This was a Sydney Opera production with David Hobson and Cheryl Barker. The director, Baz Luhrmann, changed the setting to post-WWII, and it kind of works. Hobson's tenor is higher than most and doesn't appeal to everyone, but he can hit any high note beautifully. To hear more of him, he was the lead in Orphee et Euridice the following year in a role written for a countertenor, and he did it well - and shirtless after the first act! The DVDs for both Boheme and Orphee are available online.

Hey People,the producers and writers of Rent did´t rip off out of Puccini because he didn't write the libretto,Luigi Illica and Giusseppe Giacosa were the playwriters based on a novel by Henry Murger.In fact there's another Boheme written by the also great italian opera composer Leoncavallo,it exist a german operetta "Das vielchen vom Montmartre" and a spanish zarzuela "Bohemios" all based on the same book. I guess the rights of the novelist expired.Excuse my english I speak spanish.

An opera is not a concert. If you want a voice, go for the great tenors in concert. As a "show" this is brilliant !! Young people playing young people. Acting excellent. Went and ordered the DVD

I do not agree. His High C in the aria "Che gelida manina" was excellent. Besides, he sings better that some other singers I have heard from New York (which are suposed to sing excellent). Have a nice day

how the hell does he fuck up the pronounciation like 6 different times and still have a carreer?? Jesus christ, learn the words beforeyou take on a role. It was alright besides that, mediocre, but somewhat watchable. Just pisses me off he screwed up the ending

baz lurhmann directed it. and it's set in the 1950's so the price of type writers would have dropped considerably compared to the 1830's when it was originally set

@omglolwtfjk - Rent. like so much of the culture of today is a sad, sad derivative, inferior in every possible way, watered down and stuffed with inappropriate rhythms and tropes. Rent will disappear to become a footnote, while La Boheme will be re-staged and loved for as long as western culture survives.

It is EXACTLY why he wears that jacket. He's the equivalant of a biker boy.... and grease somehow is the same basic story.. in a way.
