@SMJeOma The C5-A was here first. I was on one in 1971. The An-225 didn't appear until 1988. Go to your room and wish for a dick. And a brain while you're at it. Wait, better cancel the dick because it will take more blood away from your brain.

@SMJeOma Interesting parting shot: "Respect Others". It doesn't even sound like you respect yourself. And you've suffered from hypocrisy for...how long, now? Tut-tut...and Cheers.
Gear was still down but notice the door open? That door is left open on takeoff because the co-pilot has to manually reach out and pull that gear up by hand. ;)
I'm in love... watched one of these do a flypast at RAF Duxford UK years ago a few feet above the ground... on it's way to the States i think from Germany in Beige Desert Camo... it looked like it was barely moving... don't know how it stayed airborn... has this one got landing gear failure?!
When I worked on the C-5 used to think it was a waste of tax payers money. Now that I am working on the B-52, I take that back. B-52 is a complete waste of money that does nothing but fly training missions everyday. Waste of gas, waste of time, waste of money.
they are built purely for conventional carpet and nuclear bombing, something virtually every major nation has since abandoned. yet America still has 85 of them running, and they cost so much to run! Utter white Elephants, kept for their fear factor only most likely.
@datboiduane I suppose it's like the Russians always parading their Military Hardware in a way... at the end of the day it's just a deterant... a show of strength... don't mess with us kind of thing... but as you say at cost to the tax payer!
@ecw11563 A models ll went to the reserves, the B models went through a retrofit in between 2004 and 2008 i believe to upgrade the flight deck instruments, and i believe they also have new engines now.
@vzclubbie Hey I hate to ask a dumb question.....but why are they replacing the engines of the C-5 fleet? Guess our government never heard of the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
@SteveWard3928 it's a good question, as far as I know its to do with an avionics modernization program, as part of that plan c-5's re-engined with cf6's will become the c-5m super galaxy. it's just one of a few things to be tweaked over time :)
@SteveWard3928 they upgraded the engines so the C-5 can carry more cargo, faster, and farther than previous models. It's also been modernized to improve reliability, efficiency, and maintainability. Supposedly reducing operating costs.
On the "B" Model C-5's this is done by energising the gear up solenoid on the control manifold at the same time as door unlock solenoid is energised. Much nicer and reliable then the "A" model. I worked on these things for years and loved it! this is why when you are flying it makes so much noise when the gear is lowered. Up and unlock are done first. This pulls the weight of the gear off the locks making them easier to open.
On the "B" Model C-5's this is done by energising the gear up solenoid on the control manifold at the same time as door unlock solenoid is energised. Much nicer and reliable then the "A" model. I worked on these things for years and loved it!
Ok what the deal is with the right gear...... On "A" model c-5's there is a hydraulic "fuse" in line to port the first couple of seconds of hydraulic power to "Gear Up". This is done to take the weight of the gear off the door locks so they can unlock easier.
If this fuse goes bad, when the gear is trying to retract, the fluid just goes in a circle and there is not enough pressure to retract the gear. That fuse is a pain in the butt to change. But at least this is an easy fix.
Try driving past an Air Force base when a C-5 is landing...right over your head. Then try staying on the road. Good luck. Did it myself driving past Hill AFB in Roy, Utah...the sound was unbelievable. Staying on the road...impossible
wow, usually you don't get a real good idea of just how big a plane is on video as apposed to in person, but you get a good feel for its size in this one. well done.
@Inklebonker1 FRED is what some call the C-5. fucking ridiculous economic disaster on account of them breaking so much. Massive aircraft though...and massively complicated.

Those big birds flew over Camp Humphreys, Korea all the time when I was stationed there. No mistaking the telltale grinding noise of a C-5's turbofans for any other aircraft!
Looks to be a Dover Tailstripe. The #2 gear or RT FWD GEAR for you technical types is a coomon problem called a gear strike. Its either a misrigged (bad or improper adjustment) or a worn out gear that requires replacement. I was heavy maintenance for five years and swing qualified. That plane most liking if not heading to dover de, diverted their for maintenance where it was jacked and rigged (adjusted). There is actually a video on here of a gear being retracted by maintence.
I spent 10 years as a crew chief on these babies at Dover AFB.........4 years as a flying crew chief. I could tell ya'll a story or two, for sure! There were some hard days but overall, I enjoyed every minute of it!
During my basic at Lackland I heard these babies flyin' overhead one after another. One plane alone shakes the whole building, a whole row of these and you start thinking there's an Earthquake goin' down.
I've seen plane similar to this descend for landing while out driving when I lived in South Carolina, it was so close I could see the underside clearly. Also, when I lived in SC I lived near an airport/Air Force base so planes and helicopters flying over was a daily thing. I just love that sound! :)
i've flown in C-5s a couple of times. there is a full passenger section under the tail fin. off course it wouldn't even rate for coach, you have to ware ear plug while flying it's so loud lol
I heard this day and night for close to 7 years while living on Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX...the flight path was right over my house and the noise was amazing, you had to pause conversations it was so loud. This clip really stirs up memories of living there. Thanks for jogging a portion of my childhood with this video lol.
