One could tell from the foul smell that the baby had been dead for a few days. Baby's body had deteriorated so badly that the bottom half was missing but the mother wouldn't let go the baby. We hated those monkeys whenever we heard that a monkey bit someone or snatched bags from passersby but that day whoever saw that poor mother, felt sorry for her.

Interesting how she keeps returning to the body, clearly looking for responses to her touch. Despite the obvious signs of death such as the fly swarms, the bloating in the infants body, and no doubt the smell of decay after sitting directly in the African sun she persists in trying to 'wake' the infant up. Combine that with her carrying off the body the mother's actions do hit towards similar human reactions of not wanting to accept the death of someone close. Sad, but interesting.

That's pretty sad, notice how she doesn't move the body only touches it, thats like how a human would act, tigers and other animals pick it up and move it and even eat it... Pretty wild to think where these 'animals' will be in a million years or so :o

At 04:47, it looks like the mother taps her head, then her chest a few times, the points to or touches the dead infant. Right before she sits down near it. Very interesting footage! So sad.

@Gonnakillyou Monkey is a paraphyletic group so its distinction is somewhat muddy, many languages dont even have the distinction. Their classification comes from Linnean taxonomy,(looks only), but doesent make alot of sence genetically. But most english speaking people make the distinction because they see "monkey" as lower than "ape"..

@AExodus7 The town I grew up in (in India) there were a lot of monkeys. I saw a female monkey once, carrying her dead baby. One could tell from the foul smell that the baby had been dead for a few days. Baby's body had deteriorated so badly that the bottom half was missing but the mother wouldn't let go the baby. We hated those monkeys whenever we heard that a monkey bit someone or snatched bags from passersby but that day whoever saw that poor mother, felt sorry for her.
