Was living in New Zealand in the mid 70's. J J Cale played the 3 main cities and then did a one off concert in the sports shed in our tiny little beach town (Mt Maunganui). We thought we were the coolest people on earth that night, and when I hear his music, I still do.
gr8 song! years of listening to jj cale - reminds me of driving around the states headed for some place I've never been before. JJ Cale always made it better. Thx 4 posting. Totally dig the cover of this albumn. Crazy mama is an exceptional piece even with it's simplicity. Awesome! peace
Love this tune and the guitar work on it. Sounds like outright ganja ingesting music LOL. For some reason or other, when I first heard the tune, I had this mental image of rednecks in some kind of redneck scene (a-la- Smokey & the Bandit) madly sucking on their roaches and filling the room with secondhand smoke :). But now I've acclimatized to just thinking of it as a cool tune. Still think of the roach angle every now and then, though lmao.
People don't realize the sheer genious J.J had! So many of his songs were covered by Huge stars who made them Huge hits ,but it was J.J who penned the gems!
Isn't that the best album cover ever! Don't know about sittin back with a bong, but I do enjoy his music. My older brother had this album and I loved that cover and his cool music. I found me a copy a few years ago and still enjoy his music. "River runs deep and the water is cold as ice" is one wicked song!!
I see where this is going, for me its a sittin in my recliner chair, with sum good buds/ hash, a smaller bong 16-18" and a nice warm temperature cruising the tv on mute :)
@MrGeltabs Back in the dat my girl and I went to the state park on the beach in Beaufort S.C. and shroomed all day and this cd Never left the player!!
I'm falling in love with this man's music! First heard about him on a radio show on public radio here in Oklahoma. Check this page out on facebook. 99171981609
This album is the one you have when you only can choose one. Every song a classic in every sense of the word. I can't count how much money I have won over the years wagering that Lynard Skynard didn't write "Call me the breeze". What a great album that never seems to age, just gets better over time.
i recall hearing this song on a juke box in New Castle Indiana in 71,maybe 72 recognizing it was way better than the other single,Handbags & Gladrags by Rod Stewart.....that was playing at the time....
true. truest. well put justaintthatway. nice wording. couldn't even figure out what else to say besides you said it. if it aint the best way to put it, then i haven't ever seen a more perfect way to say anything ever.
Ma father bought this album as when it was released in 1971. I danced to this song with my mother and sister when I was six years old. (Good memories). To this day the music of JJ Cale ranks in the top five of my most played.
nuff said. outstanding and that slide is killer. I think it's rigged to a wah wah.....man, how this guy can write this kind of music play this guitar this well and still put together bands with slide guitarists like this....
well one the greats.
the other one that kill me is Call the Doctor,...on this LP
@1Delta - Mac Gayden played the slide part. He got upset when they wouldn't let him do a second take. I think he's ok with it now... ;-) ... it pretty much makes the song.
@DougHendrix thanx man, for the info. I originally JJ Cale was playing the lead on slide, but thanx to YouTube I've learned different.
I totally agree, the slide lead and ofcourse Cale's voice and potent lyrics keep me listening to this over and over. Sounds like the slide is running through a wah wah pedal too. Is this right.
I'm not sure anything can sound sweeter than that slide with a wah wah. the phrasing is off the charts.
I've got a good friend who I am dying to play his slide!
I remember this well. My mom still has the album. This was played many times through my youth along with Bob Dylan, Moody Blues, Doug Kershaw, Joe Cocker and to many more to mention. I was 7 when this came out. My 5 yr old started calling me crazy mama this past week and this tune popped in my head. I had to youtube it for my 5 and 11 yr old. Thanks for posting it!!
one of the greatest mellow blues ballads ever. Eric Clapton try as he might could not touch this. although I love Clapton, this little enigmatic guitar riff Cale does is phenomenal. the words are as good as Dylan etc.
this is the Old Testament man,...
and the beautiful thing about the lyrics is every god damn one of them is true.
wow, carl radle took time away from Layla to record this with J.J! the piano coda was recorded only three days after this track was created! the famous electric masterpiece was recorded about two weeks before this.
