Hacienda and a link to the downtown New York scene (they were often played at Paradise Garage by Larry Levan).

  • Who did they inspire?

  • !!!, Rapture, Liars, Neils Children, Electricity in Our Homes, Fischerspooner...

  • Never heard of any of them

  • génial ce groupe , ils avaient résolument un son a eux dans les 80, découvrez la voix du rythme

  • ACR/the pop group two of the greatest bands to ever be commited to reel.

  • I'd Like to See You Again is one of my favorite ACR albums. They were really tight & so so funky. Thanks for the post!

  • moscrop you dog

  • They are like.... the rapture parents.... in my opinion

  • comparing joy division and a certain ratio is a bit silly--they were completely different. now, if you want to compare acr and gang of four, i'll give you a good fight (i like acr, but "entertainment" blows everything similar out of the water). as for any comments denigrating joy division, you must be fucking kidding me. even if ian curtis hadn't died, all you have to do is play "she's lost control" or, the best, "love will tear us apart." their stature is based on their brilliant music.

  • I'd say "New Dawn Fades" to be the best Joy Division song ever.

  • son buenos eh!

    ese sonido muy de ellos!

    el batero es un makina!

han oido los dub de este grupo!

    son buenisimos

    a rescatarlos!

  • A Certain Ratio es el ritmo por exelencia. Muchos son los recuerdos que me traen. No conocía este vídeo de los propios músicos. Gracias.

  • were these from Wythenshawe?

  • I gave it an extra star just for the crotch shots on the drummer!

  • ACR isn't even in the same dimension as Joy Division... It's like comparing Robbie Williams to John Lennon!

  • cruzion, you`re wrong my friend! I was around at the time and well into the factory bands, and saw acr and jd on the same bill... everyone around me agreed acr were the better band. History has not been kind to acr, But without a doubt, it was acr that instigated the crossover to serious dance music in the uk. the jd myth is built upon the death of curtis, they weren`t that good mate!

  • I agree, ACR's first 4 albums are as good as anything Joy Division or New Order ever did.

I do think JD are a great band though. With today's parade of depressive, whiny loser popstars JD may not seem that unique, but at the time they were completely original.

  • You`re right mate, I think I went a bit far with that comment about them not being that great. But I do think that ian curtis` sad death somehow elevated the mystique about the band.

I also think that If Bowie had died in his prime, he would be receiving more recognition for his genius (which he desrves) than he does today.

That said, it would probably mean today we`d be suffering a glam revival by these very same whiny loser popstars who can`t seem to drum up an original idea between them!

  • </3 Tony Is gone </3

  • Loved 'em so much, walked out of the hammersmith show before new order came on - acr blew them away (shocking reference, apologies). Heard "looking for certain ratio"? 90s remixes, only a couple of duds.

  • On the contrary. I think they made it their own.

  • Love this band.

  • deyoungparker you got that line from the film 24 hour party people you cheating twat

  • deyoungparker you got that line from the film 24 hour party people you cheating twat

That's why he used "quotes" knobhead!

    Great band.

  • A certain radio...ESG...mission of burma...gang of four...thanks for exist

  • "A Certain Ratio had all the talent of Joy Division...but better clothes."

  • That guy sounds much more like Ian Curtis than Paul Banks ever did.

  • love it..

  • Does anybody know the present whereabouts of Mikey Eastwood, who did the programming on ACR:MCR? He should still be in the Manchester area somewhere.

I would like to contact him.

  • Shack up's a good song, albeit a bit clumpy in the "ahhh" bits. But let's not get over excited. They got better with age.Like ACR:MCR from 90 (Bernard Sumner on board for a couple of tracks). "Good Together" has Barney ACR and Sean Ryder!

  • Agree they were wayway better than Joy Division. Saw them at King Tuts many years ago, they were superb.

  • "Better thank Joy Division"...? You must be joking! Ok, taste is subjective, for me ACR are just boring, weak and flat.

  • Wow, have never heard this. Great quality music indeed, this is fantastic!!!!!!!!!!

  • they was into dave valentine.

shack up is simple magnificence, did talking heads precede this or follow?

  • For white punk-funk then Talking Heads preceded A Certain Ratio. But there were other bands doing this also like the Gang of Four and the Pop Group from the UK and the Contortions from NYC. A lot of British bands were working with funk at this time like Maximum Joy. It's ironic that New Order probably eclipsed the lot of them in the dance music stakes with Blue Monday. Shack Up was also only released originally on Factory Benelux out of Belgium so you had to get it as an import.

  • love ACR shack up not heard or seen in 20 years sah weeet

  • marv

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • lol its so bad that i love it, i think this version is a little bit to fast and the sounds are too electronic. but very original anyway :)

  • Cool, but gimme the Banbarra version any day

  • one of the best songs ever made !!!

    the rhythm is brilliant !!

  • joy division got owned

  • joy division got owned

  • i like this, nice ska feel to it, gonna try hunt it down on vinyl

  • Does anybody knows the lyrics of this song?

  • why don't you just search them on google. lazy

  • Why do you think I haven't search on google before asking here? Why do you waste your time anwsering me stupidities like this? Why don't you just shut up. Shut up, baby!

  • i love that reply. you, sir have my upmost respect. simply because of your reply, i listened to the song and wrote down what the first verse of lyrics sounded like. i think they're pretty good. wipe out the problems or our society, shack up shack up we were made to live together, unless you can't see, shack up shack up we can love together, work together, sleep together shack up shack up so why can't we live together? shack up baby shack up
  • Thank you sir!

  • i only know the fatcamp edit of this, very very interesting,so these are the poor twats in 24 hr party people in the uniforms LOL

  • If anyone's interested there's a really in-depth article about the Banbarra original of this song in the current Wax Poetics magazine (#21), for you music geeks out there

  • this played at full volume with my eyes shut takes me back to the hacienda, devilles and the venue...oh i wish i was 18 again...

  • The production is pretty raw and gritty. This is interesting to me as "24 hour party people" became my favorite music movie. Go Manchester! :)

  • This is awesome! I had no clue there was a promo video for this.

I used to serenade my ex with this song when I was trying to get her to move to Hollywood and move in with me ... which eventually happened in late 1981, so the song worked :)

I still have FAC 5, have this FBN 7" single, have the "Graveyard & Ballroom" cassette, and finally saw ACR at Club Lingerie in Hollywood in 1982. Great, great band. After '83 we went in different directions tho ...

  • We were such assholes. We booed them wehn they came to New York to warm up for New Order. I wish I could apologize in person.

  • That says a lot for you.

  • i know someone who wud like to use your video for a new TV show . can u give me confirmatipn that ut is alright and i will forard ur details

  • havent heard in such a long time brings me back to my youth greattt
