@thievinbrudda Ali, as well as Jordan and Ruth, were featured because ESPN named them the Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century. Pretty good choices, agreed?
Does anyone else think that there was way more time dedicated to basketball and hockey compared to baseball and especially football? Not to mention the usual ESPN New England/Northeastern regional bias?
College football got shafted. No Bud Wilkinson's Oklahoma, Mr. Inside and Mr. Outside, Bowden, Osborn going for 2? And most glaringly no Alonzo Stagg, the man that basically invented modern football?
Baseball also got shafted. No John McGraw, Connie Mack, Black Sox, Cy Young, Hornsby, Wagner..?
why do both ali and frazier get seen on this video, when joe louis, a man who reigned for 12 years and united his country during the great depression and WW2 , not get a mention ?

I sent ESPN an email to find out which song this was years later! I never heard anything back from them. For years I never thought I would come up with this until I heard this song in the radio and thought that it sounded familiar, and typed in the song's name and ESPN, and I finally got the answer I was looking for!
Brought a tear to my eye. I remember when I first saw this and being blown away I doubted ever seeing it again. It brought a tear to my eye when I first saw this years ago too.
@xSimonne. There are several classic female athletes and 'great moments.' Babe Zaharias, Mary Lou Retton, Monica Seles, U of T's Holtzclaw, Romania's Nadia K, two scenes from Wimbledon, and of course Brandi Chastain to name a few. Fantastic Video.
i recorded this when it was live back in 1999 i was in my freshman year of college just completed my first semester as i graduated high school earlier that year...memories man. i was looking for this a long time thanks for the upload
@crunchnut21, It's not supposed to be inspirational, although the song was. This was aired on December 31, 1999 if I recall correctly, and it's just showing some of the big moments, good and bad, of the 20th century in sports. It also showed Kerrigan crying, the 1989 earthquake, the Munich tragedy, etc. For that matter, I don't think the Super Bowl Shuffle is all that inspirational.
@crunchnut21 Yeah. That's more of a search engine question. It's a great song but if you listen to some of the lyrics, it's got a lot of non inspirational stuff, too. If I had to guess, I would say because it's called Dream on and the word dream is kinda tied to inspiration.
the greatest sports clips of all time along with the greatest rock song of all time---cannot control myself----if you not sheadin a few tears on this one, you probably not as big a sports fan as you think you are
I think it would be awesome if someone made of a list of all the clips used. I know most of them but some of the images and clips I do not know the exact significance or story. Someone help me out :)
Bravo to whoever put this together at ESPN. Good memories of a lot of the clips in this...brings a smile of admiration to my face for all of the athletes. Kept getting goosebumps watching this. @tigerrd23 Thank you for finding this. I hope it doesn't fall victim to the copyright patrol. Think I'll subscribe to your page, because if it does disappear, I'll be begging you for a copy. lol
Unbelievable video. I remember sittin with the kids on new years day in 2000 watchin this on sportscenter over and over all morning. I've got it on an old vhs vid, but this is awsome. I love all of the classic calls. "I dont believe what I just saw...." "Theres a steal by Bird....." Gives me goose bumps! lol

I remember seeing this the first time as a young kid and remembered it to this day didn't think they had it anywhere though, ahh thank god for youtube
@Garrnett1 Exact same. It took me forever to find this video, i even called ESPN hoping to buy a copy and they said it was impossible. Lucky my dad likes to keep things around in the garage forever.
@LobowolfXXX U.S. Born sprinter Michael Johnson, 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He won the 200 and 400. He contracted food poisoning just prior to the 82 Olympics in Spain so winning two golds 4 years hence especially emotional (and on home turf). Wore a pair of gold-painted Nike Shoes, ergo "The man in the golden shoes."

@crueldawg64 The best place for heartbreaks too, I'm from Detroit and I feel soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad for your city and fans of the sports teams there, I would've hung myself already if I was a Cleveland sports fan
@shawdowwolf17 Austrian downhill skier Hermann Maier at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. He was okay...went on to win gold later in a different event.
This is a good video, but it is all football, basketball, and hockey. Where are all of the amazing moments from soccer, swimming, track and field, and gymnastics?
@hossahunter22 Thank you for posting this. I was trying to remember all day what movie I said I was going to watch yesterday and you just reminded me. Yesssssssss
@tigerrd23 It didn't quite end her career. Kerrigan still won silver at the ensuing Olympic games. Then she did a pretty good job of killing her career (or her popularity at least) by saying stupid things.
@Sangman035 The first bit is the '89 San Fran earthquake. It happened right before Game 3 of the '89 World Series between the Giants and the A's. The video clips are from the pregame telecast, when the quake struck. The second bit is Nancy Kerrigan at the '94 US ice-skating world championships after she was attacked by the ex-husband of her rival, Tonya Harding. She suffered a knee injury in the attack that kept her out of the competition.
great video, makes you love life and motivates you to push yourself to your full poteintal and become the best person you can be not only in your sport but every breath you take. i thank god for giving me the ability to play football because i know theres someone that would give up there whole life just to have the ability and opportunity i have today for one day. i thank the lord for everything.....
Good video for american sports, but hardly representative of world sports greatest moments. Major areas like track and field, gymnastics, swimming, football (soccor) and cycling dismissed in a handful of shots or ignored.
This is incredible. For someone who saw the US Hockey team beat the Russians and win the gold, it is the essence of the message, to dream and believe in miracles and my favorite part.
The video is not bad. I would have the most difficult time putting together something like this. ESPN did a good job.

@Garrnett1 Exact same. It took me forever to find this video, i even called ESPN hoping to buy a copy and they said it was impossible. Lucky my dad likes to keep things around in the garage forever.

@Garrnett1 Same here...I tried to tape it in 1999, but the tape screwed up...I was devastated. Great video

This is one of THE best sports videos of all time. ESPN, whoever put this together should be editing all of your videos.

Nancy Kerigan
Figure Skater whos main competion, tonya harding, boyfriend took a crow-bar to her knees and ended her career.
tigerrd23 1 year ago
@tigerrd23 It didn't quite end her career. Kerrigan still won silver at the ensuing Olympic games. Then she did a pretty good job of killing her career (or her popularity at least) by saying stupid things.

Whats the problem at 1:11 to 1:19 ?
Sangman035 1 year ago
@Sangman035 The first bit is the '89 San Fran earthquake. It happened right before Game 3 of the '89 World Series between the Giants and the A's. The video clips are from the pregame telecast, when the quake struck. The second bit is Nancy Kerrigan at the '94 US ice-skating world championships after she was attacked by the ex-husband of her rival, Tonya Harding. She suffered a knee injury in the attack that kept her out of the competition.

@Sangman035 ... the earthquake in san fransico, i think during the world series.

Good video for american sports, but hardly representative of world sports greatest moments. Major areas like track and field, gymnastics, swimming, football (soccor) and cycling dismissed in a handful of shots or ignored.
ClydeRowing 1 year ago 2
they should dedicate a video to the greatest football moments of the century. i can think of many clips, like zidane in 1998, pele, eric cantona etc.

how the hell does this not have at least 1 mil views
bigmathafaka 2 years ago 26
Agreed.
There must be other versions on Youtube, because this is way way too good to only have the tiny amount of views (42,951) it does.
I have forwarded the link to probably 20 people myself over the last few months.
Believe me, I'm doing my part to get it over a million.
P.S.- It's all I can do to keep sitting here at my desk some days after watching it. I feel like going out and playing some seriously hardcore hockey.
