i like how he said that it was way heavier than any of the swords used by people as if theres a race of sword wielding giants terrorizing the countryside
Haha, and here I've been thinking you were super tall! Now I'm happy. I've been worried that all these swords would dwarf me, but if you're an inch shorter than me, then I'm no longer worried. What a relief. :)
1:Position the sword so that the end of the scabbard is sticking out from your left(can be done with your right hand by pulling the handle down toward your shoulder)
2:with your left hand and pull down the scabbard as far as you can
3:draw the sword out with your right hand
its easier this way because you draw half the sword by way No.2 and finish it with No.3 this is best suited for katana's but should work for straight swords as well :D
Just for everyone's reference, Mike is right about this thing being heavy. He makes this sword look smaller than it really is. I'm only an inch shorter than he is and when the sword is stood vertically it comes up to the middle of my neck. It is absolutely a two-handed weapon; wielding it in one hand is impossible.
You sir, never cease to amaze me with your weaponsmithing skills and your swordmanship. :) Have you ever thought of trying to make a battle ax? I love those things...
@EarlRapseg I ordered it in... I think February of this year and he finished it last month (June), so about 4 months. It's one hell of a piee of work.
@michaelcthulhu Oh I know I was just asking because I'm stalled on a project of my own and momentarily though I could push it off on you. Never mind, I need to do it myself.
Oh, and uh... your aim has improved! Nice swings there, hehe. (Now the sword is gonna smell like beer, haha, everyone's gonna think I'm drunk when I stab them)
@Jimaera so you plan a stabbing spree.... well I spose it had to happen someday... I don't exactly vet my customers... Anyway, it smells like WD40 now. I love that stuff, it's magical
PS, you may want to invest in some dubyadee and a scotch bright pad (one for metal like) if you want to perform similar antics to the ones above (and still have a clean sword).
@michaelcthulhu Yeah, I have some choji oil that I use for my other swords, I think I'm gonna see how it does for this. It sure as hell ain't a katana but it's still carbon steel, so I think that should do pretty well. Taking my whetstones to this may be going a bit to far, haha, but I'll definitely keep it clean.
The choji oil is nice, it keeps blades really clean and it's scented with cloves, haha, so people will get to smell a nice fragrance as they die...? >_>;
@Jimaera I think the blade will be easier to sharpen out of the harness, and I'd recommend needle files for sharpening. Hmmm.... I think WD and needle files will work better if the blade has been used/abused a lot, but the traditional stuff will probably work better for light cleaning (like if you leave the thing in a shed for six months and it turns bright red, I'd recommend using the WD and Scotch Brite and needle files.)
@michaelcthulhu Yeah, the choji oil is just to protect the blade from rust, it's not for actual cleaning. Files are a lot faster and easier to use than whetstones anyway; and whetstones are generally better for Eastern-style swords where you need to be careful not to kill your edge geometry, they sharpen by buffing rather than actually removing layers of metal.
Dude... thank you again for going through the hell that was making that scabbard :/ Somehow I doubt I'm taller than you, but don't worry, I'm used to dealing with stairs while armed. XD Looks awesome, can't wait for it to get here!
