  • stevefromPA2: The Community Update PSAs were backed by Chuck Mangione's "Chase the Clouds Away". There's a great studio version of it here on youtube.

  • do u have channel 29 community events promo it talked about current events in philly with some great sax jazz in the background...

  • What is name of that song in the background?

  • Taft was the owner of animation powerhouse Hanna-Barbera from 1967 to 1987 and is now in the hands of Time Warner.

  • Look so different without the liberty place. But yet again I was too young to notice it

  • I missed this station for years. When TNT(Turner Network Television was launched on October 1,1988,we lost WTAF(WTXF then) from our cable channel line-up.

  • yo Techner, do you happen to have that 30 minute spot that use to appear on Fox 29 between 3 to 5 am? It looks EXACTLY like this one but with more locations and it was a lot longer. (some of the shots include pigeons on the streets of center city, mightve been old city and that huge water fountain that the kids played in).

I use to wake up early in the morning as a 6 year old to see what was on and this spot along with feed the children drove me nuts.

  • btw, it was around 1988 to 1992?

  • Hey Parkerlewisrocks, that segment that you're talking about was called "The Fox 29 Community Update". I've been looking for that myself, no one seems to have it.

  • City Hall was the tallest tower

in 1986-87 till One Liberty Place

    stepped in. Cool!!

  • Say, TechnerVideo: Do you remember TV-29's sign-off from around 1979-82? It featured a snowy region (which I learned later was Asbury Park, New Jersey) during a sunset, and the Beatles' song, "Good Night" was played in the film. Would love to see that sign-off again.

  • This video of yours is... GREAT!!!

  • OMG, Don't know what possesed me to do a search for WTAF 29. The voice over your hear on this sing off, was my dad. Robert Barett. He passed away July 96', Thank you TechnerVideo for adding this!!!

  • Yours is the best comment I ever had for one of my videos! I am glad I could help.

  • You've got a pretty cool dad. I've admired announcers like him for a very long time.

  • WTAF Became WTXF before Fox Owned and Operated

  • That was around 1987, I believe.

I've seen the studio where WTXF is located - if you stand on the corner of 5th and Market Streets facing east toward 4th and Market, you can see the building with the word "FOX" on the top of it. I interned at KYW's 5th and Market studio in 2005 (Which is now relocated). I talked to someone who works for KYW 1060 on the phone at my current job over the summer, & I asked him where they moved - I think he said near FOX.

    MEMORIES! Thanx 4 posting this!

  • WT(A/X)F is one of many former Taft stations to be later owned by either TVX (or its successors Paramount Stations Group, Viacom Television Stations Group, and CBS Television Stations Group) or FOX (in WTXF's case, it was owned by TVX, Paramount, and FOX).

At the turn of the new millennium, Viacom still owned four former Taft TV stations: WFOR/Miami (formerly WCIX, acquired by Viacom through its merger with CBS), WDCA/Washington DC, KTXH/Houston, and KTXA/Metroplex.

  • Meanwhile, WTXF was one of several former Taft stations owned by FOX. It was joined by: KSAZ/Phoenix, WDAF/Kansas City, WBRC/Birmingham, and WGHP/Pidemont Triad.

Viacom traded KTXH and WDCA (both of which coincidentally broadcast on channel 20) to FOX in 2001, in exchange for KBHK/Bay Area (bought by FOX when they acquired Chris-Craft's stations).

In 2007, FOX sold 8 O&Os to Local TV. WBRC, WGHP, and WDAF were among the stations sold.

  • WBRC was later swapped to Raycom Media in exchange for WTVR in Richmond, after Raycom bought WWBT in that market.

  • And also owned Quinn Martin "QM" Productions, B.T.W.

  • Brings back old memories of the Delaware Valley.

  • this is cool! dont know why im so obsessed with this type of stuff though. but if anyone can up the wtaf sign-on with the community update, that would be cool. i just remember thinking to myself the last time i saw it was...."why are they still using this old footage??"

  • Does WTAF-TV owned by Taft Broadcasting, the same company that owned at the time Hanna-Barbera, Worldvision and other Taft properties?

  • Wow, Look at that, the old skyline. No One Liberty, Mellon Bank. Etc Etc

  • Techner, I'm a native of Philadelphia. In the late 70s and early 80s TV 29 did a sign off that made a very special impression on me as a kid. They did a sign off to a Beatles song "Good Night"? Another was one of 1970s Philadelphia locale shots. I LOVED THEM BOTH. Do you have? If so please post! PLeASE
