Doom is kind of the opposite of Magneto. Magneto's a good guy, as he just wants to see his kind be safe. But for all his honor and scruples, he's a terrorist whose efforts do more to stymie mutant rights than improve them.

Doom, on the other hand, is a genuinely terrible person - petty, spiteful, egotistical, impulsive, merciless, cruel, and a bit nuts, but all these traits kind of meet at the middle, and produce someone that it's hard not to root for. Pride meets hate to produce nobility.

Perfection is not obtainable without some discord and destruction spread a little here and there to him. Why, in an old show, when Victor was put on a different planet with other villains even, he separated his people from them and made a Utopia. (Old Spiderman episode.)
