@gekiryudojo What do you do if you use a "soete technique" when the left hand is supporting the monouchi? Which classical sword style do you train in?
@gekiryudojo The importance of cleaning the blade is explained in the DVD series. However, that still does not address your statement that you should never touch the blade. Would you care to elaborate on the techniques presented where the Japanese sword teacher touches the blade during two hand cutting, two hand blocking and particularly while performing the noto where he touches the blade on every waza? Did Hatsumi Sensei teach you these Tut-Tut, No-No's for 28 yrs. or was it someone else?
Katanas are really awesome.Im watching this to know how my opponent will use it since I use staves instead :3.Or duel wield to swords.Idk if you can call it a katana then...
right now, i am learning both kendo and judo at home, i'm only practice by myself. i think it little hard for me. but it is fun. this thing is not for fighting on street or at school. it is dangerous if you do it to your friend either your family. i'm newbie ^^
Graet Video series I have the book, next i will get the videos. I gues the reason is so little viewers is the video is not label "Iaido" "Katana" etc ,but the Sensei name.
My only issue with this video is that a bokuto was not used during the presentation of the basic cutting techniques. A Katana is both a weapon of war and a Samurai's Soul. It should not be drawn without the intention to kill or protect, and only if absolutely necessary. It's also dangerous, no matter how skilled you are, to use a sharp object in a 2 person demonstration.
Do not try this at home Kids. Work with a skilled instructor only.
@AngelusBlaze He is using a Iaito or practice sword, this is exactly why they are built for Iaijutsu practice, they are blunt weapons. By the way, Shinken (sharp swords or live blade) are also traditionally drawn to practice Suemongiri (also called tameshigiri), so I have to respectfully disagree with your comment.
Starting at 7 minutes, I could never do that demonstration. It wouldn't matter how experienced the guy could be, I would flip out if someone fake slashed at me with a sword
I started researching katanas for like 6 months now just for fun. :D They're so cool!! Thank you SO MUCH for this video! I learned most of the names for the parts, but i don't know if I'm pronouncing them properly, so this video helped a lot!!!
Hey everyone, i'm offering to trade my sword. i'm a nationally ranked black belt, and I've used this sword in competitions, and I just want someone to have something that they can really appreciate. Anyways it's $200 and up, full tang, and it's newly refurbished. I've had it since 1994, so i don't have a receipt of the price. So if anyone is interested, hit me up. And my sword is 1095 Carbon Steel. I will not accept a stainless steel sword.
how much did your sword cost i mean your katana?

@Taisetsutoo weird, in WMA we grip the sword in half-swording to choke up and perform wrestling tech close in.

@AngelusBlaze i would also say that a sword is not a sword only if it is made of steel and sharp, a bokken is by definition a wooden sword.

i cannot understand why there are only 700 viewings of this clip. These basics are very efficient for understanding kendo kata and iaido as well.

Less than 2 years later, it sits at 10,090.
Good vid, very confident teacher. I don't practice JSA (WMA student here), but its still good.
