That awkward moment when, you thought Neutral Milk Hotel wasn't real when you read Will Grayson, Will Grayson, but then you come to this page and recognize the cover art and realize you had heard them many times before, you just never knew their name.

If you give other songs by this band a chance, Jeff Mangum's voice really does grow on you. His voice goes from odd and nasally-sounding to crookedly sweet, intimate and fairly fitting. It's lovely, how much it changes.
@GlobalFireMammoth Hmm. Well, I DID eventually adjust to Billy Corgan's voice enough to love The Smashing Pumpkins, so maybe I could manage again for NMH, with some time and patience. :p
@TheChodefather A lot of people would agree with you, but personally I think his voice makes the song. And I think a lot of people would agree with me.

@Alexithymia28 Well actually they broke up in 2004 after Jeff Mangum had a nervous breakdown but they have since announced a new tour and have even played a few gigs already, they're going pretty much everywhere. They even came to Ireland and I really wanted to get tickets but they sold out, also when I say new tour I mean they're playing pretty much now.

Hello everyone, I fucking hate to do this, but I am.

Oh, and just to show that it's you who doesn't appreciate "humanity's variations" or the "complexity of the situation", not everyone who hates corporations or governments has anything to do with OWS or Guy Fawkes masks or liberal politics or any such nonsense. But yea. Music like this doesn't get made by people with politics like yours. And that's kind of the last word, isn't it?
Beautiful song. It's a shame those are the two featured comments. We're "in this together" with corporations the way someone locked in a room with a rabid pitbull is "in it together" with the pitbull.
@cauchamar You are more a part of the problem than they are. The reason the French Revolution escalated into the Terror is because of black-and-white assholes like you who found it easier to turn the ruling class into symbols than accept the complexity of the situation. You, who haven't the dexterity of mind to comprehend humanity's variations can't call anyone else an idiot. Go put on your Guy Fawkes mask and see how much good that actually does anyone but your own sense of self-satisfaction.
Sometimes things really are black and white, sorry. Corporations (and governments, for that matter) ARE evil. They're just evil. Hierarchical civilization is evil. There is no complexity, there are no shades of gray. I'll go put on my Guy Fawkes mask, you go watch a documentary titled The Corporation. Also nice to see that dexterity popped up on your word of the day calendar, you fucking quisling.
I'm a very insecure individual, therefore, I post provocative comments on the Internet. It's fun to call someone a hipster, because they usually are without realising it.
I'm pretty sure I'm not a "hipster". And that none of my posts here indicated I was. Americans nowadays are hilariously simple. They have like 5 or 6 categories of people, and in an argument they default to the one they assume the person they're debating belongs to. Because they only have ad hominem attacks, since it's too difficult to think. And of course when they run into an actual individual, matching no stereotype, they flail away. As you just did.
@cauchamar Hey "genius" you saying "Americans nowadays" is a blanket statement. Meaning, you too are guilty / a hypocrite. And now, since I'm an American, here's an ad hominem attack for you...faggot.
By default, I'm assuming everyone on this video is a hipster, and since OWS is like 40% hipsters, I come to the conclusion that you enjoy wooly hats in summer and thick rimmed glasses from the fifties. Also, why do you put so much effort into Internet arguments, it's not like they really mean anything anyway. Oh yeah, not American either.
Wait, a few posts ago you were all "viva la revolucion" "down with governments" and now you're saying it's better to be apathetic... Are you stupid or just trolling?
What a beautiful face I have found in this place circling around the sun...When I feel good and I think that I love everybody and everyone then I can say this and this song is a good reminder of those days :-)
Can we just listen to music and agree that we're all in this together, including these evil corporations? They're made up of people too, and maybe some of them like this song.
let's everyone just chill the fuck out and enjoy the music and hate the souless corporations.. they're the real bad guys hear.. they're like the trolls of real life
@Lanoring Jeff Magnum came out of his seclusion to participate in OWS and play a series of shows around the northeast, many of them in support of The Occupy Wall Street Movement. He's currently Announced his tour will be continuing overseas to Europe and then he hopes to tour the rest of the United States.
It took me quite a while to figure out that this was what a couple of my friends were singing...I like this song quite a lot, I think. Is that a trombone solo? Trombones FTW :)
@anonymousman555 Yes, the media, owned by corporations (NBC by GE, MSNBC by Microsoft, ABC by Disney, CBS by Westinghouse, then you have Newscorp, VIACOM, AOL Time-Warner...), has brainwashed us to protest the corporations. If that is the case, then maybe they are so stupid they deserve to be taken down.
It's crazy when you think about how this song was inspired by Anne Frank. Sometimes I think of this song and Anne Frank and how she went through so much and was able to keep such a positive outlook on life. Then I think of how bleak an outlook I keep despite the fact that I'll more than likely live a longer and more prosperous life than she did.... I guess it's that happy outlook on life (despite the constant reminder of death) that Jeff Mangum was trying to get across...
Here's an idea, everyone. Why don't we just move past what's "hipster" or "faggot" or "bigotry." Let's keep the politics comments on the political videos, and keep musical comments on music, please. I for one love this song and I also like Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, Led Zepellin, and plenty of other bands. I just like good music, and I would appreciate it if we could just focus on a song that is beautiful to me, especially lyrically. Thanks, everyone.
this song was played on democracy now this morning with people playing it in zuccati park after their victory today against the mayor, NYPD and other city officials attempted to evict the occupation! LONG LIVE #OCCUPYWALLSTREET !!!!
@Mitsyrules Looks like you prefer a bunch of shitty 80s metal. The typical metalhead douche who only listens to metallica, slayer, megadeth, and all of those other shitty bands who tried to be as good as sabbath and zeppelin. It's unfortunate that your musical taste is limited to such shitty music, now get off of this video and go headbang in your brutal mosh pit, dawg.
@iceseekers "Shitty" is arguable. There's a reason why these bands are still selling out stadiums after being together for 30 years - Because they're that fucking good. And yeah, they really, really do try to sound like Sabbath and Zeppelin, you can barely tell the difference between Black Magic by Slayer and Black Dog by Zeppelin. And sorry bro, but the bands I like are a lot better than Neutral Milk Hotel, in terms of technical skill and their composition. Neutral Milk Hotel is simpleton shit.
@iceseekers Apparently you couldn't read past that sentence, nor could you copy and paste it, nor could your lazy ass even type it out because you misquoted me, genius.
@Mitsyrules No, I read all of it. But, like most "metalheads" you seem to think technical skill alone determines the quality of music. "In terms of technical skill and their composition, neutral milk hotel is 'simpleton shit'" yeah, because every song that is simple is shit right? Completely disregard every beautiful yet simple song that has been released, if it's not composed technically, it's shit. Give me a fucking break.
@iceseekers Sorry bro, but I just looked at your favorite videos and you really listen to faggot shit. You also like Occupy Wall Street, which makes you twice a faggot.
@iceseekers It's not the bands individually, it's the amalgamation of all of them is what makes you have faggy, weak, ball-less musical taste. You wear Buddy Holly glasses and scarves, don'tcha? You really are a fucking faggot if you get insulted at someone calling you faggot, faggot. And also, I'm quite sure I'm older than you, more educated and have more life experience. I hate Occupy Wall Street because I work in downtown Manhattan and they're annoying hipster faggot douchebags.
Its funny because you came here to start a fight, got accused of spitting out ad hominem attacks and decided not to change your tactic accordingly.Trying to convince anyone here that you're more than 17 will prove difficult. What do you heavy metalers even sing about anyways?I can never hear any of the lyrics...
You fear to accept your homosexuality, you fear to accept that you're not too bright, you fear to accept that you're not handsome, you fear to accept that nobody gives a shit about who you are and what you say and you fear to accept that the days for highly paid low ranking wall street jobs might be soon over.
I pity you. You live a live in misery.
Poor little boy stop whining now! - Go listen to "Burzum" instead...
@iceseekers "fucking leech sucking the life out of the world, spreading your stupid, unjustified bullshit and bigotry." sounds like occupy wall street... ironic?
@redfungie How is OWS "sucking the life out of the world". Most of the things they stand for are completely justified, and in fact have NOTHING to do with bigotry". OWS could be managed slightly better, focusing it's aims better, but the movement itself is not comparable with those words.
thank u for this song...just thank you.

bunglebonce 3 months ago
@bunglebonce There is nothing in the lyrics about liking obscure music or collecting vinyl records so no this is not hipster music. GTFO.

Do they really play the saw? - Is that a real musical saw or just electronics?

This is a great song. I couldn't give a flying fuck if it's simple shit or if hipster ponces like it or if metaller cunts hate it. My ears like it.

Mitsyrules 3 months ago
@Mitsyrules what music do you like?
iceseekers 3 months ago
@Mitsyrules Looks like you prefer a bunch of shitty 80s metal. The typical metalhead douche who only listens to metallica, slayer, megadeth, and all of those other shitty bands who tried to be as good as sabbath and zeppelin. It's unfortunate that your musical taste is limited to such shitty music, now get off of this video and go headbang in your brutal mosh pit, dawg.
iceseekers 3 months ago
@iceseekers "Shitty" is arguable. There's a reason why these bands are still selling out stadiums after being together for 30 years - Because they're that fucking good. And yeah, they really, really do try to sound like Sabbath and Zeppelin, you can barely tell the difference between Black Magic by Slayer and Black Dog by Zeppelin. And sorry bro, but the bands I like are a lot better than Neutral Milk Hotel, in terms of technical skill and their composition. Neutral Milk Hotel is simpleton shit.
Mitsyrules 3 months ago
@Mitsyrules "In forms of technical skill" If that's what music was really about to you, I pity you.
iceseekers 3 months ago
@iceseekers Apparently you couldn't read past that sentence, nor could you copy and paste it, nor could your lazy ass even type it out because you misquoted me, genius.
Mitsyrules 3 months ago
@Mitsyrules No, I read all of it. But, like most "metalheads" you seem to think technical skill alone determines the quality of music. "In terms of technical skill and their composition, neutral milk hotel is 'simpleton shit'" yeah, because every song that is simple is shit right? Completely disregard every beautiful yet simple song that has been released, if it's not composed technically, it's shit. Give me a fucking break.
iceseekers 3 months ago
@Mitsyrules : Could it be that you're a little bit shaded, simple mind?
I got you: you're obsessed with everything with the word "black" in it; - Black Sabbath, Black Magic, Black Dog.
That's why you loathe Neutral MILK Hotel.
Shit, life could be that simple! - Yep! - Don't know why mine's often so complicated...

Mitsyrules 3 months ago
@Mitsyrules
Austin9599945 3 months ago
@Mitsyrules : You must live a life of many fears.
MrBaebel 3 months ago
@iceseekers "fucking leech sucking the life out of the world, spreading your stupid, unjustified bullshit and bigotry." sounds like occupy wall street... ironic?
redfungie 3 months ago
@redfungie How is OWS "sucking the life out of the world". Most of the things they stand for are completely justified, and in fact have NOTHING to do with bigotry". OWS could be managed slightly better, focusing it's aims better, but the movement itself is not comparable with those words.
