@perfectparodys Thanks so much! We really appreciate your comment. We work hard to make these tutorial topical and understandable for young players as well as older ones. Hope you subs us and if you would, please "Spread the Word."
The real trouble for me starts after i beat the first defender using the hip-to-hip attack, i find that once i get passed him the center usually steps in and blocks me when i go for the lay up. Any advice on preventing this?
@dmitriandersonjr This is a good choice if they stop you. Best thing to do here is to make a Jump Stop to come under control and use one of our Finishes at the Rim or reverse turn and kick it out to one of your team mates.
@monnyg1 Just yesterday saw a note from Rick Patino, Louisville Coach said the same thing, but used different words to express the need to NOT LOOP OUT and away from the defender as you help them when you do this. His words were body to body on the attack!
This demonstration would often lead to a travel in europe. Not the move in general, but the fact that he moves his pivot foot before he dribbles. i dont know whether or n ot it is a travel in usa, or it's just the slow motion that makes is visible.
@punanipizza Slo-motion does bring a lot to the eye that is missed when you goo at game speed. The Rule Book state that you only have to have the ball out of your hand before the pivot foot leaves the floor to be a travel. Many players believe that the ball must have hit the floor before the pivot comes off.
What's your opinion on taking the first step with the foot opposite of the direction you are driving (i.e. driving right/first step with left leg)? I'm a youth coach and I've seen this starting to creep into some practices as it is getting taught by more coaches in my area. It's not how I was taught, but I can definitely see some advantage since it seems like it's easier to get that hip-to-hip seal that we are trying to accomplish. Thoughts?
@unsandpiper Have not heard of this much before, but might be really effective if you are already into your dribble. If you are attacking from a standing position we feel that you can get the advantage on the defender immediately by using our "Hip-to Hip and Long One-N-One technique." Probably a matter of Personal choice.
@ShotScience I hadn't heard of this before I started coaching this year. I guess at the coaching clinics that are being run in my area they've been telling coaches to teach it this way. It seems to make sense from a "sealing the defender" point-of-view, but I also think it will be tough to execute if the defender is playing the ball handler properly. I guess I will keep coaching it the way they want me to, but I'll show my son/daughter your way instead ;) Thanks!!
@tothebeaty0 The only risk is "If you do not take the Long One-N-One attack." With the use of this technique they should not have an opportunity to get a position in front of you to take the charge, but will commit the foul on you instead.
coach, when i drive i tend to squint my eyes and most of the time i end up getting blocked or missing. how can i get myself to be more comfortable on my drives?
@TheGadiel1234 "Hip-to-Hip" means that when you attack the defender you pass by him so close that your hip may touch his hip. What this means is that you DO NOT take a wide path around him to avoid contact, but instead you try to come as close as possible to him as you attack looking for him to make contact with you, possible foul on him. If you do this he has little time to react to stay in front. If you go wide he has more time to force you to the sidelines. He has the advantage.
@skandakk Thanks! We hope it helps your game. If you learn to execute using this technique, you will either get fouled or you are by them to the hoop.
isnt that a travel? he receives the ball then he fakes the shot while moving his right foot, then leaves pivot then dribbles. I think thats a travel, can u answer COACH?
@SeanFord242 You attack him hard and expect contact!! If he is spread out too much and you cannot get by him, use our Long One-n-One Attack and he should be charged with a foul. Work on your "Basket Attacks" as this is really hard for the defense to control. Please check out all of our Dribble Attacks!
Coaches, thank you for this wonderful video.I would just like to ask, if you're doing this hip to hip does your hip have to be lower than the opponents or if it is not required would you prefer to have a lower hip in order to be able to seal the defender quicker?
what do i do when i have my first defender on my hip and the second defender helps. they know im going to pass. is there anyway i can score in that situation
@98765gify One thing that you really need to do is set the defender up with a "pre-move" such as a shot fake or jab step to create a little more space. Using our "Long one-n-one attack will also help in getting past the defender. Check out our video on this move.
@TheLebron6 that AND sealing your defender to your hip so that you don't allow them the space to catch up with you and cut off your drive. Also, if they bump you, they'll get whistled for the foul!
I've just found your great videos and spent the last couple of hours watching them all. I hope you can answer a question for me.
I leave too much of a gap as I go past a defender because I'm worried that they will step across my line (rather than stepping back and opening) causing a knee to knee contact. Sure I get a foul but I don't want to damage anyone in the process. Do you have any tips for staying close but avoiding that kind of collision or am I worrying over nothing?
@fadrus: You are worrying too much! Attack them, they don't want the contact either, but for a different reason. They cannot take a charge if you have have used the Hip-to-Hip attack because they take the chance of a foul. Go after them. Thanks for watching our videos. We really appreciate it.
Great series of basketball videos ! as well as interesting video production.
I'm wondering how the North/South aggressive first step can work in a 3 on 3 game where the defender will push or hold you on this move. In these kind of games it is very difficult to get past them for the layup.
Thus, I try to avoid the defender "hold/foul" by going more East / West to pull up for a J which is what you advise against. Does this mean I should just pass ?
@getsmartpaul: This is a great question. You might take a look at our video on "The Hammer" as a way of getting them off your hip on the attack.
Where you have un-officiated games you may have a problem with this attack, however, you are giving into there hand-checking tactics. Go get em and forget that East/West attack if you want to get to the rack. Remember, the drive attack is the "most difficult thing for players to defend if you attack aggressively."
@mr2fresh21: Great question! When we speak of North and South attacks, we mean at an angle which may be more like northeast or northwest. The important thing here is to use the Long One-n-One and go Hip-tp-hip on your attack. If you do this, they have little else to do than bump you (foul) or open their stance and you blow by them. When you use the long step/dribble they have little time to react unless you loop around them, and then the may get the advantage.
Ok I need help I always get passed my first defender but what about getting passed the other defense while I'm running up to the rim how do I protect the ball while I'm running up 2 lay up and what moves do I use to dodge them in the air 2 avoid getting blocked
@1992fireflame: You are the same player asking about the "floater and the Tear Drop shots." These are not the answer for your problem. Develop some moves that you can use to attack this "Sht Down" defender. No one should be able to do this to you if you have spent the time to develop your game. We have in our YT video library, many answers to your problem, but it will take you some time to develop these. "LETS GET GOING!"
@1992fireflame Call a big man for a screen and play some pick and roll ... call a big man for screen without the ball so u can get open and when u get the ball u can do alot of different things ...
@ShotScience Moving without the ball I meant to get open it's not all about moving without the ball ... ( im basketball player not coach ) .. The point is that alot of people just stand on the courtand ask for ball ... but the moving without the ball is better so you can get open look and they will more time pass to him
@lightsw0rd: You are absolutely right on this one. The toughest players to guard are those who learn to move "WITHOUT THE BALL." It's an importan skill, especially since you might only touch the ball between 1-3 minutes per game.
@1992fireflame I recommend you work some give and go's with a teammate to shake that defender off. Also, use some pump fakes to get him up in the air. If he starts to back off the shot, then start taking your shot.
Whenever I play, I always try to drive through the defense. But I can never blow past them, they go back with me. Then they go up in my face once I'm close enough to get an easy lay up. If I try a jumpshot, they are up in my face. What should I do?

@1992fireflame: Well go to our video Long One - n - One and learn to take the first step and first dribble long and couple that with the "HIP-TO-HIP ATTACK" and you should be able to go by most defenders. Really check out the dialogue and video on this attack and you will find it very useful in your attacks on the rack.
@ShotScience The problem with that is that I always play as PG, and I start with the ball dribbling. If I used the long one n one, I would be called as a travel. Any suggestions
im goiing to go pro in europe thanks to u guys i play 8 hrs a day and practice and practice i love basketball its my life my passion i never had a real coach break it down how tp shoot or score using the hammer or sealing ...all ur vids made me a better player
That's a foul? Don't expect it to be called all the time. Me as a referee wouldn't have called it. Contact was made by the offensive player (protecting himself). Defensive player stepped sidewards and back, not clearly good enough for a foul. If the offensive player didn't push/defend himself chances are the contact would've been on the chest of the defender, i.e. possibly a charge.
So too bad the example isn't a bit more clear on the foul. Good comment on keeping the dribble, tho.
@cptfwiffo: If you check the rules, the defensive player must occupy a stationary position in front of the offensive player on contact. If not, the foul is on the defender. It can always be called a foul by some officials, however, it would never be a charge because of position. This move forces the defender into contact or to open up their hips leading to the opening to the rack. Thanks, however, for your comment.
Also, whenever I tell myself that I will attack the basket, once a defender gets in my way, I get rattled and I tend to shoot or pass. I really want to take it hard to the basket without getting stripped or blocked. But my fear seems to prevent me from doing this. How do I conquer this fear? Is this because of inexperience? Because if it is, I guess my only solution is to play a lot more. But some advice won't hurt, right? Just to speed up my improvement. I usually play the no. 2 position.
@MARKSMAN2318: Well, most players feel they cannot get by the defender so they resort to giving up the ball. If you work on this technique and are ready to "receive the contact" and continue to the hoop you will probably be successful. It, truly is a matter of little confidence. We recommend that you take a chance with the possibility that you will fail at first, but you will eventually succeed. Keep working on it and don't be afraid to fail at first. Let us know how it is going.
I have seen all your vids, but I can't seem to apply them properly. I feel that I can't get the fear of being stripped or blocked out of my head. Sometimes, I even get confused whether to shoot, drive or pass. "Triple threat", right? My problem is I can't seem to decide what to do when I have the ball. Is there any advice you can give for me to stay calm and do the right thing before I make a move?
@MARKSMAN2318: Play a lot more and don't be afraid to fail in the beginning. Most everything we learn in sports is about "Failure at first, then we begin to succeed." Remember when you were trying to learn to ride a bike? or Ski, snow board, or many other things? First we fail, then we begin to get it, after that, our successes out number the failures. Just keep working and success will eventually will come your way.
Hi Shotscience! When i drive, should i put my off hand on the defender's hip? Cos everytime i drive, i get my ball stripped by taller players (long hands).
@Rockflame: We recommend that you check out our video "The Long one-n-one." This explain how to deal with the problem AND also check out "The Hammer." These two elements will help solve your problem.
hey coach i'm goning to play 2 games to morrow.I did play some games to day and this did work 5 or 6 times but then they allways doubble teamd on me and i´m wery small and quick so its so hard for me to go on the big kids and if i try to shot they are allways in my face so it´s hard so what should i do
@MrSportfreak15: Well remember, if they double you then they leave one of your team mates open. Get him the ball. This will take care of the Double Team.
hey coaches does this attack need to be always started with a triple threat position?and coaches to be able to do this attack, all you have to do is you should make sure that when you drive you make your hip close to your defender's hip?
@defygreatness: Absolutely!!! You should be ready for his contact as you go hip-to-hip using the long one-n-one attack as this does not allow him time to get in front of you. He will often pivot to avoid you and you are off to the races! If there is contact on the hip-to-hip it will be his and should result in a foul. If we attack using looping footwork we allow him time to stay in front of us.
what's up coach tom..hope you're all fine there..still waiting for some of the videos your working on..am now used to in using your set point..not like before now when i learned it and comfy .. i feel if my shots are going in or not.. i know where the ball is going to.. iam prepared for the rebound..thanks alot

not like before..the rattle of the ring..the brick..
@FaIIOutBoy: A point to remember! It takes time to develop this technique. It may take several weeks to become a part of your attack. Let us know how it goes.
shot science, whats the best way to catch and hold the ball properly before shooting?because im kinda slow at it,looking at the ball first and fixing mg hold before shooting
@adrianbantegui: Please check out our videos on our channel which explains this really well for you. Much better than I can in such a limited space. Let us know how it goes for you.
Hey shotscience! I need help here. What is the best drill to get faster? I really really want to be have the allen-iverson-type speed although mine is pretty much average now. Btw, thanks for not just your videos but for answering all of my replies on a daily basis. You have helped me a whole lot thanks to your generosity.
@Rockflame: Hey Rock, one thing that we totally recommend is using the "Jump Rope." In our program we have our students use the rope as follows: Jump for one minute as fast as you can and count the number of reps. In the beginning you may only have around 80-90 reps. As your legs get stronger the number of reps will increase significantly, to maybe 120 -130. This really helps in improving
foot-speed, agility and strength. One of our former student-players could 180-190 reps. Do 10 sets
@ShotScience thx! too bad i don't know how to jump rope -.-". You will be amazed at how much I struggle. Still thanks for the info. I will trry my best in the drill
Should I try to cross some over when they are in front of me but I have about 7-10ft to the hoop. (My court is very small) Is it possible to seal when I'm that close or should I just create space and shoot. I find it very difficult to cross and seal when play one on one cause of litte amount of space and options.
@LoneStarxXx: Xx, the size of the court can be a problem. We like to have our students use more space to execute this move. Try to get to a bigger court.
Hi shot science, i have problem with driving because when i get to the paint defenders oftentimes steal the ball especially when they are three or two, even though i use the hammer.
@AAA2T: Well Three A, when you get into that area around the basket (the paint) with the ball the defense begins to collapse on you. We recommend that you execute a "jump stop" and this allows you to come under control and take care of the ball. It also allows for you to pivot away from the defense and kick the ball out. Don't try to overcome several bigs in the middle. They help you when you attackby collapsing. "KICK IT OUT!"
To those who have a problem with lay-ups: may I just say that the MIKAN DRILL is a good drill you can use to improve. It develops focus and the fingertips.
By the way, Any dribbling drills for the off hand? I need to improve my drive to the left, and dribbling the ball with my left hand is one of my weaknesses.
@MARKSMAN2318: We are working with YT to get up a vertical jump video, but there has been some snag and they haven't helped us figure what the problem is. Have patience!

Great series of basketball videos ! as well as interesting video production.
I'm wondering how the North/South aggressive first step can work in a 3 on 3 game where the defender will push or hold you on this move. In these kind of games it is very difficult to get past them for the layup.
Thus, I try to avoid the defender "hold/foul" by going more East / West to pull up for a J which is what you advise against. Does this mean I should just pass ?
getsmartpaul 11 months ago
@getsmartpaul: This is a great question. You might take a look at our video on "The Hammer" as a way of getting them off your hip on the attack.
Where you have un-officiated games you may have a problem with this attack, however, you are giving into there hand-checking tactics. Go get em and forget that East/West attack if you want to get to the rack. Remember, the drive attack is the "most difficult thing for players to defend if you attack aggressively."
ShotScience 11 months ago
you said to step north south what if the defender has a very wide stance or lang legs is it still go to go northeast or northwest
mr2fresh21 11 months ago
@mr2fresh21: Great question! When we speak of North and South attacks, we mean at an angle which may be more like northeast or northwest. The important thing here is to use the Long One-n-One and go Hip-tp-hip on your attack. If you do this, they have little else to do than bump you (foul) or open their stance and you blow by them. When you use the long step/dribble they have little time to react unless you loop around them, and then the may get the advantage.

Shot Science-
What should I do when I have a Shut-Down defender on me, and the paint is very crowded. I am a point guard. I am small, and I don't know what to do.
1992fireflame 1 year ago
@1992fireflame: You are the same player asking about the "floater and the Tear Drop shots." These are not the answer for your problem. Develop some moves that you can use to attack this "Sht Down" defender. No one should be able to do this to you if you have spent the time to develop your game. We have in our YT video library, many answers to your problem, but it will take you some time to develop these. "LETS GET GOING!"

@1992fireflame Call a big man for a screen and play some pick and roll ... call a big man for screen without the ball so u can get open and when u get the ball u can do alot of different things ...
lightsw0rd 1 year ago
@lightsw0rd: Different things??? Like what?
ShotScience 1 year ago
@ShotScience Moving without the ball I meant to get open it's not all about moving without the ball ... ( im basketball player not coach ) .. The point is that alot of people just stand on the courtand ask for ball ... but the moving without the ball is better so you can get open look and they will more time pass to him
lightsw0rd 1 year ago
@lightsw0rd: You are absolutely right on this one. The toughest players to guard are those who learn to move "WITHOUT THE BALL." It's an importan skill, especially since you might only touch the ball between 1-3 minutes per game.
ShotScience 1 year ago

Really check out the dialogue and video on this attack and you will find it very useful in your attacks on the rack.

sexykatie911 1 year ago
That's a foul? Don't expect it to be called all the time. Me as a referee wouldn't have called it. Contact was made by the offensive player (protecting himself). Defensive player stepped sidewards and back, not clearly good enough for a foul. If the offensive player didn't push/defend himself chances are the contact would've been on the chest of the defender, i.e. possibly a charge.
So too bad the example isn't a bit more clear on the foul. Good comment on keeping the dribble, tho.
cptfwiffo 1 year ago
@cptfwiffo: If you check the rules, the defensive player must occupy a stationary position in front of the offensive player on contact. If not, the foul is on the defender. It can always be called a foul by some officials, however, it would never be a charge because of position. This move forces the defender into contact or to open up their hips leading to the opening to the rack. Thanks, however, for your comment.
ShotScience 1 year ago
Also, whenever I tell myself that I will attack the basket, once a defender gets in my way, I get rattled and I tend to shoot or pass. I really want to take it hard to the basket without getting stripped or blocked. But my fear seems to prevent me from doing this. How do I conquer this fear? Is this because of inexperience? Because if it is, I guess my only solution is to play a lot more. But some advice won't hurt, right? Just to speed up my improvement. I usually play the no. 2 position.
MARKSMAN2318 1 year ago
@MARKSMAN2318: Well, most players feel they cannot get by the defender so they resort to giving up the ball. If you work on this technique and are ready to "receive the contact" and continue to the hoop you will probably be successful. It, truly is a matter of little confidence. We recommend that you take a chance with the possibility that you will fail at first, but you will eventually succeed. Keep working on it and don't be afraid to fail at first. Let us know how it is going.
ShotScience 1 year ago
I have seen all your vids, but I can't seem to apply them properly. I feel that I can't get the fear of being stripped or blocked out of my head. Sometimes, I even get confused whether to shoot, drive or pass. "Triple threat", right? My problem is I can't seem to decide what to do when I have the ball. Is there any advice you can give for me to stay calm and do the right thing before I make a move?
MARKSMAN2318 1 year ago
@MARKSMAN2318: Play a lot more and don't be afraid to fail in the beginning. Most everything we learn in sports is about "Failure at first, then we begin to succeed." Remember when you were trying to learn to ride a bike? or Ski, snow board, or many other things? First we fail, then we begin to get it, after that, our successes out number the failures. Just keep working and success will eventually will come your way.

hey coaches does this attack need to be always started with a triple threat position?and coaches to be able to do this attack, all you have to do is you should make sure that when you drive you make your hip close to your defender's hip?
defygreatness 1 year ago
@defygreatness: Get hip to hip and make the "long-one-One" attack to force them to rotate their hips or foul you.
ShotScience 1 year ago
@ShotScience coaches, you mean that the hip to hip attack is literally going hip to hip with your defender when you use long one and one?
defygreatness 1 year ago
@defygreatness: Absolutely!!! You should be ready for his contact as you go hip-to-hip using the long one-n-one attack as this does not allow him time to get in front of you. He will often pivot to avoid you and you are off to the races! If there is contact on the hip-to-hip it will be his and should result in a foul. If we attack using looping footwork we allow him time to stay in front of us.

Rockflame 1 year ago
@Rockflame: Hey Rock, one thing that we totally recommend is using the "Jump Rope." In our program we have our students use the rope as follows: Jump for one minute as fast as you can and count the number of reps. In the beginning you may only have around 80-90 reps. As your legs get stronger the number of reps will increase significantly, to maybe 120 -130. This really helps in improving
foot-speed, agility and strength. One of our former student-players could 180-190 reps. Do 10 sets

Should I try to cross some over when they are in front of me but I have about 7-10ft to the hoop. (My court is very small) Is it possible to seal when I'm that close or should I just create space and shoot. I find it very difficult to cross and seal when play one on one cause of litte amount of space and options.
LoneStarxXx 1 year ago
@LoneStarxXx: Xx, the size of the court can be a problem. We like to have our students use more space to execute this move. Try to get to a bigger court.

Hi shot science, i have problem with driving because when i get to the paint defenders oftentimes steal the ball especially when they are three or two, even though i use the hammer.
AAA2T 1 year ago
@AAA2T: Well Three A, when you get into that area around the basket (the paint) with the ball the defense begins to collapse on you. We recommend that you execute a "jump stop" and this allows you to come under control and take care of the ball. It also allows for you to pivot away from the defense and kick the ball out. Don't try to overcome several bigs in the middle. They help you when you attackby collapsing. "KICK IT OUT!"
