The human eye most likely started as a light-sensitive patch of cells, that patch gave the creature an advantage over other species and over the course of hundreds of thousands of years the eye got more and more complex. well if you're on scuba they can rip your mask and reg outta your mouth so you won't be able to breathe or see...pretty damn dangerous if you're at depth obviously! Also they have a really strong and sharp beak at the center of all those tentacles that can cut through about anything.

They were predominantly around 35-55 ft depth, always fairly shallow. They seemed to come down from above, apparently attracted to the video lights.
