Just an observation. The Russians were using paratroops, very early on. Their version jumped from aircraft into the snow sans 'chutes. Very interesting period of military trials etc.
There's a great new novel out about the Green Devils assault on Fort Eben Emael, by Harvey Black. Book 2, which is due out this year is about their assault on Crete and involves the same characters.
Fantastic!!! My old man's in one of your photos. One of three Fallschirmjager coming out of a bombed out building. Young guy on the right. It,s from the Luftwaffe magazine "Der Adler" and is a still from a newsreel.

@packr72 Paratrooping in '41 was still in its infancy. All nations that used that method for inserting troops into battle suffered high casualties. The Germans on Crete took heavy casualties cause they underestimated the number of troops they were up against, Ultra intercepts of all their LZ's and ferocity of Cretan resistance. Maybe we never pulled off a strategic coup like Eban Emael but we were the first country to defeat a German assault supported by tanks and dive bombers. Tobruk Apr.'41
The elite wha ha ha. Crete May 1941. Aussie and Kiwi infantry slaughtered the vicious nazi bastards in their thousands. In hand to hand combat these losers got their just desserts, a bayonet in the guts. They're all in hell now sucking on shitlers cock.
@packr72 Keep sniffing nazi arse crack dude. Most of the allied "casualties" on Crete were Prisoners of war. We Australians only lost 240 men as KIA's on Crete. We also smashed the the soldiers of the 5th Mountain Div. in the Battle of 42nd Street. Unfortunately lamentable mistakes were make by the Allies that turned certain victory into a defeat. As For Monte Cassino, Australians didn't fight there. If we did, those nazi bastards would have been cleaned up in double quick time.
@lew7272 pows count in war buddy, the german paratroopers suffered heavy loses because of faulty equipment, ei parachutes and the fact that all of the squads weapons were carried down in canisters, too bad that aussies never took a major fort like eben emael with only 100 men
a German boxer who was heavyweight champion of the world between 1930 and 1932. His two fights with Joe Louis in the late 1930. Schmeling being a paratrooper participated in the 1941 Battle of Crete
Very rare to see a British or American member of the Armed Forces recognise the bravery and quality of a force from WW2 Germany. Quality recognises quality.
To quote Alexander Cadagan, a high ranking British civil servant during the war diary entry, 27th May 1941:
"Germans are past masters in the art of war - and great warriors. If we beat them, we shall have worked a miracle."
@gx917rsv I disagree entirely. Certainly from the British perspective, the Germans were & are highly respected by the British armed forces. Over the years, I have spoken to numerous British WW2 veterans, I am yet to meet one who did not have considerable respect for the Germans. Even today, the Fallschirmjagerlied is sung by British Para's on occasion. The Germans have similar character traits to the British, tough, dogged, stoical, disciplined-they are superb fighters.
Good to hear. It is not often you do, especially the crap from the British rag press, or when it comes to football, the English seem to be tripping over themselves to insult the Germans. Perhaps there is more respect from the military.
@gx917rsv Not sure which newspapers you have been reading! I wouldn't worry too much about the gutter press. Football?! An irrelevant game at best........... I think the sheer volume of German cars in the UK says rather a lot, the Germans are highly regarded as a general rule. Personally, I believe we have far more in common than that which might divide us! As I said earlier, I am yet to met a WW2 veteran who did not respect the Germans.
@FallschirmjagerElite, No doubt about it! We modeled our airborne after their guys. We've got the best now, but we learned from the best. It wasn't political, just true grit. Commitment and spirit were exceptional qualities. W Cryts
German paratroopers proved their high skills in the battle of crete.

Liverpool. I was attached for a few years to the German army in the seventies, I speak German. I just throw that in for what it is worth!
Interesting stuff. I envy you the opportunity to talk to German war vets & obtain their views & opinions. When it comes to the opinions of the Germans, I have been limited to reading their views. he was no nazi and you try to blemish his spotless reputation

Sorry..I guess the first airborne troops is russia, i ever read that around 1930, before ww2 began. russia invited many generals from europe including German to see their "show of force"..so in that time russian showed their airborne!..the most interesting generals were the Germans..so after that these german generals recruited an airborne brigade and improve them secretly
but after the tragedy in Crete island, German stopped this Brigade after they got a heavy lost!
they didn't jump in full kit because of their parachutes. the rpz-25a (rückenpackzwangsauslösung = backpack enforced opening chute) did not enable them to land upright. they had to do a summersault landing. a full kit would have lead to severe injury or death in that case. so far for the side-arm quest.
i think the fallschirmjager was 1 of the best trained soilders in the ww2 but what i do not understand is why they only jumped with there side arm and not full kit? sure this must have caused problems for the fallschirmjager when looking for there wepon etc and slowed down there reaction time to return fire and attack?
A average fallschirmjager batalion carried twice as much MG's and mortars as their Whermacht and Waffen SS counterpart. This in combination with their special training made them elite warriors.
Disaster at D-day by Peter Tsouras. Mind you, it is a alternative history story but the author has done his homework very well. When I find the exact phrase and perhaps a source reference I will post it.
actually wehrmacht means "defense force"; like PAK (panzer abwehr kanone--tank defense canon, and FLAK--flieger abwehr kanon--airplane defense canon). You're right about the constituent elements. And despite that I speak German, my spelling of it sucks. Sorry.
Fallschirmjägers were the elite of the Wehrmacht (armed forces)!! Wehrmacht consisted of the Heer (army) , Kriegsmarine (navy) and Luftwaffe (air force)
okay okay. Thanks I get what u mean. They're a armed force. What I'm saying is they're part of the luftwaffe, unlike American, part of the Army. Thanks anyway:)

Great to see thanks..They not only had courage to jump, they were extemely good fighters.Hard to beat.

They also had the most Modern Weapons and Tactics at that time

I want documented proof of that. Link me either books or a website. If what you say is true I would be very interested in reading that.

I don't know the exact page, but I read it in;
Disaster at D-day by Peter Tsouras. Mind you, it is a alternative history story but the author has done his homework very well. When I find the exact phrase and perhaps a source reference I will post it.

wehrmacht means armed forces. That includes the luftwaffe, Heer (army), and Kriegsmarine
breakingben29 3 years ago
actually wehrmacht means "defense force"; like PAK (panzer abwehr kanone--tank defense canon, and FLAK--flieger abwehr kanon--airplane defense canon). You're right about the constituent elements. And despite that I speak German, my spelling of it sucks. Sorry.

I know what you are saying n00ssuck but the fallschirmjagers are luftwaffe, and you are 100% right, they were the elite.

fallschirmjagers were the elite of the Wehrmacht
n00bssuck 3 years ago 2
They're not part of Wehrmacht, they're a branch of Luftwaffe.

Fallschirmjägers were the elite of the Wehrmacht (armed forces)!! Wehrmacht consisted of the Heer (army) , Kriegsmarine (navy) and Luftwaffe (air force)
KNIhokki 3 years ago
okay okay. Thanks I get what u mean. They're a armed force. What I'm saying is they're part of the luftwaffe, unlike American, part of the Army. Thanks anyway:)
Tuxedo12 3 years ago
Your absolutely right!! US Paras are part of the Army and German FJ, part of the Air Force.
