When they were casting, Rob Reiner was dating Penny Marshall at the time, so alot figured that she would be a shoe in for the role of Gloria but it was given to Sally instead.and she ofcourse went onto to her own tv fame playing Laverne in Happy Days then Laverne and Shirley
There have been many TV shows of outstanding & excellent quality over the years (though it seems there are very few made today). In any event, I think "All in the Family" is a candidate for The Greatest TV Show in History. The show take place @ a very turbulent time in American ('Nam, Nixon, Racism, etc). While touching on the most serious issues of the day, it was able to do so in a very entertaining way. Due to political correctness run amok, this show would/could never be made today.
>>@Charlie19642018 - As far as I am concerned, this episode, the last episode of the 9th season, was the LAST episode PERIOD!!! In my happy little world, Edith does not die, and Edith and Archie are still living happily at 704 Hauser Street. Maybe even Meathead and Gloria moved back in to help them out in thier golden years.<<
Young Dr. Shapiro diagnoses Edith with phlebitis Archie calls Dr. Shapiro, clueless as to why Edith broke down . The doctor arrives furious that Archie would make Edith do work when she was told to rest. Archie is confused as to why Dr. Shapiro is angry, Dr. Shapiro suddenly realizes that Edith didn't tell Archie He tells Archie about Edith's condition and leaves Archie's stunned! Edith speaks the final line in the episode Edith dies at age 52
One of the best sitcoms ever..just wasn't the same when Mike and Gloria left.... this ending to me is the true ending of Archie and Edith.. it's a beautiful moment in time.
They just don't make shows like this any more. This show was real life, with all of its good and bad. Archie and Edith are irreplaceable, and it's too sad that many people miss out on this show because it's not "politically correct." It may not be "politically correct" at times, but it shows life for what it is, sometimes good and sometimes bad, with a lot of B.S. "All In the Family" will always be a gem.
So true. I may be young but I like retro stuff including film & TV and have seen all these episodes. It was a little biased on the lefty side, with some ideological bullshit, but still--it wasn't the politically correct sterile crap on TV today. Plus there was real acting in this show unlike the crap the douche "stars" get paid insane amounts of money for reading cue cards today. The chemistry & timing between Edith & Archie was impeccable. This moment was so real I admit I choked up a bit.
@pnull ....because this is something that Archie used to say to Edith often, when he was exasperated with her... "You're a pip... a real PIP!" And now she's turning it around on him a little...
I don`t know if this is a fact but Every time i watch the simpsons I have a big big feeling it was inspired by this show. Homer's Wife sounds like Edith, Archie`s statements sometimes are pretty much the same as Homer
Absolute classic. I love this episode, but then I cherish All in the Family as my favorite TV show of all time. Nothing makes me laugh or cry as much as the majic that Carroll O'Connor and Jean Stapleton created on this show.
Okay, so this was the last episode? When did they say that Edith passed on in her sleep? I didn't catch that at all. Please help to help me continue my cry.
@buzsub03 this is the last episode of all in the family. for whatever reason they decided to end this show and the next season started a new show called archie bunker's place. the character of edith is only in a few of the first season archie bunker's place episodes, and eventually the woman playing edith leaves the show. edith is written out as saying she died of a stroke.
@buzsub03 They never had an episode when Edith actually dies. The first mention that Edith had passed was in the first episode of the second season of Archie Bunker's Place.
@Charlie19642018 - As far as I am concerned, this episode, the last episode of the 9th season, was the LAST episode PERIOD!!! In my happy little world, Edith does not die, and Edith and Archie are still living happily at 704 Hauser Street. Maybe even Meathead and Gloria moved back in to help them out in thier golden years.
@KLUNKET True, Edith does not die at the end of All In The Family's run in mid 1979. The show morphed into Archie Bunker's Place in Sept.1979 and Jean Stapleton decided to leave after only a handful of episodes. The writers decided to kill off Edith (most likely because she was irreplaceable) and Edith was said to have died of a stroke.
@KLUNKET Shit, buddy - Archie & Edith began & ended All in the Family in their golden years! To hell with whiny Gloria and slouching, Mullet Mike! There IS no other couple but Archie & Edith...& yes, I agree: 704 Hauser Street is the perma-home of the Bunkers, that grubby chair, & house-frocks for all occasions!. :) :)
@KLUNKET yeah and maybe Joey went to college, got married..maybe lived in the jefferson house .well thats provided the time line would fit ..would it fit? or would he be younger then that? maybe a mid teen? oh no wait, Polly and her hubby that was in law enforcement lived there at that time. i forgot about that . and then Maybe Stephanie was married, her own family in another house, maybe close by.lol lawd. my retired self needs to find something to do besides this lol
@KLUNKET Oh yeah, and remember the xmas episode when archie, edith. stephanie flew to cali, they found that Meathead and Gloria were seperated b/c of his being so busy being a college professor, she found a boytoy.then there was the episode when Gloria and Joey went back to New York, Meathead stayed n Cali
This show was way ahead of it time for the time period it was aired. The topics the launguage.. all of it. However, it was also when TV was worth watching. This show changed many peoples views on many things!
God how i miss these shows and the time we used to live in - i lost my mom Jerri in June 07 and she adored this show so much. My God how i miss her. I would give anything to go back in time and have her for just 1 more day. Every time i see this show i feel so close to her. I just cant believe that she is gone.
Even though I didn't really watch this alot, this was the only show that improved with every season. And when it was still an issue of racism heavily doing that time, Archie Bunker kept it real and said things that made us really think. RIP Carrol O' Connor, the TV world has not forgotten your accomplishments or your acting. But it forgotten how you kept it real within the line of Race.
Although we saw Edith five more times after this, this was really the end of the classic period of the show. Once she died it was never the same. Just good instead of great.
dude tv has evolved, there are better shows than this...not to say that this show sucks. by no means. This is one of the best shows to this day, but its not the best...and I wouldn't compare it to The Office. thats kind of an insult to this show.

@peanutbuttercrunc100 Actually, the quality of today's shit is just shittier than it use to be, thanks to the secular progressive, bottom-feeding, scum-sucking, morally reprobate degenerates that run HollyWood.
@peanutbuttercrunc100 I think television has devolved in the past twenty years. Sure there were bad shows back in the day, but there are more bad shows than good ones now. One positive of today though is that we have more channels to watch.
This just tears my heart out. The whole series should have ended right there. No Archie Bunker's Place, no Edith dying...Just a simple end to this incredible show.
@BobChippewa Hi! I sort of lost touch for awhile with AITF while relocating. Do you know if there was an episode that addresses Edith's death? I've been looking all over the Internet and can't find anything. Can you steer me in the right direction? Thanks.
i always loved the part when she hit the high note and the laugh track came on..lol..these shows, were very politically and socially perfect! I really loved her as a television mom/wife! and this moment is one of television series best moments..one of many.
@RaceIsOpen "All in the Family was the first major American series to be videotaped in front of a live studio audience." according to wikipedia. I don't think they had a laugh track for this show.
@shakysyxx I don't remember the whole episode. I saw the end of it on here somewhere. It was so sad it makes me cry. I wish I could find the whole episode somewhere
@xmelax37 The video is here. I just finished watching it all. On here it's listed as this- Archie Bunker's Place: "The Death of Edith" 1/6. Hope that helps.
I love, love, love this show. I'm 25 and I watch this everyday at 6:00pm. As the series progresses Archies softens up. If you don't think so, watch the first episode and then watch this one.
I'm 15 years old, and my parents starting watching this on TV. Never thought I'd get so into a show like this from way back then, but I really have. I love All in the Family, one of the best shows I've ever seen. I wish I was around when it came out :|
@mmungin100 he did appreciate her tho!there were times when he did such sweet things for her! He just had a rough outer shell lol. I think thats what makes them so amusing...they are always yelling and fighting but they love each other ;)
I love the both of them, Archie may have been a pain in the ass at times but he loved her so much and you could always tell, Edith knew that and knew everybody had good in them thats why i loved her so much as well :)
For years I thought Edith died in this episode (series finale), but that didn't happen until the season 2 premeire of its spinoff Archie Bunker's Place. It looks like she could've died here.
This made me cry. So heart rending, and so brilliantly acted out by two of those most talented, convincing actors in any TV show ... ever!
Those of us who've watch this all our lives -- original episodes as kids in the 1970's or now in syndication, found out quickly that Archie is all grumble, gripe and growl -- don't let him kid ya. He's a big teddy bear!
You are so correct. I started watching this show and many others shows from the 1970's when I was 14 in 1985. TV is just not the same any more for sure.
@storrs19 You are so right. While some shows today are pretty good, I would not want to watch reruns of them. I could watch shows from the 60 through the 80s over and over and never tire of them.
In my mind, these moments are the last we see of Archie and Edith. I never think of Archie Bunker's Place or Gloria's show. In my mind, they all lived happily ever after.
@ameroux All I can say is... like life, the happy ending isn't always the ending. Yes, the show should have ended right here. But they had to drag it out for four more seasons, eventually ending it abruptly without a proper conclusion.
@ameroux- Your right. I think that Norman Lears decision to kill off Edith so the Archies Place series could go on was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made regarding this show. People loved these characters so much and it still shows to this day. They should have ended this show right here with this episode. As far as I am concerned, Archie and Edith are living out thier golden years still today, maybe Gloria Meathead moved back in to help out! Who knows!
@MrOldtimeCountry Norman Lear did not kill off edith. Jean left the show and norman started looking for a replacement when he realized, how do you replace edith? You can"t so he did'nt.
@gasman396 - that may have been what happened, but none-the-less, Edith died on the show, and in my opinion, if she didn't want to do the show anymore, then there should have been no more show. Archie without Edith is like a light bulb without electricity- need them both to work!
I don't think Archie was a bigot. I think he was a xenophobe. That's a person afraid of things he doesn't understand. I also think his character had an underlying sadness of his lot in life so it made him kind of snob to his surroundings. I always liked the character of Archie, regardless of his shortcomings. The whole cast worked remarkably well together. I don't think that kind of chemistry had been on a show since I love Lucy.
Thanks for posting this. I was just thinking about the show, and this episode in particular. It still brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes.
Who is the idiot that disliked this clip... youtube should be able to electrocute people through their keyboards for stupidity.

I wish I was around when it came out :|

he never appreciated Edith. Edith was such a wonderful person on this show.
mmungin100 1 year ago
@mmungin100 he did appreciate her tho!there were times when he did such sweet things for her! He just had a rough outer shell lol. I think thats what makes them so amusing...they are always yelling and fighting but they love each other ;)
24fans4life 1 year ago
@mmungin100 He appreciated her in his own way,Archie isn't one to show emotions so we rarely see glimpses of when he appreciates her.

This is my favorite scen with them. It is soooooooo heart warming and plus they acted the hell out of it amazing actors!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE THIS SHOW! they just don't have shows like this anymore :( with a character like Archie!(BTW I'm 15)
xxsweetcandiesxx 1 year ago 2
You are so correct. I started watching this show and many others shows from the 1970's when I was 14 in 1985. TV is just not the same any more for sure.

@storrs19 Wow your so lucky you were around those times!! :)
xxsweetcandiesxx 1 year ago
@storrs19 You are so right. While some shows today are pretty good, I would not want to watch reruns of them. I could watch shows from the 60 through the 80s over and over and never tire of them.

In my mind, these moments are the last we see of Archie and Edith. I never think of Archie Bunker's Place or Gloria's show. In my mind, they all lived happily ever after.
ameroux 2 years ago 50
what is the name of glorias show?
bryan0102 1 year ago
It was just called "Gloria".
ameroux 1 year ago
@bryan0102 "Gloria", surprisingly enough...
StephanieLives 1 year ago
@ameroux All I can say is... like life, the happy ending isn't always the ending. Yes, the show should have ended right here. But they had to drag it out for four more seasons, eventually ending it abruptly without a proper conclusion.
StephanieLives 1 year ago
@ameroux- Your right. I think that Norman Lears decision to kill off Edith so the Archies Place series could go on was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made regarding this show. People loved these characters so much and it still shows to this day. They should have ended this show right here with this episode. As far as I am concerned, Archie and Edith are living out thier golden years still today, maybe Gloria Meathead moved back in to help out! Who knows!
MrOldtimeCountry 1 year ago 3
@MrOldtimeCountry Norman Lear did not kill off edith. Jean left the show and norman started looking for a replacement when he realized, how do you replace edith? You can"t so he did'nt.
gasman396 1 year ago
@gasman396 - that may have been what happened, but none-the-less, Edith died on the show, and in my opinion, if she didn't want to do the show anymore, then there should have been no more show. Archie without Edith is like a light bulb without electricity- need them both to work!
MrOldtimeCountry 1 year ago 2
They only killed her off because the actress left the show.
SamSklar77 2 years ago 2
I don't think Archie was a bigot. I think he was a xenophobe. That's a person afraid of things he doesn't understand. I also think his character had an underlying sadness of his lot in life so it made him kind of snob to his surroundings. I always liked the character of Archie, regardless of his shortcomings. The whole cast worked remarkably well together. I don't think that kind of chemistry had been on a show since I love Lucy.
SkankExpose 2 years ago 10
I agree,, ,,, he was never out to hurt anyone,, just to protect Himself! LoL theres a lot of poeple in society that way,,,,,,
Dreambro1 1 year ago
Caroll O'Connor created Archie Bunker to
attack that mindset and social bigotry in
America. He also wanted to show the all too human side of him.Norman Lear
was constantly arguing with O'Connor
because he wanted to push the show's envelope even father than they did.
