Ah, the hook point broke off the hook so nothing to catch the wire. Jet was slow off the front and the crew ejected. If they had not, the jet would have continued into the water. Once the seat weight was removed from the plane, it climbed.
Easy on the comments about the pilot being stupid or being anxious to eject. That wasn't the case in this scenario.
When the air boss is screaming in his mic to eject! eject! eject! and your going down, What you going to do, ride it out? Not me buddy, I the hell out of there!!!
The weight of the canopy (unknown), two Martin Baker ejection seats (about 300 pounds apiece, complete, IIRC), pilot and BN w/associated gear (say 220+ pounds apiece) comes to around 1200 pounds or more, which could well have been enough to make the difference. This is an A6 series, not an EA6 as implied by entropy40, and A6's also certainly don't have anywhere near a 1:1 power to weight ratio as suggested by figdmoney.
They must have been ragged on for the rest of the cruise with the plane being able to stay out of the water without any pilot in it. Maybe this intruder was actually a crew extruder.
their defense probably was that the plane was able to climb BECAUSE they bailed out.
the answer to that is to just give full power and pull back on the stick. those jets are able to climb vertically. now each of you give me 10 million dollars, or go after that run-away plane.
@figdmoney Some jets can get vertical, but an A-6 Prowler at recovery speed would stall. Also, pilots are told to get the engines in full military just before they slam the thing in the deck, just for that situation. The crew just lost the nerves, and their ride.
@Skoervmak That's where your wrong. I may be a potty mouth, at least I've served my country and I've been witness to the dangers of life on board an aircraft carrier. And I know how to type properly.
it really affects his spine permanently , many times they are incapable of flying ever again , besure the pilot was sure of his death if he didnt make that ejection .
It's better to lose a plane than a life... a piece of metal can be replaced, but not a life. It's one of those situations where a decision has to be made in a split second...tough call! The following goes to the idiot "32323232".... "Voz sos el pinche idiota mal parido, semejante pendejo, maricon! No des tu opinion si no sabes de lo que hablas! Sorry guys, just had to set that idiot straight. I'd like to see him make that comment in a sailors face. With that said...GO NAVY!!
The process of ejection took at least 1000 pounds off the plane, counting the canopy, the ejection seats, the pilots, and their gear. A sudden difference of 1000 pounds will dramatically affect the flight characteristics of a plane that's so slow to begin with. It is very likely that if they'd stayed, they'd have sunk with the plane. Good call. Interesting results, but this was a "can't save the plane" scenario.
The airplane hooked an arresting wire and started to slow down, but the arresting wire broke and the LSO didn't think they were going to have enough airspeed to be able to fly away, so he told them to eject. Turned out the plane was still able to fly, but it's still a better decision to eject in that situation. The airplane almost always goes into the water.
not knowing the details, if they were at max thrust, seems to me the decision to eject was sound, and they would've hit the water otherwise. the flight path after losing all that weight can't properly be assumed to be the path had they not lost the weight.
I seriously doubt that the weight change from 2 crew and seats on an A6 would have had much effect on the CG or their ability to fly. I think they probably would have been ok had they stayed with the plane, but when you are told to eject, you do it. I doubt that the judgement of anyone involved in this incident was questioned. It was an extremly close call that may just as likely have ended up with the plane in the water and both crew dead.
