The cars are actually dragged by cables. The same technology found on aircraft carriers is used to drag the vehicles at a high speed. A computer controls the timing of the explosions, this way during the movie the cables pulling the cars are in sync with the explosions. Giving the illusion of a more powerful explosion. Then after the shot, more flame and flaying debris are added by CG effects. Movie magic!

The explosions didn't cause the car to fly through the air the car is being pulled along the tracks you see in front of it that go past the yellow cab. Look at the two lines going from the red car, under the burned out cars to the yellow cab. They wouldn't toss a car around downtown Chi with explosions with no control of where it went. Use your head dude.
