As I went a walking one morning in May I met a young couple so far did we stray And one was a young maid so sweet and so fair And the other was a soldier and a brave Grenadier And they kissed so sweet and comforting As they clung to each other They went arm in arm along the road Like sister and brother They went arm in arm along the road Til they came to a stream And they both sat down together, love To hear the nightingale sing
Heard Luke with the Dubliners many times in the Embankment, Tallaght, Dublin - absolutely mighty - once heard never forgotten - makes me cry for times past
@praskovia13 I think that's what I love about the lyrics the most. In most instances that would illicit anger or laughter or something about the reaction, but in this song by the end its just so sweet and charming, I can't put my finger on it. But its so peaceful, the lovers are just in their own little world.
@clevername71 hello there nice to meet u, absolutely agreed, u put into words so well the feeling of this song, ty i wish u health peace happiness and good luck in all u do, have a lovelly weekend
@clevername71 on reflection, she could have already been due to wed some bonio type, well, might be she weds old bonioface quick, n has her soldierchild to remember him,and nobody any the wiser, for one that fills you with hope try Lukeys Unquiet grave
I saw the Dubliners in concert last night. It's the 25th anniversary of Lukes death this year and the whole concert was dedicated to him. It was very moving.
Agreed Schiple. coundt have put it better, Im 20 and only got into the Dubs about a year a go and now Luke is my bigggest vocal influence. No body sings like him, with such beuty, roughness, and perfection. Cant beat it. Love em
We have to stop saying best Irish singer ever, it's best SINGER ever...really can you name me one singer who does better? There are so many good singers out there, past and present, but no one as great as Luke, does not matter what the genre.
Name a singer who does better? I don't have a lot of names in my head but one comes: Ewan MacColl-Ewan the greit, the unique, the wonderful, the precious; the rare, the universal. Obliviously, they were friends.
@Chomuno Ewan McColl mentored Luke and Luke learned a lot from him, and they had a relationship, but to say that McColl was a better singer than Luke is quite frankly OUTRAGEOUS..McColl was very technical, and Luke learned that technique but then outgrew McColl by leaps and bounds..... .
It's you I can find outrageous! But I don't, everyone his choice! "McColl was very technical..." yes, but he had talent, real talent, not speaking of his wonderful talent of writing, nor his rare intelligence but just his singer-talent, he has a wonderful voice, a great notion of musics, a gust for folksong very few people have (Luke had)... Take a look on the songs of Ewan on my profile!
@Chomuno Okay, so outrageous was a bit over the top,,,get very defensive when it comes to Luke, apologies, but there is, in my opinion. I have seen vids of Ewan singing, no comparison whatsoever. Sometimes when Luke hits certain notes, I actually get a little dizzy, and no one else's voice has ever affected me like that - certainly not Ewan's and lest you think I am just having mini-strokes, the same thing happens to other Luke fans, I've checked. So appreciate your opinion, but no cigar
@decoswe lol, i thought it was bonio, this song is sex education centuries ago methinks, don't forget ppl, when u sit down to hear the nightingale sing, cover up first, i can't get over when he tells her he has a wife she sits down for some more nightingale, absoluetly fantastic, GB Luke and Ciaran and Ronnie RIP Lads we' re still having a great time with ye GB and RIP XXX
Hi I sing and play accordion met luke many years ago in Dublin he sung all the songs I love there never ever be another Luke thanks a million for your music postings regards peter wife is from county wexford
@neohip because the called themselves the dubliners, ireland and very proud of it they were. Your right they were/are unlimited when it comes to folk and trad. irish.
man ( if so.... ?) im in brisbane australia ! and i heard this for the first time today after listening to `the night visiting song` its now 6 36 in brisbane and luke kelly is still very much akive !!!!
we should all campaign for a national station dedicated to Irish songs and music. Its a disgrace that our beautiful songs arent heard on the airwaves. The mainstream media are a joke or some would say have an agenda; anyway great tune.
Every song Luke sang he made a classic. He was the greatest (folk) singer I ever heard. It is a pleasure to be able to hear his old songs again. Beautiful.
Yeah ! My Mother used to sing this to us in the sixties and Luke was the first recording i heard of this ! Many artists have cover this track but nobody can touch Luke ! This is the best version by far !!!!
I dont think that this is Luke's best song. he may have been in ill health at this stage,

@skane01 Not at all, this is a very early recording of Luke in the early sixties. Very different to later stuff but I think it's fantastic

Don't forget that Luke and the Dubliners didn't limit themselves to Irish songs.

this is really the best version of the nightingale.
lukes voice is just the greatest ever.
but i did never see him live

The Nightingale currently is my favourite song.

Amazing. It could very well be one of the greatest songs I have ever heard, and with Luke Kelly singing it, its that much better.
When and where was this performed? And what album is on? And why is it not as famous a song as it should be?
clevername71 4 years ago 11
Hi,it was recorded in 1964 not sure exactly were,
i agree it should be as famous as his other songs because its a beautiful song, its off Dubliners their greatest hits.

It was originally on The Dubliners with Luke Kelly (their first album!).
