If you're concerned about the environment, the government is a much larger hindrance than corporations, who, at least when dealing with their own land, have an incentive to clean up after themselves. What incentive does a bureaucrat have to make a good decision? They're largely uninvolved and make the same money regardless of what they do. On the other hand, an executive at Loblaws, the largest Canadian food distributor, is motivated to make good business decisions by the fact that if he makes bad decisions, his company will suffer.

So, if they want to make more money, then they have to make sure that they don't do things that we don't like. This is what people are talking about when they speak of the profit motive, which is something that's completely absent in all areas of government, including these social services funded one hundred percent by our tax dollars.

Big companies have taken jobs out of the country. Capital means Profit (period) there is no obligation to anything with their profit. We have been 'hosed" by corporations, they lobby & buy congress and screw workers / labor over looking all the while for more profit. The whole capitalist economy is in the tank now. @zebra334 At the end of each fiscal year, corporations have to report profits to their shareholders, and if they're not making enough profits then their shareholders will decide that their stocks in that particular corporation have proven to be a bad investment, and will subsequently sell their shares to invest in another company. When profits dwindle significantly, businesses can't afford to sustain themselves, and henceforth they collapse.

@zebra334 Asking people in Caracas doesn't really determine anything. A dictator is a leader who has no limit to his power, and being elected democratically has no bearing on that (you didn't mention this specifically, but I hear it repeated over and over whenever this topic is addressed).
Again, results matter more than intentions. I wouldn't care if every single corporate leader had no regard for us at all beyond serving as the means to their multi-million dollar salaries. That's what works.

@zebra334 The motivation has nothing to do with: for-profit corporations actually succeed at delivering goods and services to the people, while the collective administration you speak of does not. Socialism refers to the doctrine that the individual should be enslaved by his society because the government not only owns, but has the right to own, all areas of the economy, and that includes both the labour of its people and anything they produce.

Corporations exist to deliver goods and services to the common man, and the difference between the costs of delivering them, and the prices that we pay for them, are recorded as profits. If you're concerned about the environment, the government is a much larger hindrance than corporations, who, at least when dealing with their own land, have an incentive to clean up after themselves. A lot of environmental disasters have been committed by governments, because environmental problems have no real negative effect on the bureaucrats that are commissioned with preventing these problems to begin with.

@zebra334 The reason for the recent economic downturn is government intervention removing risk from the economy, which is a problem because one of the most crucial components of a capitalist system is the ability to fail. Businesses have no obligation to make good decisions if they know that they don't have to pay the price if they make a mistake, which is why people were concerned about these multi-billion dollar government bailouts.

@zebra334 Well, in most cases, it has involved armed combat. I'd trust a corporation with my life before I'd trust it with my government. What incentive does a bureaucrat have to make a good decision? They're largely uninvolved and make the same money regardless of what they do. On the other hand, an executive at Loblaws, the largest Canadian food distributor, is motivated to make good business decisions by the fact that if he makes bad decisions, his company will suffer.

So, if they want to make more money, then they have to make sure that they don't do things that we don't like. This is what people are talking about when they speak of the profit motive, which is something that's completely absent in all areas of government, including these social services funded one hundred percent by our tax dollars.

I'm sorry to flood you with comments, but you mentioned two conflicting ideas here: that capitalism only benefits the wealthy, and that I'm defending it out of self-interest. I'm certainly not wealthy, and throughout most of my life I was living in the lowest income bracket. I defend free enterprise because it's the mechanism that allows corporate interests to work in favour of the poor.

@zebra334 The highest earners in America got to where they are by providing goods and services to as many people as possible, meaning their presence in the economy benefits the common man as it's in their business's best interests to lower costs, and with lower costs comes a lower requirement for profit margins, which leads to lower prices, which leads to a lower cost of living for the poor.

Big companies have taken jobs out of the country. Capital means Profit (period) there is no obligation to anything with their profit. @zebra334 At the end of each fiscal year, corporations have to report profits to their shareholders, and if they're not making enough profits then their shareholders will decide that their stocks in that particular corporation have proven to be a bad investment, and will subsequently sell their shares to invest in another company. When profits dwindle significantly, businesses can't afford to sustain themselves, and henceforth they collapse.

Humans are competitive beings by nature, and it is that competitive nature that keeps our economy moving forward. Like I said, it doesn't matter if the system "cares about" the people, all that matters is that it always works in their favour. Intentions are irrelevant if you don't have results.

The mistake you're making is in judging each system by the intentions of its advocates. Mainstream corporations could openly admit that they don't care about the common man and have no regard for human life but as a means to profit, and it'd still be better than socialism.

This means that the actions of CEOs who do, ah, "whatever it takes to make profit," is the deciding factor of whether or not thousands of people will receive a paycheck at the end of each month.
Being greedy is a liberal code-word that roughly translates to "having a competitive mindset." If we didn't have competition, there would be no economy. Stop condemning greed!

@CambridgeHeights The percentage of climatologists who accept it is completely irrelevant. I'd further question the concept itself, but I'm guessing you aren't a climatologist. Surely you can recall a point in history where the majority of people, even as overwhelming a majority as ninety five percent, accepted something that wasn't true. The changing climate is a fact, but there are still thousands of scientists who question whether humans are causing it.

I'll also add that I don't know if man-made climate change is true or false, and that I instead regard it as an idea not yet verified. There are mixed opinions among scientists, so naturally I'm reluctant to allow these left-wing ideologues to reshape our entire economy with tonnes of new regulation, cap&trade, etc., when we're not even sure that doing so will prevent anything.

@4gl2u There are qualified scientists who are skeptical of anthropomorphic climate change, but they are a small minority of scientists. I am not a climatologist who studies climate change 40-60 hours a week for years and years. The logical choice for me would be to side with the majority, unless I believe there's some giant global conspiracy, which is beyond absurd.
As for policy decisions, I think we should play it safe and assume that maybe the 95% of climate experts are right on this one.

Man-made climate change is merely what the majority of climatologists infer when analyzing their data. It's not an established fact, it doesn't provide conclusive proof, and these experts discourage skepticism because it stifles their leftist ultimatum.
