In Medieval England, Minstrels would travel from village to village to entertain and to spread news from the outside world. This great video has captured the very essence of that era. Annie has made a remarkable journey from Aberdeen to the rest of the World, not only to bring us joy from the distant Past, but also to make us aware of the fragile Future we are facing.
In the distant past, in the Shires of England, Minstrels would travel from village to village and entertain the population at their markets. This great video has captured all the wonderful nostangia of that era.
Very dark... The perfect song for her to make a comeback with. I still reckon she could do a cover of Sweet Dreams, only cos I found the old one annoying, in a way... I guess back then she sang with less emotion, and now it's all about power and everything. Maybe I'll cover sweet dreams when I get my music studio online again :)
Goodness, I really was not waiting for yet another x-mas album but boy Ms. Lennox created a MASTERPIECE here. She took the meaning of these beautiful words to a whole different level. She invites us to experience this song not just to listen. An Angel has send a message. Love you Ms. Lennox.
I found out what the clip reminds me of: A consens between "Kate Bush - The sensual world" (watch?v=AJc64xncBt4&feature=related) and the wonderful russian 80ies fantasy movie "A fairytale quest" (Сказка Странствий) (watch?v=7TKbe99UkB4)
Now this one completely flabbergasted me as an loyal follower of medieval, 80ies and wave-gothic fan and even though I define myselve as a pagan! Today Germany was buried by a blizzard under a blanket of snow and this jewel (addicting song with her best vocal performance since EuR as well as the wonderful clip) fits perfectly and magically to this winter-mood. Brilliant, no genious I say! I raise my stein of ginger-mead to thee, Maiden Annie!
An obvious example for Annie’s intention to remind us about the historic origins of our Christmas tradition is the boy who finds a Christmas tree ball amidst several apples, clearly demonstrating that this well known Christmas tree accessory originated from apples, which in former times were used to decorate the Christmas trees, alongside with e.g. nuts and gingerbread.
Annies Interpretation of this traditional carol as well as this video are just stunning great!
The message of this video is more than crystal clear, Annie shows us the origins of our Christmas traditions, which just can’t be “pure Christian”, as Christianity has like everything else a history of development. A good deal of the huge success of Christanization is due to the fact that pagan traditions were adopted and step by step attributed as well as modified with Christian symbolism.

"It kind of brings you into almost a mythical kingdom,"
"My references were to go back to Victorian times, which is a source of the way we celebrate Christmas now, with the cards, the Christmas tree and the presents. But I was also conscious about the Pagan idea, about marking the time of the end of the year. The trees go bare, we have the dark nights and the solstice."

@ziggytrick Hey guess what... I am a christian and I love this song. And please don't call us "religious nutters", it is very rude. How would you like it if I started calling you a "atheist nutter"? I'm guessing that if you saw that you would be thinking something like "man typical christian, such a jerk. And man he is so closed minded for not even excepting the song." Sorry but no. You are being closed minded for calling Christians "nutters". Everyone! Look up the lyrics, they are about Jes
@AndrewsLifeBlurbs Hey dude...chill. The comment was aimed at the many fanatical zelots out there who spout spurious utterings in the name of various religions without reasonable consideration. (a worldwide trait not exclusive to religious people may I add)
Anyway...we agree the song is great. Cheers to that! (may our souls be protected from whatever may be contained in a Christian song sung by a non-believer.)
@ziggytrick Bravo, I applaud your comment. The religious ilk are so obsessed with the other side it brings to mind certain closeted homophobes. me thinks the same sorta shite stinks with them church dumbbells.
I love the fact that people are saying the lyrics are appalling and the video is may I quote 'Satanistic' which is ridiculous. The lyrics she's singing are the actual versus of this historic Christmas carol. For goodness sake just because she's releasing a hymn and not some manufactured X-factor shit she's being victimised for it. I can't believe it this is a masterpiece beautiful and the voice is amazing, Just stop being stupid!!!
Love this. People you need to chill out. It's an amazing hymn and actually she sings the exact same words that are in British hymnals dating back to the 15th century google it! Yes the video is a bit medieval but that reflects what you want it to. Annie Lennox is an amazing artist and even better at marketing by causing an emotional reaction that all marketers dream of. Well done.
As a Muslim I am shocked and appauled at this disgusting satanic video! People don't be the devils advocat, she s playing with words she does say the witch and when she says it she does the 666 symbol with her hand. the whole video is mocking christianity and paying tribute to the santa with horns aka satan!
Erm, I think it's a reference to the pre-Christian rituals devoted to archetypal virgin-born 'Horned Gods' of resurrection and vegetation, like Dionysus or Cernunnos - generally celebrated during December.
These god's representations as the very force of nature made them both terrible and generous, like the cycle of life and food web.
'Satan' as such was a bastardisation of the negative aspects of these gods, and 'Jesus' a reformation of the positive ones.
Marvelously, subversively, joyously sexy. A fierce, passionate christianist-free Christmas proud of its pagan roots with no use for virginity or other shame-based fetishes. Lennox is a rare artist.
annie - WHY do you do the horned goat sign to baphomet in this song? i've no problem with the pagan elements but i've more than a problem with your subversive hand movements, as a fan, i am MORE than disturbed. why is mary referred to as a witch?
I saw this video on VH1 today(14/11/10) and was blown away-I thought it had been made years ago as this was the theatrical-type video of the mid-late nineties.
It has an amazing sound and visually, its captivating. I love the Celtic overtones to the rhythm and the symbolism in the video. A classic already!
Very lush, theatrical video... almost reminds me of the videos she made around the Diva and Medusa era, with their period costumes and theatrical quality. And the grainy film combined with the semi-animated background elevate this Christmas-themed video to an ethereal level which is both surreal and stunning. As always, Annie Lennox is a visionary and a true class act! Bravo! I look forward to hearing the entire album.
Thanks Annie for providing us a new standard for this timeless classic!! You are such a genius! I've seen you live twice & can't wait for my next opportunity!!
Annie makes commercial mainstream music - but with a twist and with (almost always) unmatched quality! This is so different - and makes me feel bad and guilty for expecting a more conventional "Xmas Pop Song".
The video is majestic - remindes me a lot of the grainy Tchech children's films I used to washed as a kid. Transports me back in time....
There's some fire left in the old girl yet! Thankfully Annie continues on with her own rich sound and unique vision. She's still a beacon in the witheringly thin, tinny, lifeless state of pop music. Oh yeah, and then there's that whole social activism thing she proudly trumpets to shake the human herd. Is there an Annie Lennox Christmas tree ornament out there?

Look at her bio, she herself says she is not a christian, she also says that the story of Jesus should be heard by everyone.
She isn't mocking christianity, it's just her vision for the song.
This is still the best version of this song ever.
And that isn't the 666 symbol she makes, it's the "A-Okay" symbol.
She's not crazy she just has a world feel to her music, which I love.
