I loved this show, where 4 strong women, could fight for what they believe in and still be classy. But got taken off for show's like Bridezilla... Thank you so much lifetime!
Everyone should be treated with respect, however I don't have to support or condone gay marriage, and that does not make me such negative connotations.
@cadevereaux You don't have to support equality, it's true. But you can hardly evade being labelled a xenophobe for it as much as you'd like to. Whatever your reasons are for maintaining that marriage is only for one group of people and not for another, well, they're just not good enough. Because there are no reasons that are good enough. People who impose their religious or personal beliefs upon others ARE, in fact, xenophobes and bigots. Period.
@cadevereaux Gays are among the most chivalrous people in the world. I am gay, and people are always complimenting me on that...when was the last time you saw a straight man open a car door for anyone? As for morals, how moral is it for you to impose your idea of morality onto other people who don't share your views? I am not shocked by your small-mindedness, sadly, since it is rampant. I believe that people who hold such views simply refuse to think them through because they just "don't wanna."
@robbjmc ... I must be ignorant. Thats a blanket statement. I apologize for saying that gays are not Chivalrous, i'm sure most of them are. Again sorry.
@cadevereaux - It's not your idea of chivalry that is in question, sir... most men are indeed lacking in that category. It is your idea of morality that leaves room for concern. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume that you believe good morals come from the Christian Holy Bible as you interpret it. It is impossible, in practice, to obey the Bible as if it were a list of commandments without contradiction. Bible Scholars will tell you there's no clear Biblical justification there.
Interesting to hear about the genesis of the "Night the lights went out in Georgia" episode. They all looked great ... I've been a member at Paley/MTR but don't remember this program scheduled but glad to see part of it.
I loved the Designing Women, up until Delta Burke and Jean Smart left the show. And I love the Golden Girls, They are the two best show I could watch over and over.
Dixie Carter was a fine actress. Julia Sugarbaker is a character from the mind of Linda Bloodworth Thomason. Reality vs. fiction. Carter did not necessarily agree with her character. She was playing a character on tv. In fact, their politics were very different. I don't see any connection whatsoever between Designing Women and homosexual men. The show is about four Southern women. Being a Southern woman myself, I love it.
Although Dixie Carter was a Republican and you are correct in that she had differing views than her character, she was in fact a strong supporter of the gay community and human rights.
"The night the lights went out in Georgia" really is often recited in gay/drag bars. These fabulous gals were the original gay icons! Dixie will be missed greatly!
I grew up on this show. My mom was a "belle" and she watched this show every week. Brings back a lot of memories. It's interesting how Dixie sounds less southern than her character Julia. The accent doesn't seem as strong.
I believe Dixie moved to New York in her early 20s and living in New York probably neutralized her Tennessee accent. Her first big role was a non-southern character, Assistant DA Brandy Henderson on "The Edge of Night", so she can probably turn the accent on and off as she needs to.
I agree, but at least the show is coming out on DVD steadily. We have the first two seasons out already and Season 3 is scheduled for March 2nd. Can't wait... :)
Delta Burke was so cool as Suzanne, they were all cool, but I just LOVE Delta as Suzanne, LOVE IT!

This is disappointing. I though this was a show that taught chivalry, and morals.
