One thing that I have noticed is that there are a high proportion of people in "recovery" that have been shifted from place to place as children.
This happened to me. I lived in 4 different cities and had gone to 6 different schools by the time I was 10.
My self narrative became quite chameleon-like. I learnt to adapt my "self" to new people and situations as required. However, this left me with almost no sense of self.
Drug intoxication allowed me to access a "self" that was amenable to ME.
