In ALL my years of growing up. There were a few things that I NEVER realized, understood, or maybe even thought of UNTIL, until Loosing My Mother. Something's she would say or do, I didn't quite grasp the meaning, or even realize the sacrifices she made, the pain she went thru to see me or one of my brothers suffer from pain or disappointment. The TOTAL UNCONDITIONAL LOVE that you can only get from a parent. Especially a Mother.
wow i haven't heard this song for more then 20 yrs maybe a little more. never saw the video. my 5th grade teacher gave this song to all my classmates and me as well. on the last day of school. i can't remeber what i did with my tape of the song. but i still remeber the song title.i just started to remeber the song. thanks for posting the song. brings alot of memories for me.
@fearqueen27 oopps i just notice i put 20 years lol sorry about that . well it's almost... almost... been about that much. i'm guessing about 15 r 16 yrs.
loooooooove this song. my mom dedicated this song to me i couldn't stop crying. I thikn i will have a special dance for her in my wedding and have it play this song.
I used to play this song for my baby daughter when she came in the world. She is 16 now and when she gets home today, I will reintroduce her to it. Thanks for sharing this.
This is a beautiful song,It makes me think of my son he is 2 now it took us 10 years to have him and he is just so special to us! Andrew was a gift from God.
LOL Those were the days when kids actually went outside and were active. If they were to make a video like this now in 2010, wouldn't be any kids outside playing basketball, dancing and everything. They'd show regina singin, then when they cut to the kids, they'd just be at home, on facebook or playing PS3.
This song makes me cry thinking about my babies especially when she says:
I would try to shield your innocence from time, but the part of life I gave you isn't mine, I'll watch you grow, so I can let you go....beautiful song!
ohyeah, 209esperanza let love and let go, and the innocent one is free as a bird, to come and go and think as they please.. freeebirds all.. tears tears~ x(Dc):
Jesus...this song just made me cry yet again...it makes me think of my Grandma...I know that if you could cry my tears, I know you would...May God keep your soul in peace Grandma, I love you!
A simply beautiful song, with excellent lyrics that expresses every parent's true feelings and hopes for their kids. God bless you Regina, a beautiful, talented woman with a beautiful voice and there is no one who can sing like you. Many imitators, but never any duplicators.
I remember when this song first came out. My mother use to sing this song to me. I did not understand it back then. I so get it now. Thanks ma for everything and thank you GOD for choosing her to be my mommy.
another master piece from Ms Belle. "If I could" and "Make it like it was" just gives me the shivers. So much emotion, you feel every note like a punch in the gut. I refer to her as Ms Belle because she deserves much more attention then she gets. I can't name a vocalist who is better, maybe equal but not better. Regina Belle, you are a shinning star.
What an amazing star -- Regina Bell! The first time I heard this was by a little girl named Jessica Wilson on a broadcast celebrating the Apollo theater. I wonder whatever happened to her. She moved my soul! She was copying Regina Bell's version (this one). Both artists stole a piece of my heart with this song.
The lyrics tell it all. Thank you Regina for your beautiful voice and choosing to give us this tune. I always cry when I hear this song because this is a song that to me is the best of the best for a "Mother's Day" song. My mother passed away a few years ago and I really miss her.
my mother wanted this sung at her funeral... we all got mad when she said it....i never even considered she would die one day..i guess it was her way of telling us how it feels to be a mother...i understand now exactly how she must have felt
when I searching for it i thought whitney sung it :) my mama sung this to me when i was little now i actually know what it mean..and wen i have kids ima sing it to them
My mom used to dedicate this song to us. It is still very hard to listen to it without crying. Regina Belle did this song justice. I love Nancy Wilson's version also.
My mother sang and dedicated this song to me during her one woman show in NYC. All I could do was sit at the table in the audience and cry...face in hands!
i dedicated this song to my oldest daughter. she is suffering now with her own children and i feel very deeply for her.... this songs says it all.. god bless all our children
MJ, If I could, I would have suffered the heartbreak u had that assisted in creating a prescription drug habit. Its too late now. I pray u peace. RIP MJ our King of POP
I always loved this song. Listening to this song now, after I've given birth to a beautiful little girl, it resonates with me so much more deeply. A love unable to be fully expressed...
My mom always played this in the car when she drove me to my dad for me to spend the summer with my dad. I'd always cry in the back seat while both sang it. Ah memories I still get tears with this song it's so inspirtaional. <3
I dedicated this to my son when he was 3 years old, I don't think there is nothing a mother would not do for her child, this song moves me beyond words. I love you my son.
this song is the best song ever in old skool my mom used to sing it 2 me when i was younger than i sung it at the twitter center for my high school graduation and it still is hottttt
i remember the first time i saw her perform this, it was on general hospital in the early 80s at tanias funeral, i balled so much. then when my kids were born i thought of this song and what i want to protect them from. it always brings tears to my eyes.
this song touches me so deeply..cause i love my mother and would and forever do right by her..she dedicated this one to me and my brother before we were both born. I LOVE YOU MOM XOXOXOXO
I dedicate this song to my kids with all my love and best wishes for whatever they wish to do. In hopes that they will always think of me whenever they hear this song and know mama is always smiling down on them no matter where or what. I love y'all sooooooooooooooooooo much.
she sure did. she has a good voice. its just that something is off. whitney is able to hold longer notes with that punching bag-like vibrato. she was something else. regina was standard. anyway, this song will get you when you go through some things. my wishes goes out to all of those in pain. weve cried together
Regine is my all time favorite singer. I have a 14 year old daughter, and i would if i could do anything possible to make her life wonderful, filled with love and happiness.
absolutely beautiful song! I have always liked this from the 1st time I heard it. Cry every time and now that I'm a mother it means so so much more to me.
1993. new jack swing was just ending. mariah carey released music box and took over mtv. all i wanted to listen to was kris kross ice cube yo-yo and das efx. i turn on video soul on bet and listen to regina belle tear this song to piece and i gained a new appreciation for ballads. WITH MEANING!

Barbra Streisand's version of this song is much better! It's better it's like butter! This might sound modern, but her delivery is boring. Her style sounds ordinary. I didn't feel the emotional impact of the song in the way that she sung it...
she also has done duets with peabo bryson, everyone was a hit, also a live duet on showtime at,the apollo, with peabo, hopefully, some one can post it,it is magic
I agree with everyone here. I saw her sing this at The Apollo. A woman beside me gave me a tissue for my tears. My son was only 15-16 at the time. Very moving, deep lyrics.
wow this brings back memories my mother would ALWAYS sing this to my brother and me. i cant wait until i have a family and im singing it to my children one day :)
Wow words can't describe how much this song means to me. My only baby will be 15 tomorrow seems like time just went by so fast. She will be off on her own before i know it. This song describe just how i feel about her. Just how EVERY parent feels about there child(ren). :)
Thanks for posting this video. I've heard many versions of this Ray Charles song but even his version isn't as good as Regina's and yet Céline Dion, Barbra Streisand have sung it, but none as well as Régina. Gladys Knight's version ain't bad. Still, my heart only beats for Regina's version. So Thank you for this beautiful gift.
I agree, this is the best of the best. You can tell, she put her heart, soul and mind into singing this tune. Many may record it but I only hear the true meaning when REGINA sings.
Regina babeeeeeeee......beautiful, senuous, ,mellow and soulful. Thank you and god bless you and your family. And thanks for sharing this Zen. A true CLASSIC!!
Thank you for posting this song...I have been searching all over for it...my mother is my best friend and when I was a little girl she used to play this for me when I was going through a rough patch...ily Mommy!!!
Very moving song by such a gifted and beautiful artist. What a gorgeous voice: husky, sensuous, powerful. Great class and pathos! Also, listen to 'Baby come to me': to die for! What a uniquely talented Lady! Thank you! Love from Brussels, Belgium and bless America the Beautiful.
I danced with my father at my wedding to this song. I did not want the traditional "Daddy's Little Girl" It was a dance with my father I will never forget. I dont think he forgets it either. He was dissapointed at first that I chose something other than Daddy's Little Girl but when he heard this song there was no regrets.
I love this song! A Fan 4 Life From East St. Louis!!!!!

I used to always love this song growing up when I was a child but it wasn't until I had my one year old daughter that I understood what it meant,
Thank you regina for encouragement for the future on when to step back and when to step in.

Verses like this:If I knew......
I would have tried to change the place I brought you to.
Now there isn't much more that I can do.
But I would if I could...
Is why we should be better people now - so we don't have to say that...

Hi Zeniquez,
Thanks for posting this video.
