I heard it once said 'Our mortal forms are but shadows of a purer reality' Certainly true in Dustys case, she was an angel amongst us,great singer & so beautiful.R.I.P Dusty, give anything to bring you back!
A hauntingly beautiful song , given the soulful treatment by one of the best singers of our time. We miss singers of your class, Dusty. That's a fact!!
I must admit some confusion about the lyrics of this song, and exactly what Randy Newman was trying to communicate. But it's a hauntingly beautiful melody, and Dusty perform it magnificently. What do you think the lyrics are all about?
The song is about being insulted by homeless people you've just helped. It is *achingly* beautiful but it's not sweet. Dusty missed that entirely, alas.
Never trust Newman's gorgeous melodies. He's a sneaky fellow.
Let me offer this opinion: the song is not so much "very, very dark" as sad, bitter, and bittersweet; it is more universal than just "how we all treat the homeless." Nicely sung by Dusty, but listen to Randy Newman singing it--heartbreaking.
Yeah, just because the original intention was to be about the homeless doesn't mean that the song can't transcend to resonate with greater aspects of the human condition. That happens to all great art.
While that's certainly true, and I don't want to dismiss the song--it is truly a great work of art by a master--Dusty's version strips away all its nuance and makes it a slightly sticky, if well sung, ballad. Which it isn't. Part of the punch is it can be read that way. That's part of the brilliance of the song. It's a black as night jape, it is as Strassian mentioned deeply sad on other levels, etc. Making it a torchy call for human kindness is to fundmentally miss the point AND strength.
Piffle if you'd like. She should have covered a song she understood instead of ignoring the lyrics of this one (which she changed). She's a great singer...who shouldn't have touched this song.
What makes you think she didn't understand the song? The line about 'human kindness overflowing' is in the original lyrics - her delivery of this and 'that's the way to treat a friend' are knowingly ironic. (Watch her expressive hand movement on the latter.) This was a song she fell in love with from a demo-disc by Randy Newman himself and felt closest to personally. Her interpretation is bittersweet and subtly poised. You should give her more credit for being an intelligent artist.
Firstly, I love this song and her version of it!!! For YOU Dusty I wish so very much I had known your music better before you sadly passed. You, like so many of my favorite female performers are and were one of a kind!!! Thank You
Dear Dusty touched by so much talent, and yet seemed to have had so much sadness in her heart. I miss her. She is the best female singer in the world then and now!

I love this arrangement of the song. The arranger changes the chords around slightly.
I think Dusty was intelligent enough to understand the song. She felt every song that she chose to sing.
I'm not very bright, but even I get the irony.(Duhhh)

I think the lyrics are free association - reflections, mood, and emotions - a state of mind and feeling.

I'll be awful. You do realize this song is an ironic commentary on how we all treat the homeless, right?
If not: it is.
It's a very, very dark song, not uplifting one tiny bit.

She should have covered a song she understood. This is NOT a song about human kindness. Anything but.
