this is just an extension of what hendrix was doing in the 60's (one of trey's influences-look it up), what KK Downing took from jimi into the 70's, and what Kerry King took from KK+Glenn (his admitted influences) into the early/mid 80's, and then trey went with it. So this playing atonal noise stuff is nothing new or unique, it just gets updated a bit each time by the next guy to do it, as they build on the past, but it came from jimi first.

Listen to KK do nearly the same thing on judas priests Rocka Rolla album from 1974, on the song Winter there's a middle part of that song called "Deep Freeze" which is KK doing jimi influenced noise just like what trey does here. Even before KK, Blue Cheer's Leigh Stephens did it in 1967+68(along with many others I'm sure in the 60's+70's) then trey and others from 80's+ on, so its not new
