Wasn't it great that the cameraman chose to focus so close on Tony's hand. There's so many today that would get unuseful long range or really short range ones of their face whatever.
@ColtraneTaylor Very true! Sometimes one can wonder if cameramen ever saw how a guitar is played. And this solo is my favourite from Tony, so here it's an audiovisual caviar for me..
as previously posted was at this concert. Its still my favourite live version even after having been at several live peformances up to 2005. hope 2012 will take me up to 40 BS live concerts. Tony plays with 2 fingers most of the time and these solos are not rated by today's guitarists but of their time I think they are great and I still like today - okay they go up and down the pentatonic scales but I still think they are great to listen to and better than many of todays guitar gods offerings.
Malmsteen,Satriani and Vai are fast, but they couldn't put a decent melody together to save their lives. It's all about the flash with them. Does anyone walk around humming a malmsteen solo?
@Chrisdrumz@Chrisdrumz Agree with you totally. I was in the audience for this concert at age of 23 now 56! The first solo is so melodic that I can sing it almost like a song. I play guitar and some guitarists are so dismissive of Iommi and other 60's 70's and 80's guitarists. I admire the technical ability of malmsteen and others but there's more to the guitar than moving up and down the guitar neck with speed. Tony Iommi has an unique style and is also a brilliant composer.
Ok, I know a lot of you might disagree with me, but I personally find the version on the Reunion Live album, as well as the 2005 Ozzfest Donnington version much better. this one seems more sloppy.
Wow, Geezer is really tearing it up and getting funky, especially starting at 2:00. I love this show and period of Sabbath's history, and sometimes feel this is them at their prime! (even tho I have read they didn't like this time)
@treetoptop geezer is one of the most creative bass players ever - he is so funky he could play in funkadelic - his bass lines e.g faries wear boots are pure r&b and could sit perfectly in motown number but he does it in the context of sabbath. hes one of the few prolific bass string benders in rock and treats the bass as a lead instrument instead of just keeping the beat and root note- rather like mcartney did in the beatles.
@432ps1 That guitar was made by John Birch, who was imprisoned for a long time for poising his wife to death. I think the "Old Boy" one was completely made by JayDee, except for the pickups. Last I read Tony doesn't have any John Birch guitars. I also think he donated it to either the Miami or N.Y. Hard Rock Cafe.
My goodness only 26,000 views here ; should be a 100,000,000 for each video of Black Sabbath's
If a prospective pro guitarist wants to see how to play lead escpecially with light strings on a GIBSON SG with a rosewood neck finger board this is the MAN to observe and learn and he is disabled missing finger tips ta boot. An inspiration to all of us that have said "they can't.
I love it when Tony looks at Bill to hit pronounced noted together, and then at 3:20 Bill changes pace - and there is Ozzy dropping right into the groove the band is playing. It's plain to see - Ozzy is FEELING that shit. And that's what I love about Ozzy - he really loves what he does, he really loves heavy, kick-ass Rock & Roll......These guys, even with all the egos and attitudes flying around at the time - LOVED playing on stage with each other. You can SEE the fun in their eyes man!
Tony is a Guitar God !! One of my biggest influences as a youthful guitar player,, just amazing riffs and screaming leads, to hear his power chords even to this day just really does it for me !! I bought one of his signature guitars and the thing friggin screams !!!!
Cuba
@goalnick Well, Ozzy has a style so you could say that about alot of the stuff he did.. This song was recorded more than five years before he did "I Don't Know" ...
@goalnick I hear you man..i just commented on this subject on a another clip of this song..i'm glad to see i'm not alone hearing this resemblance :) That said, i guess there's nothing wrong in borrowing from yourself ;)) Ozzy and Sabbath rules!!
@danophile07 what couldve they done toghether if they were on their last legs..i know they just snorted more coke than one of those dirt devil vacum cleaner.smoking 66 inches joint.drinking 80 gallons of booze.ozzy s end was happening it took him a while to see what really was going on.1979 was not a year that they really did something constructive
@bengativo6 the fallout was because of a bunch of things 1 was that ozzy wanted them to keep making heavy music, stay heavy metal because towards the end of the 70s they were making more typical rock and iommi knew ozzy was right coz as soo as they were a full band again in 80 they made a full heavy metal album with dio
Oh master we are not worthy!!!! your song "the straightner" at the end of wheels of confusion is the reason why I picked up a guitar and spent countless hours as a teenager trying to get the sound just perfect...........34 years later and still trying hahahahhahahahaha!!! long live "the master of reality"

god i love the long Iommi solo's they're great! too many guitarests today try to sound like Yngwie and he's good and all but i tlike the old solo's like Page Iommi and blackmoore!
iommi, Page and Blackmore are much better guitarists than the likes of malmsteen satriania and vai because they are all round musicians -- servants to the song and to the band - and they all have their own unique sound and style.
