I miss my rats. I wish they live a lot longer than two years on average. Being that I had seven of them, I had to go through this horror of death seven times. I made them as comfortable as possible when they were dying. If I ever have rats again, two will be the max. I made the mistake of getting the one male I had a girlfriend. She got pregnant five times before I gave her away with her babies. I kept the six sons and the father. They all lived passed the two year average too.
I actually just held my first rat today. The pet store owner recommended a pet rat for my daughter over a hamster or other rodent. I have to say I liked the little bugger immediately. I would say to others, don't knock it till you have tried it. I cant wait to see how my husband reacts. He is a little creeped by the idea. I bet he falls for their charms too. : ) sorry for your loss.
i completely understand what you went through .. i once had two hamsters they were both girls and the smallest one named eliza had a tumor and we did not know what it was it just kept getting bigger and my mother did not want to take her to the vet so one day it reached her heart and she died .. my mom took me to get new baby hamsters i asked why and she told me she died that day and that was why and i broke down in the store and started crying they are like family i am soo sorry for your loss

m in so much pain... I just went in to pet my little baby Benjamin. Only to find his cool body laying peacfully... He had died in his sleep. My sweet little baby was only a year and 2 days old. we had just celebrated his B-day... His brother Jerry is so distraught. They spent every moment together. He was the 3rd to leave me, but it only gets harder everytime.
Nice video. It can be really hard when ypu lose a pet. I have experince of that when my dogs have died. I have two female pet rats and my dad and mothe has a nice dog and more. when they die I will get more upset than when many humans die...hope your rat are in heaven and have a nice time. Aww! She looks like my Izabell! Rats are the best pets I've ever had and that's saying something. I've had cats, dogs, bearded dragons, turtles, snakes, mice, hamsters, birds, rabbits, frogs and maybe more (Can't remember) Rats are by far the best in my book. They're easy to take care of, they're smart, you can actually play with and teach them, they aren't loud or very messy, I've never been bitten, adaptable, they're clean (despite what people think) and all around great pets.

I feel your pain... I have a 3 almost 4 year old female berkshire that has had 3 mammary masses removed already as well as a melanoma off her back, she has developed yet another mass and I am reluctant to put her through surgery AGAIN. srry for ur loss if ever tend to keep another pet rat make sure u spade or nuture them they tend to live longer and have less chances of getting tumors.
i sympathise completely, i just had my pet rat Alyssa put down at 5 months old, 2 days ago because of an abscess. she had an operation to drain it and just didn't recover well so she had to be put to sleep as it wasn't fair :( they leave such a hole in your life when they go...xx
Aww poor lil thing. I have a fancy. On my 13th birthday she got stung by a bee and i put her back in her cage to let her calm down. i came back an hour later and her throat was swollen and she was weezing and her tail where she was stung was discolored :( i took her to the vet and she got a shot and was put on antibiotics shes doing really good right now. If i was bawling my eyes out when she was just sick then its gonna be bad when its her time to go
I have two babies of my own....well 3. Im getting another baby tomorrow. Their names are Max (albino dumbo ear) spaghetti (black and white dumbo ear) and Einstein (albino dumbo ear) My older babies are 2. the younger one is 7 months old. I know its of nature for them to pass on....but I wish It didnt have to happen :( Im sorry for your loss.
mammary tumors can be surgically removed, one our girls had four operations and recovered nicely each time...she lived to be 4.5yrs old, our oldest rat ever. the surgery is as between 90-160 bucks but well worth it.
if you're going to own a rats you've got to be prepared to care for them. sorry for your loss.
when i was 19 i had a pet rat that was all white..His name was Tinker..I kept him in an empty 5 gallon bucket..at night Tinker would get out of his bucket and roam around in my room...But soon as i woke up..I would catch Tinker going right back in his bucket...I'm 45 now....But i sure do miss that little guy

Rats have been household pets for ages -- far longer than snakes. I understand that rats are fed to snakes but that is nature. And yes, I shed lots of tears when my rats die. When your snake dies, how will you feel? I appreciate your taking time to post nasty messages but don't you think you could use your time better by spending time with your pet snake instead of slamming other people's choices for pets? Just a thought...

Yeah about 50% or more of female rats develop tumors (usually mammary tumors that are aren't cancerous) in their lifetime. If you spay your rat it cuts it down to about a 4% chance she will develop tumors. However spaying your rat is something most people won't spend $100 on since they only live to be 2-3 years old anyways.
My rat had the exact same kind of tumor. The vet we saw said we could choose to put her down or wait. He said that it wasn't an issue because it wasn't cancer. Just a tumor. I lost her in march and it's been very hard for me as well. I would like to get a new rat but whenever I think about getting one it feels like I would be trying to replace her. Just can't bring myself to do it yet. It's very hard.
It is hard, as you say. I always have mixed emotions about getting a new rat when I lose one. But, ultimately, the universe ends up sending me a rat that I fall in love with. Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes not so long. Take your time -- you'll know when you're ready to get a new one. Thank you for your comment!
I just came across this. Lois seemed like a real sweetheart. You get so attached to these little creatures & they take a piece of your heart w/them. I see she had the same type of tumors our girls had - they're both gone now & we've got 2 new girls - hairless dumbos, only 8 months old & several days ago I just found a tumor on the one! We're devastated since they're so young.
Ugh! I would be devastated too! I love hairless dumbos -- they're soooo cute! Sometimes medical intervention can help, but it's an expensive decision and one that does not always guarantee a better quality of life for your pet. this is so sad to watch, i had a hamster a few years ago and he died early.. he was like 2 or 2 and a half, i missed him so and i still do.
i dont know how to say this but i will put it this way: i set his corpse on fire more than a year after he died cause it was to hard for me to burry it.
and when didn't know for sure he was dead i bought him a toy, but a day later me and my dad saw it was dead :(

Excellent question. Unfortunately, rats are genetically prone to tumors which is why they are often used in laboratory settings for the research of cancer. Like humans, some foods and other external factors can cause cancer in rats (second hand smoke for example), so a good diet is key for any responsible pet owner.
I've had at least a dozen rats (single or two at a time) and they make great pets for resposible owners. The only thing I didn't like is that 90% of them died from huge tumors they would aquire after 1.5 yr. Almost all died from this - too much inbreeding I read.
The tumors are awful. Sometimes they can be successfully removed but cost and "quality of life" issues have to be carefully considered before surgery is indicated. My current rat, Dexter, so far is tumor free (he's one year old).
In my experience, rats do not bite unless they feel threatened (as any animal would do). Rats are very social and loving animals and as along as they are cared for and well socialized, they should not bite. I have never had a rat destroy anything. I'm not sure how your rats can destroy food unless you let it run around freely in your fridge (which you should not do) and as long as they have toys and chewable things in their cages, they should not chew on your clothes.
Well, the size of the rat depends on a variety of things, like whether its parents were big or small, so there's no real way of knowing how big a rat will be once it is an adult. I think a wiser decision is to have a rat that is healthy and well taken care of that you can love for many years. Good luck and thanks for your comment.

I've had at least a dozen rats over the years and NONE of them bite. Rats are very social animals and enjoy human interaction and being handled (as long as they are used to being handled from an early age). 6 1/2 years old for a rat is extraordinary. The average age for a rat is 2-4 years, so you must be doing taking excellent care of him. Be thankful for every day that he has with you. Good luck!

tis a hard thing to lose a friend like that. Dante was going to be the last rat for a while since 9 before have passed on. My wife had other ideas when she saw a tiny one all alone at a pet store. He is a good cage mate for the old guy. My wife made a scrap book of all the rats and for all the hard memories of those past on, there are more than enough good ones that we can cherish. Sorry to hear about your loss. I've seen the life of many a rat pass on. My old favorite Snuggles passed away on 2-6-06 and my newest little princess Shampoo passed away just a little over a month ago. I hate losing the little guys.

Salty was fairly young -- about a year and a half. Lois was about 3, which is more the average lifespan for a rat. I've had 2 rats that both lived to be 5 years, so treat your rats well and realize that every moment with them is precious. Thanks for checking out my videos!
Next time you get a rat, you should make sure it is spayed or nuetered, or if your breeding, neuter or spay after your done. That tumor could've been prevented that way.

I have two babies of my own....well 3. Im getting another baby tomorrow. Their names are Max (albino dumbo ear) spaghetti (black and white dumbo ear) and Einstein (albino dumbo ear) My older babies are 2. the younger one is 7 months old. I know its of nature for them to pass on....but I wish It didnt have to happen :( Im sorry for your loss.

mammary tumors can be surgically removed, one our girls had four operations and recovered nicely each time...she lived to be 4.5yrs old, our oldest rat ever. the surgery is as between 90-160 bucks but well worth it.
if you're going to own a rats you've got to be prepared to care for them. sorry for your loss.

when i was 19 i had a pet rat that was all white..His name was Tinker..I kept him in an empty 5 gallon bucket..at night Tinker would get out of his bucket and roam around in my room...But soon as i woke up..I would catch Tinker going right back in his bucket...I'm 45 now....But i sure do miss that little guy

Rats have been household pets for ages -- far longer than snakes. I understand that rats are fed to snakes but that is nature. And yes, I shed lots of tears when my rats die. When your snake dies, how will you feel? I appreciate your taking time to post nasty messages but don't you think you could use your time better by spending time with your pet snake instead of slamming other people's choices for pets? Just a thought...

my rat died a couple of hours ago, i cant stop crying he meant the world to me, really feeling for his brother though atm, he has curled up in the cage right where my lil Beau died, and he seems so depressed, will miss him alot :(

oh i feel very sorry for your rat, cause i have got an albino rat too. shes still a baby rat, not very big- and now im a little scared that she could die from a tumor too...

Yeah about 50% or more of female rats develop tumors (usually mammary tumors that are aren't cancerous) in their lifetime. If you spay your rat it cuts it down to about a 4% chance she will develop tumors. However spaying your rat is something most people won't spend $100 on since they only live to be 2-3 years old anyways.

well here in Europe i see people with rats that 8-12 years old so something must be wrong.
you could get a wild female and a wild male rat and mating them and keep their babies :) they should become older

My rat had the exact same kind of tumor. The vet we saw said we could choose to put her down or wait. He said that it wasn't an issue because it wasn't cancer. Just a tumor. I lost her in march and it's been very hard for me as well. I would like to get a new rat but whenever I think about getting one it feels like I would be trying to replace her. Just can't bring myself to do it yet. It's very hard.

It is hard, as you say. I always have mixed emotions about getting a new rat when I lose one. But, ultimately, the universe ends up sending me a rat that I fall in love with. Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes not so long. Take your time -- you'll know when you're ready to get a new one. Thank you for your comment!

I just came across this. Lois seemed like a real sweetheart. You get so attached to these little creatures & they take a piece of your heart w/them. I see she had the same type of tumors our girls had - they're both gone now & we've got 2 new girls - hairless dumbos, only 8 months old & several days ago I just found a tumor on the one! We're devastated since they're so young.

Ugh! I would be devastated too! I love hairless dumbos -- they're soooo cute! Sometimes medical intervention can help, but it's an expensive decision and one that does not always guarantee a better quality of life for your pet. My feeling is that I can give them as much love and caring as possible until Mother Earth calls them back. Good luck and thanks for your comment and watching my little Lois!

The people who bred hairless rats are animal torturers. I am from Germany and keeping hairless rats in Germany is cruelty to animals and you will get punished for that. They've a genetic defect and and like yours, they mostly become ill.always when I see a picture of a hairless rat I have to cry and I am really upset with the people who are responsible.

omg im crying now because my rat also died of that tumor but i knew when she was gona die so before i left for school i kissed her head goodbye and cried when i left and once i came back..she was gone :(

this is so sad to watch, i had a hamster a few years ago and he died early.. he was like 2 or 2 and a half, i missed him so and i still do.
i dont know how to say this but i will put it this way: i set his corpse on fire more than a year after he died cause it was to hard for me to burry it.
and when didn't know for sure he was dead i bought him a toy, but a day later me and my dad saw it was dead :(
i got a rat as a pat now, it is 4+ years old, very old for a rat.

he was so lovely. i have a rat and i just love him. he has NEVER bitten he is unbelievably careful when he takes food from me. he loves people. he is my first rat - i took him on because no-one wanted him and he has repaid that decision many times over

I'm planning to buy a couple of rats as a pet; i just want to know how do the tumors start? Is it a genetic thing or the way you care for them?

Excellent question. Unfortunately, rats are genetically prone to tumors which is why they are often used in laboratory settings for the research of cancer. Like humans, some foods and other external factors can cause cancer in rats (second hand smoke for example), so a good diet is key for any responsible pet owner.

I've had at least a dozen rats (single or two at a time) and they make great pets for resposible owners. The only thing I didn't like is that 90% of them died from huge tumors they would aquire after 1.5 yr. Almost all died from this - too much inbreeding I read.

The tumors are awful. Sometimes they can be successfully removed but cost and "quality of life" issues have to be carefully considered before surgery is indicated. My current rat, Dexter, so far is tumor free (he's one year old).

In my experience, rats do not bite unless they feel threatened (as any animal would do). Rats are very social and loving animals and as along as they are cared for and well socialized, they should not bite. I have never had a rat destroy anything. I'm not sure how your rats can destroy food unless you let it run around freely in your fridge (which you should not do) and as long as they have toys and chewable things in their cages, they should not chew on your clothes.

Well, the size of the rat depends on a variety of things, like whether its parents were big or small, so there's no real way of knowing how big a rat will be once it is an adult. I think a wiser decision is to have a rat that is healthy and well taken care of that you can love for many years. Good luck and thanks for your comment.

do rats bite a lot like hamsters do? i want a rat really bad but being that ive had seceral hammys in the past and they ALL did bite and it hurt bad so im kind of apprehensive to buy a rat if they bite like hamsters do.

I've had at least a dozen rats over the years and NONE of them bite. Rats are very social animals and enjoy human interaction and being handled (as long as they are used to being handled from an early age). I would recommend NOT buying a rat from a pet store -- find a local breeder or rodent/rat rescue organization in your area and adopt a rat. Good luck!

my pet rat flower has two of those lumps and she is the cutest rat iv ever seen she could die soon have u got any advice ur pet rat is so lovely and cute i had a pet rat called buttercup just like that she was flowers friend she died unexpectedly but i feel ur pain we loved our rats very much and we still do best of luck with dexter

6 1/2 years old for a rat is extraordinary. The average age for a rat is 2-4 years, so you must be doing taking excellent care of him. Be thankful for every day that he has with you. Good luck!

tis a hard thing to lose a friend like that. Dante was going to be the last rat for a while since 9 before have passed on. My wife had other ideas when she saw a tiny one all alone at a pet store. He is a good cage mate for the old guy. My wife made a scrap book of all the rats and for all the hard memories of those past on, there are more than enough good ones that we can cherish. Now, i only wish i would have video taped them. Anyways, videos like this are good for the public to see, ty

Sorry to hear about your loss. I've seen the life of many a rat pass on. My old favorite Snuggles passed away on 2-6-06 and my newest little princess Shampoo passed away just a little over a month ago. I hate losing the little guys.

Thanks lol I always got comments on "Shampoo". I named her that because she endlessly groomed and cleaned me. It fit. I was sad to see her go but I'm happy that I was able to spoil her and use her cuteness to show so many people at the park how cool rats can be. I just wish they lived longer, but as a fellow rat fan you know that it's still worth it. Happy ratting to you.

Albino rats are lab rats. They are usually bred with cancer :(
I lost my much loved pet rat fifi a few weeks ago and i didnt want her to ever leave me..:(

Salty was fairly young -- about a year and a half. Lois was about 3, which is more the average lifespan for a rat. I've had 2 rats that both lived to be 5 years, so treat your rats well and realize that every moment with them is precious. Thanks for checking out my videos!

Next time you get a rat, you should make sure it is spayed or nuetered, or if your breeding, neuter or spay after your done. That tumor could've been prevented that way.
