"And it made me think it's not just the stones that they're guarding"
Britain was under attack by real freedom and real democracy, in which anyone could stand up and speak their mind and be heard. They were threatened by even the example of people living outside the system.
There is more about the Beanfield in the Suggestions to the right of the page, but I think there is as much or more understanding to be gained by the pages covering the Stonehenge Free Music Festival itself.
Thatcher was an ongoing disaster. First time I ever saw the British police, Nottingham with submachine guns trying to catch Flying Pickets... oh yes, ECONOMIC necessity says it all Caydius.
Do you guys actually know anything about politics, or do you just assume that everything that ends up in violence must be dominantly wrong.
"If not for her this country would still be great"? Do you have any idea of the recession that Thatcher bought us out from? The unions that were destroying the work forces? She put an end to pretty much everything that was wrong with Britain at the time.
Moral of this story, go into an exclusion zone, get told to go home, refuse. What do you expect?
Moral of this story...if you support an arsehole who rules the majority of the electorate with a jack boot on their necks, they still live with the repression 25 years on, the minority at the top milking the majority at the bottom who live under the yoke of repression..with no right of free speech or expression, long live pre Thatchers England
@noz911life ..no problems brother, I hated Thatcher and te way she smashed our institutions for financial gain, just don't think that the police were there because they wanted to be....I saw what it was doing to our communities....only those officers who came from outside didn't give a shit and were there for the money....Thatcher devastated our country as much as bliar and clown
errr...The Police to potect and serve not smash peoples homes and beat pregnant women.
The facts are the traveller did break the law, but the actions of the police were barbaric, but that was Thatcher's Britian, there was a lot of police brutality.
.Dont comment on things you know nothing about .Yes i do know all about it and had to leave england because of her and her jack booted army . you talk out of your 1 winking brown eye !. FOOL !
Thatcher was a mad slavering Bitch, (still is for that matter) She ground anyone who dissented under the heel of her Jackboot, you say she brought Britain out of recession, well, I was there, and I didn't notice anything getting better. None of that affluence filtered down as far as me. You weren't even fuckin' born, so what do you know? And it was just a fuckin beanfield. Fuck exclusion zones. Moral of this story, wind your neck in, and don't flaunt your ignorance. It makes you look stupid.
About the whole "not even born" thing. It's not really about who was there, in fact those are normally the most distorted views. Look at it from the outside and you see the country took a definate step up. Not every person in the country suddenly had a perfect life... sorry?
And it was an exclusion zone, one that they broke down farmer's fences to get into... which if you wanna argue was not against the law then you go ahead.
I'm not trying to say it was against the Law, you fool, (and by the way, the Police broke those fences down, and I saw them do it) It's about oppression, Police brutality, how the rule of Law is abused by those we allow to implement it, it's about people having the bollocks to stand up to them, and not just comply, it's about the State's over reaction to anything that doesn't comply, it's about media distorting the facts, before presenting the public with any information.
@KarmicAnarchist You saw them do it? Oh DID YOU? well we should probably take that as hard evidence. Oh wait... doesn't that mean you were there...? Hmm... this could give a slight bias to your argument....
You can stand up to democracy if you want, won't get you anywhere though... and to be honest, all the media footage I've seen of it actually is anti-police brutality and bitches about it. So I would agree, they do distort facts, anything to sell a paper.
Yes I was there, and of course It gives a bias to what I'm saying, I'm not trying to convince anyone of what happened, it's all well documented, and public domain anyway, but don't you try and tell me you have a better or more valid view than I do, any violence that day was instigated by the Police for political reasons. In 1984, (the year before) the whole festival at Stonehenge passed without incident, or arrest. You quite obviously know fuck all about it, except what you've seen on video.
And the recession you're talking about was a direct result of Thatchers economic policy anyway, so that blows you out of the water. In fact, I'd go as far as to say she was so hated, that when the IRA bombed the Tory Conference at Brighton, a significant number of normal, law abiding people were sorry that she wasn't blown apart. I know I was. THAT'S how deeply she was hated. And with good reason too.
Mind you it was the blue rinse brigade fired up by the Maily Dail and Son readers and such like bourgoise who cheered her and her lackeys on and on. You'd have thought a few hundred people in ratty old vehicles were going to overthrow their world and ignite armageddon to hear the rants and vitriol pouring from their self-serving media.
Tell me about it ! you darling young lady , i had same upbinging that is to say i was raised by adults i had my two brothers and two sisters they were a lot older than me,very hippi style life and i would never regret it . im probably the levellers youngest fan. lol. i am actually not so young but not many young people my age or less that i know have never even heard of the levellers.
remember the beanfields like it was yesterday,we got nicked spent three days in basingstoke nick on a trumped up charge of inciting a riot with a max sentence of life in prison went to court in salisbury 4 months later and got bound over to keep the peace for 6 months if we broke the it we got a £50 fine lol, aaaaaa those were the days, ps ACAB.
It was heartbreaking seeing all the vehicles, peoples homes, being towed onto that Lord's land, smashed up and broken. But the sense of solidarity and pulling together was immense.
wow maximum respect geezer . i was young when it happened but my mum taught me this song and i saw it on telly on worst riots. **there laughing at u n me**
fuck you cunt burgersoft777 the convoy ment someting to some people i bet you are one ov them little boys who lived with mammy and daddy all his life went to a posh school you wanker stand up to the scum their all wankers like YOU
I remember it all as if yesterday before the fucking goverment made it illegal to have a gathering. Ah all the free festivals the sense of family more fucking community spirit then. I see that some idiots cant tell the difference betweeb New Age Travellers and Gypsies, the later caused more damage than we ever. We mainly stayed out of sight living in woodlands or by rivers. Kids now adays can only dream of the sense of freedom we had.
I'm not so stupid as to think that the convoy had it coming. Talk about setting yourselves up as a target and moaning when the enemy strikes. The anarchist had only themselves to blame. Crackdowns demonstrate that we are in weak position, open confrontation was never ever going to work.
It was one group of power mongers fighting another, which was just.

Ahhhh, the blame game.
I held my tongue all through this shit and more, minded my own business and lived my life the way I chose without getting caught.
I never blamed anyone for anything. Look at it all now though, who's to blame?
You are, you were there.
I did nothing and my conscience is clean. All the best in the struggle, I'll wage my own struggle and as ever, as just a man, I will win.
