  • This is so beautiful

  • THIS VIDEO IS POTATO

  • watch?v=NRQW6wnGb1c

  • The Hectic Glow needs to exist now.

(Regardless, this song is beautiful and lovely.)

  • Am I the only nerdfighter that loved NMH before Will Grayson, Will Grayson?

  • @musicmanx15

    Not a chance :)

  • DFTBA guys

  • That awkward moment when, you thought Neutral Milk Hotel wasn't real when you read Will Grayson, Will Grayson, but then you come to this page and recognize the cover art and realize you had heard them many times before, you just never knew their name.

    Or was it just me?

  • I thought I was going to be hankrolld. I was not.

  • THIS WAS A REAL BAND?!?!?!?!? when i read Will Grayson Will Grayson i thaught it was something like An Imperial Afliction :/

  • @MinecraftWithMat yeh. i stand corrected. lol. but it would be so cool if there was a real An Imperial Affliction book. It sounded cool. =)))

  • @Gaara3621 yeah... i feel ashamed that i spend half an hour looking for it...

  • @MinecraftWithMat I thought it was real coz in the first pages there was an excerpt. =)

  • Ugh, bless you John. I forgot about this song. And it's only four chords, a guitar player's dream!

  • @EmilyJaneUnavailable Not only is it 4 chords, but it's even the "ice cream changes" that Hank made a video about that one time.

  • Is this that band that was in Will Grayson Will Grayson?

  • @Takaia42 yes! i thought it was made up lol

  • fishingboatproceeds! I love you more each day, man.

  • I was sent here by John Green. DFTBA!

  • The guy's voice just ruins it for me.

  • @doodsrslyWTF

I understand you. I felt like that at first about Neutral Milk Hotel.

If you give other songs by this band a chance, Jeff Mangum's voice really does grow on you. His voice goes from odd and nasally-sounding to crookedly sweet, intimate and fairly fitting. It's lovely, how much it changes.

  • @GlobalFireMammoth Hmm. Well, I DID eventually adjust to Billy Corgan's voice enough to love The Smashing Pumpkins, so maybe I could manage again for NMH, with some time and patience. :p

  • Hi /mu/

  • everyone needs to just shut the fuck up

  • Oh gawd an advertisement on this too?

  • I simply cannot feel this

  • @DmonkeyD1994 I agree, it's soulless and completely overrated.

  • This song is great. GREAT !!! It reminds me of Sgt. Pepper. Yup, it does.

    Second millennium style.

  • 8======D~

Courtesy of Hunter S. Thompson. (Raoul was here!)

  • um milk has a slightly acidic pH so yah

  • His voice is so gratingly nasally. /: This would be better if he were a better singer.

  • @TheChodefather A lot of people would agree with you, but personally I think his voice makes the song. And I think a lot of people would agree with me.

"Like a message broadcast from an underpass, all my favourite singers couldn't sing..."

  • @TheChodefather if you think this is nasally, you really need to lower your standards.

  • The most wonderful beautiful greatest thing I have ever heard. I dont know if Im the only one but this song just makes me think so deep. I cant even begin to explain the impact it has on my entire state of mind every time I hear it. This is the definition of good music. So much talent. If i only I could meet NMH and give them by dearest thanks for allowing me the priveledge to listen to this

  • @dylan7925

alright gay its not exactly Bach is it

  • @dylan7925 NMH is no longer around, Jeff Mangum is though I think. They broke up late 90's. Sorry hun.

  • @Alexithymia28 Well actually they broke up in 2004 after Jeff Mangum had a nervous breakdown but they have since announced a new tour and have even played a few gigs already, they're going pretty much everywhere. They even came to Ireland and I really wanted to get tickets but they sold out, also when I say new tour I mean they're playing pretty much now.

  • I am a metalhead that listens to a lot of death metal and some black metal. and i have to say, I like this. :D

  • @RubberToadstools want a medal?

  • @Doomistic yes, that would be lovely.

  • I don't know how anybody on earth can slag this track off. it really is the ultimate tearjerker and overall an absolute masterpiece of music.

  • yo i lesoned to this be for it have 10k vuse

  • FANf**kingTANO

  • 122 People don't understand the meaning of this song.

  • @SkippyEuphonium No one really knows.

  • @Xaxaar Well, to me the meaning is about the ephemeral beauty of dreams, and how quickly they escape from you much in the same way youth and life do. Then again, it's only my interpretation.

  • @BasementBeginnings Yeah I know, there are tons of interpretations out there, some better and more logical than others, but I was just pointing out the fact to Skippy over here that Jeff has never fully disclosed the meanings of these songs. Sure, he said what's inspired him in interviews, but show me where he says the absolute meaning of these songs. I'm pretty sure it's not out there. Sure, I have my own interpretation as well, but by no means do I claim it to be equal to Jeff's.

  • @BasementBeginnings Bummer dude.

  • @paintballmon135 I'm quite the bummer, aren't I...

  • Beware of the Needledrop fans

  • @timbalin45 comintagetcha!

  • @timbalin45 HAI! .D

  • Buff bald guy with Buddy Holly glasses sent me here. My first time listening to this song, and I like it. A lot! =D

  • apathetic lactose lodge

  • They played at my best friend's cousin's wedding. they r awesome.

  • @HeyBrittany16 LOL " Best friend's cousin's wedding"..... classic

  • @TheEvanCole I love how that was my friend on my account and not actually me ._.

  • this is an all around amazing song... beautiful lyrics <3

  • I am such a hipster, I knew these guys when they were Negative Cow Motel

  • @JakeBasketball443 cow is not the opposite of milk...idioth

  • @her0indragon Were does milk come from dumass?

  • @TheDebaser14 it obviously seems to come from your brain.

  • @JakeBasketball443 No your not hipsters don't call them selves hipsters

  • @5001crazylegs i'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic

  • @JakeBasketball443

Hipsters deny that they are hipster. You sir, are not hipster, you just simply have good taste in music

  • @Laurabelle997 Haha, dude, I'm pretty sure it was just a joke.

  • @Laurabelle997 watch out we have an anti joke rooster over here

  • @JakeBasketball443 Yeah, well I'm a time-traveler, and in the future they're known as Positive Ice Cream Resort.

  • will grayson sent me

  • I want to learn this song that I can truly be able to produce beauty.

  • In my opinion no song has reached the emotional or intellectual complexity of this song before or since it was created.

  • You guys are all so great and I love you all I really hope you all have a great day. This song makes me so happy you have no idea, it just reminds me of good things, ya know?! It's just so euphoric and lovely and it really makes me love life and the world I feel like if everyone just felt this song most of the worlds problems would just DISAPPEAR and everything would be beautiful. Oh my goodness.

  • "U mad bro" - you stole that from the U.S. It's alright, we were done wit it in 2008

  • I like the album artwork most of all.

  • It's an okay album. Nothing particularly special.

  • "Corporations (and governments, for that matter) ARE evil"... this is the most ignorant statement i have ever read...

  • Oh, and just to show that it's you who doesn't appreciate "humanity's variations" or the "complexity of the situation", not everyone who hates corporations or governments has anything to do with OWS or Guy Fawkes masks or liberal politics or any such nonsense. But yea. Music like this doesn't get made by people with politics like yours. And that's kind of the last word, isn't it?

  • @cauchamar if youre trying to get soemone to understand your view, dont say governments are evil. it makes u look like a fucking moron

  • @DEFxHOSTxBRO

HAHAHAHAAHHA. Good luck to you, "bro". You're gonna need it.

  • Beautiful song. It's a shame those are the two featured comments. We're "in this together" with corporations the way someone locked in a room with a rabid pitbull is "in it together" with the pitbull.

  • @cauchamar You are more a part of the problem than they are. The reason the French Revolution escalated into the Terror is because of black-and-white assholes like you who found it easier to turn the ruling class into symbols than accept the complexity of the situation. You, who haven't the dexterity of mind to comprehend humanity's variations can't call anyone else an idiot. Go put on your Guy Fawkes mask and see how much good that actually does anyone but your own sense of self-satisfaction.

  • @Sei1863

Sometimes things really are black and white, sorry. Corporations (and governments, for that matter) ARE evil. They're just evil. Hierarchical civilization is evil. There is no complexity, there are no shades of gray. I'll go put on my Guy Fawkes mask, you go watch a documentary titled The Corporation. Also nice to see that dexterity popped up on your word of the day calendar, you fucking quisling.

  • @cauchamar

You fucking hipster. Quit trying to sound smart, you look like an idiot. You will start no revolution, you will only piss normal people off.

  • @BagOfAngeredBees Out of curiosity, why do you have such an animosity towards "hipsters"?

  • @Ril3yIzBac Hipsters are Hippies without balls.

  • @Ril3yIzBac

I'm a very insecure individual, therefore, I post provocative comments on the Internet. It's fun to call someone a hipster, because they usually are without realising it.

  • @BagOfAngeredBees

I'm pretty sure I'm not a "hipster". And that none of my posts here indicated I was. Americans nowadays are hilariously simple. They have like 5 or 6 categories of people, and in an argument they default to the one they assume the person they're debating belongs to. Because they only have ad hominem attacks, since it's too difficult to think. And of course when they run into an actual individual, matching no stereotype, they flail away. As you just did.

  • @cauchamar Hey "genius" you saying "Americans nowadays" is a blanket statement. Meaning, you too are guilty / a hypocrite. And now, since I'm an American, here's an ad hominem attack for you...faggot.

  • @jaekn

    U mad bro?

  • @cauchamar

By default, I'm assuming everyone on this video is a hipster, and since OWS is like 40% hipsters, I come to the conclusion that you enjoy wooly hats in summer and thick rimmed glasses from the fifties. Also, why do you put so much effort into Internet arguments, it's not like they really mean anything anyway. Oh yeah, not American either.

  • Comment removed

  • @BagOfAngeredBees

I'm putting in a lot of effort. I don't know how you post so effortlessly when my posts require so much effort.

  • @cauchamar

You seem to be very... let's call it "passionate".

  • @BagOfAngeredBees

Passion sucks. Apathy is much better than passion.

  • @cauchamar

Wait, a few posts ago you were all "viva la revolucion" "down with governments" and now you're saying it's better to be apathetic... Are you stupid or just trolling?

  • @BagOfAngeredBees

Yes, I'm SOOOOOOOO stupid. That must be it. You've figured EVERYTHING out. You're totally getting it.

  • Jeff Magnum played at OWS so I guess that?

  • shut up hippies

  • these guys should Colin Meloy.

  • Fan-fucking-tastic. Yes yes yes.

  • What a beautiful face I have found in this place circling around the sun...When I feel good and I think that I love everybody and everyone then I can say this and this song is a good reminder of those days :-)

  • How strange it is to be anything at all.

  • I heard this song and got up and started swaying around my room

  • "And when we meet on a cloud

    I'll be laughing out loud

I'll be laughing with everyone I see

    Can't believe

How strange it is to be anything at all"

    How true is that....

  • the top comment is truly epic

  • This song is so amazingly written. One of the best I've ever heard, by anyone, and I am absolutely blown away by its beauty.

  • Why dislike... If you don't like the song just move on.

  • saying this is hipster music is like saying the misfits are a scene band

  • kinda sorta remind me of the morning benders

  • Can we just listen to music and agree that we're all in this together, including these evil corporations? They're made up of people too, and maybe some of them like this song.

  • @Sei1863 :')

  • Comment removed

  • let's everyone just chill the fuck out and enjoy the music and hate the souless corporations.. they're the real bad guys hear.. they're like the trolls of real life

  • What does OWS have to do with this video?

  • @Lanoring Totally.

  • @Lanoring Jeff Magnum came out of his seclusion to participate in OWS and play a series of shows around the northeast, many of them in support of The Occupy Wall Street Movement. He's currently Announced his tour will be continuing overseas to Europe and then he hopes to tour the rest of the United States.

  • @Lanoring Jeff performed at one

  • As far as hipster music goes this is pretty good B)))))

  • Hipster music.

  • @bunglebonce There is nothing in the lyrics about liking obscure music or collecting vinyl records so no this is not hipster music. GTFO.

  • @ariel12955

    Oooh.

  • @bunglebonce :D

  • @bunglebonce

ehhh fuck it it's still awesome

  • gay

  • It took me quite a while to figure out that this was what a couple of my friends were singing...I like this song quite a lot, I think. Is that a trombone solo? Trombones FTW :)

  • the best album of all time indefinably

  • @grody311 Corporations are not elitists.

  • It's crazy when you think about how this song was inspired by Anne Frank. Sometimes I think of this song and Anne Frank and how she went through so much and was able to keep such a positive outlook on life. Then I think of how bleak an outlook I keep despite the fact that I'll more than likely live a longer and more prosperous life than she did.... I guess it's that happy outlook on life (despite the constant reminder of death) that Jeff Mangum was trying to get across...

  • Here's an idea, everyone. Why don't we just move past what's "hipster" or "faggot" or "bigotry." Let's keep the politics comments on the political videos, and keep musical comments on music, please. I for one love this song and I also like Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, Led Zepellin, and plenty of other bands. I just like good music, and I would appreciate it if we could just focus on a song that is beautiful to me, especially lyrically. Thanks, everyone.

  • Is this that hipster shit that /mu/ won't stop gushing on about?

  • Thumbs up if Democracy Now sent you here! :)

  • @xenon1919 DemocracyNow sent me here. thumbs up for listener supported community anti-corporate media!!! WHOOP!

  • R.I.P. Aaron Watson xxxxxxx

  • Dan Mangan covered this in this last concert =D

  • I heard of this band from Parks and Rec. I didn't think they were real but oh, they're more than real they're just amazing. :')

  • this song was played on democracy now this morning with people playing it in zuccati park after their victory today against the mayor, NYPD and other city officials attempted to evict the occupation! LONG LIVE #OCCUPYWALLSTREET !!!!

  • Do they really play the saw? - Is that a real musical saw or just electronics?

  • This is a great song. I couldn't give a flying fuck if it's simple shit or if hipster ponces like it or if metaller cunts hate it. My ears like it.

  • just discovered this band. YES.

  • ok so its just a doo wop song

  • OCCUPY WALL STREET NOW!!!!!!!

  • @alhabbo

I can fucking smell the hipster on you. It's vile.

  • @BagOfAngeredBees im a hippy and i love it! dont hate

  • this whole album is class

  • @Mitsyrules what music do you like?

  • @Mitsyrules Looks like you prefer a bunch of shitty 80s metal. The typical metalhead douche who only listens to metallica, slayer, megadeth, and all of those other shitty bands who tried to be as good as sabbath and zeppelin. It's unfortunate that your musical taste is limited to such shitty music, now get off of this video and go headbang in your brutal mosh pit, dawg.

  • @iceseekers "Shitty" is arguable. There's a reason why these bands are still selling out stadiums after being together for 30 years - Because they're that fucking good. And yeah, they really, really do try to sound like Sabbath and Zeppelin, you can barely tell the difference between Black Magic by Slayer and Black Dog by Zeppelin. And sorry bro, but the bands I like are a lot better than Neutral Milk Hotel, in terms of technical skill and their composition. Neutral Milk Hotel is simpleton shit.

  • @Mitsyrules "In forms of technical skill" If that's what music was really about to you, I pity you.

  • @iceseekers Apparently you couldn't read past that sentence, nor could you copy and paste it, nor could your lazy ass even type it out because you misquoted me, genius.

  • @Mitsyrules No, I read all of it. But, like most "metalheads" you seem to think technical skill alone determines the quality of music. "In terms of technical skill and their composition, neutral milk hotel is 'simpleton shit'" yeah, because every song that is simple is shit right? Completely disregard every beautiful yet simple song that has been released, if it's not composed technically, it's shit. Give me a fucking break.

  • @Mitsyrules : Could it be that you're a little bit shaded, simple mind?

I got you: you're obsessed with everything with the word "black" in it; - Black Sabbath, Black Magic, Black Dog.

That's why you loathe Neutral MILK Hotel.

Shit, life could be that simple! - Yep! - Don't know why mine's often so complicated...

  • @iceseekers Sorry bro, but I just looked at your favorite videos and you really listen to faggot shit. You also like Occupy Wall Street, which makes you twice a faggot.

  • Comment removed

  • @iceseekers It's not the bands individually, it's the amalgamation of all of them is what makes you have faggy, weak, ball-less musical taste. You wear Buddy Holly glasses and scarves, don'tcha? You really are a fucking faggot if you get insulted at someone calling you faggot, faggot. And also, I'm quite sure I'm older than you, more educated and have more life experience. I hate Occupy Wall Street because I work in downtown Manhattan and they're annoying hipster faggot douchebags.

  • @Mitsyrules

Its funny because you came here to start a fight, got accused of spitting out ad hominem attacks and decided not to change your tactic accordingly.Trying to convince anyone here that you're more than 17 will prove difficult. What do you heavy metalers even sing about anyways?I can never hear any of the lyrics...

  • @Mitsyrules : You must live a life of many fears.

You fear to accept your homosexuality, you fear to accept that you're not too bright, you fear to accept that you're not handsome, you fear to accept that nobody gives a shit about who you are and what you say and you fear to accept that the days for highly paid low ranking wall street jobs might be soon over.

I pity you. You live a live in misery.

Poor little boy stop whining now! - Go listen to "Burzum" instead...

  • @iceseekers "fucking leech sucking the life out of the world, spreading your stupid, unjustified bullshit and bigotry." sounds like occupy wall street... ironic?

  • @redfungie How is OWS "sucking the life out of the world". Most of the things they stand for are completely justified, and in fact have NOTHING to do with bigotry". OWS could be managed slightly better, focusing it's aims better, but the movement itself is not comparable with those words.
