LOL I would love this to be a trilogy but they did not leave a lot of loose ends to justify a sequel. I really enjoyed Avatar and am waiting until this fall when the collector's edition DVDs start coming out, the one available now is the movie -only- which is...lame.
I could agree that this is a moral fable for this later generation, it sparked a lot of controversy in the US between liberals and conservatives over the plot about green vs. greed. Also, furries. Yay furries!
I would have to say that, yes, this is our generation's star wars.
An epic triology, state of the art technology, likeable characters, good vs evil, unliekly hero, mysterious power (force vs Eywa), the underdogs vs the totally superior enemies, and both had rather perdictable story lines.
I just hope that, in terms of sequalage, Avatar fares as well as Star Wars. Avatar isn't there yet, it isn't a classic like Star Wars, however give it time and good direction, and it has potential.
@Rayle75 i have to say.....no star wars was revolutionary in story FX and became a pop culture icon immediately. People still remember seeing Star Wars in theaters and years after Jedi it was talked about all the time. I dont see that in Avatar i can almost guarantee that almost everybody wont tell their kids about Avatar because it doesnt leave a long impression. The story was reused and it sucked ive seen it before, its on the same level of interesting as Aliens, or Dances with the Wolves!
this is probably the only good movie in history that has good special effects. otherwise all the movies that try to just go off special effects suck balls. and i would say that this is probably a lot better than star wars episodes 1,2,3, and 6. and for people saying this is a bad storyline, you obviously don't know a good storyline when you see it.
To say that Avatar could be this generation's Star Wars is to mistake what Star Wars was. A little guy with a small budget made a visually stunning movie that ALSO told a good (though clichéd) story. And it did a great job of telling that story. Sadly, the same cannot be said of the new trilogy and of Avatar. Both were done with big budgets and emphasis on special effects and not plot and story telling. Keep looking guys.
i watched it ysterday, and though it's good and has cool CGI.. too long and needed to be cut (also stupid fudo stuff) so STAR WARS is still BETTER and the BEST as well as TOPPING avatar
Hell no this movie isn't todays SW.Its just good CGI other than that it's a pile of crap. Simple as that. It's the #1 in most overrated movies of all time.
I watched Avatar again some days back and had to laugh. :D The avatars are not perfect. Jake Scully has 5 fingers on each hand whereas Ney'tiri has four. Such is the genius of Avatar.
That is because Jake has combined DNA. Since it is combined at random, the human traits differ in each avatar body, such as Jake's human hands and Grace's almost human-like nose. Avatar is genius. Don't you forget it.
Jakes Avatar has five fingers becouse it is a mix of human and Na'vi DNA and what you get is some of the human features coming through in the end result. In this case its that the Avatars have five fingers and toes, Where as the Na'vi have four fingers and toes.

Star Wars fanatics, tell me, how great was the original Star Wars film after Lucas f!cked it up?? Do you really think it is just as great when Greedo fires first??
Umm ... hadn't Greedo fired first in the original?
It's agree that Lucas went into 'overkill' and watered things down but I think that replacing the 'human' Jabba of the original with the 'slug' was important. The new voice, new appearance, the laughter, and the Huttese ... it really added character to Jabba the Hutt.
I hated this teaser trailer when it first premiered online. Now, after seeing the film, it's actually pretty cool.
But, to answer your question, I definitely think Avatar is the Star Wars of our generation. Considering what Lucas has done to his saga over the years, changing things that never needed it, I dare say, Avatar may be better.
@rajayuca ye lol that scene was badass i loved the fight, but tbh i knew Colonel Badass was gonna win lol i liked the part when jake blew up the ship and Quaritch got into his AMP and before the ship blew up he jumped with his AMP on fire and he lands on the ground and the ship crashes right behind him lol so sick it usually happens to heroes but this time it was the villain who had the dramatic effect there lol
@rajayuca You're right Avatar needed more villains, but i think there will be more in the sequels if they decide to make any, and Colonel Qaritch (Colonel Badass) made a good first impression lol
As an answer to your question: No. For one, Avatar is not for kids. SW is rated PG... the main fans of SW (post it being on TV and video) are five year olds... secondly the story of Avatar is... well... stock. The thing about SW that endures is the heart and the goofiness. It's not too serious, and that's why people like it. It's solid, but still silly. Avatar... I can't picture watching when I get sick and having it make me feel warm and fuzzy inside... I want a story do over on Avatar...
What the hell are you saying? Star Wars silly? For kids? Goofy? Are you mad? Whatch Episode III and then you can speak about Star Wars. Star Wars is mainly followed by mature people. Maybe Avatar is more for children, because of all the colour and the animals. Star Wars has so many dark and evil aspects!
I'm talking about the old Star Wars movies... Episodes 1-3 don't count. And just because something is a little dark doesn't mean it's not for kids. Look at "The Lion King" it's basically Hamlet with a happy ending. Oh, and I gotta say Episodes 1-3 are pretty bad, mostly because they're too serious. It's SW for goodness sakes! It's not Greek tragedy... and the acting... not even Ewan McGregor could save those movies...
Yeah, the acting. Let's talk about Ian McDiarmid or Christopher Lee, c'mon!
And both old trilogy and new trilogy are dark and mature. In Lion King no one cut off hands, moreover that is just a cartoon! So, do you know: cartoon -> kids. Star Wars is ALSO for children, but not mainly for them. "Pirates" is more for children.
well, dont forget this is not a super hero movie xD vilains are there just to be used as a tool for the plot, an avatar 2 without vilains with a good plot would still be cool, imo
I do think Avatar is This generations Star Wars. I think they are both kickass sci fi movies. I mean i liked Star wars before i saw the movie AVATAR but now I just think it;s Ok. Nothing Extraordinary. Avatar was a whole lot better for ME (Maybe not you) the Star wars. It was so good that now i actually learning Na'vi (Nerd Much? I know :) )
I'm from the Star Wars generation and I can totally see Avatar being the Star Wars for a new generation. I was 8 years old when I first saw SW and I left the theater in a complete state of wonderment. I had that same feeling after seeing Avatar. With the whole 3-D experience it was the best time I've had at the movies in a long time.
The funniest part about this video is all the thumbs down...
Some people have waaaaAAAAAaaaay too much time on their hands and must have really boring lives if this is what they have to do to make themselves feel good about the fact that they have no life!
They should probably consider growing up a touch too - I mean this is the behaviour of 5 year olds...
Yeah, I just blocked comment voting on the video. It's pretty stupid the way perfectly intelligent comments, or even OPINIONS are being hidden by precisely 6 thumbs-downs. And I wish to point out that I had shared this trailer back when we knew nothing about Avatar and very little about its plot. I had high hopes from the film and this was a 'fanvid' and nothing else was (legally) available for sharing.
avatar was THE SHIT, comparing avatar to star wars is strange though cuz they both have a assload of fans(even though its only a few weeks after) but theyre alot different.I wouldnt be surprised though if they had trekkie type fans, but na`vi`s? lol awsome
In terms of sales, Cameron's a genius. Star Wars was hugely popular with boys. They kept coming back. Cameron's own Titanic was so popular with girls that at the time people called it "Star Wars for girls". Huge repeat business.
Now, Cameron's pushed the technical limits, put in some gunfights, a hot alien, and a love story at the center. Something for everyone, and it can't be fully appreciated unless you go to the theater. That last bit makes it a lot like Star Wars.
Yes, I "liked" the movie but I would not put it put there with films such as Star Wars or LOTRs. The Images were the best eye candy I have seen on the big screen in long time but the story is little weak. If the story and Charaters were a little more fleshed out I would put it up there with those flims but as it is its just fun candy with an okay story.
I hope in the sequal they fix that problem and maby I'll consider it seeing that way.
Tears treamed down my face the entire film! That never happend before. I was overwhelmed with emotion the entire film. Cameron's masterpiece. It will clean up at the box-office and the oscars. This film heralds a change in Earth human's awareness, adn acceptance, of extraterrestrials. Finally! Best movie of ALL TIME! Cameron is truly: "KING OF THE WORLD"!!!
There must be a lot of star wars geeks watching this video to give everyone a thumbs down for expressing their opinion, I'm a starwars fan like most but there is more heart, beauty and emotion in this one movie than in the entire starwars saga...and I'm glad to have seen it :) Bring on the thumbs down!!!
I was thinking that exact question ones I finished watching it. It's just or even more epic, unique, emotional and grounbreaking as the original Star Wars saga. I'm glad this was created for my generation and those coming behind us to appreciate a great work of art with a deep meaning behind it.
I think you're remembering what it was like back then when they first came out. They were incredible because no one else was doing big sci-fi epics. Now, sci-fi epics come out every six months and you can't hardly impress people with special effects anymore, which makes Avatar even more impressive. People weren't dazzled only by the effects. People liked the characters and the story. The last three SW movies were terrible and there wasn't a likable character in the entire trilogy.
nothing can beat star wars! (episode 4,5 and 6) avatar was okay, but not so strong a story for a sequal, i've seen better 3D graphic computer animated movies than avatar, for instance final fantasy!
avatar is good, with its cgi, technology , story and all, but it will never be the great cultural phernomenon that star wars was in 1977.
If you compare the film gross, star wars made 435 million in 1977, when US tickets cost only a third of todays, while as of now avatar has only grossed 380 million.
Avatar may be one of only 5 films grossing over a billion, but if you adjust for inflation, the star wars trilogy films grossed 2.2bil, 1.5bil and 1.3bil respectively, way more than avatar.
Technically speaking Avatar is a huge step forward for the movie industry, just like Star Wars was back in the 70's... so in that aspect, they are definitely comparable. But the stories are different, both movies are magical and Avatar is going to be a CLASSIC, that's for sure!!!
From what i heard... people said that the second movie is about jake and neytiri, but also their children? If this is so, then, darn, i'm going to be so mad. I really don't like movies that seem to switch characters like that. I think it ends up ruining the first movie if they swicth to different characters
It does not matter if he goes to other moons, or uses more special effects; the script is all that will matter and the story has to be good. Personally I don't want a sequel because the experience is too sweet for me and I'm afraid of anything ruining it. :) But perhaps, since the other movies were written along with the first, it may work - after all, the only films with good sequels have had these characteristics - look at Star Wars trilogy, LOTR ...
Im totally in love with this movie! It is definitely my favourite movie of all time!
Making a sequel to this movie, or any movie is dangerous and mostly unsuccessful. In order for an Avatar 2 to be any bit of success Cameron is going to have to take his time writing the new one. It has to be a damn good sequel to even think about showing the public. And if you truly respect this film you wont mind waiting 5, possible 6 years for the sequel to be written. Humans in Avatar 2 would be a mistake!
cameron wrote all three movies or stories along time ago, he said that if Avatar was successful he would make the other 2. Don't worry the 2 sequels have been worked on for all this time and all they need are scripts and the usual movie work. The sequels will follow jake and neytiri cause they are the main characters along with the other humans.
The one thing we all know is is that Cameron is great at doing sequels
Funny I loved this film but I don't want to see a sequel. Perhaps it is the ending of the story and the imagined possibilities that stir in your mind . The story as short as it is cannot be sweetened with more tales.
I hope there will not e a sequal, because it may destroy the whole thing about avatar. (like most sequels do), and I can´t see what the next should be about.
really a part 2? I woulddd loveee for another movie like this or a sequel but don't you think sequels always seem to get worse...except in LOTR and Star Wars =D
My two cents ... Avatar is like Star Wars because it is bold, it uses another world to illustrate very contemporary issues, etc. Avatar carries a poignant message about ecological devastation and how we need to respect animals and that we are a part of Nature. SW leaned toward metaphysics and weakly addressed politics. Avatar balanced a terrific plot with CGI - the new SW films didn't. IMHO Avatar is better and that is to no discredit of SW. I pray they stick to a solid script for the sequels.
Hmm ... perhaps a theme for Avatar 2 could be on these lines: The Na'vi need to prepare for a massive counterattack by a desperate Earth needing resources. So they need to modernize and use more advanced technology - for which they will need to exploit their own moon. This leads to skirmishes between the tribes and then an army from Earth enters this equation at the climax. How they find a way through it and manage to balance technology with nature's health, and the pain it causes all of them.
@penguinskywalker the other tribe start to fight eatch other they are done, and as a fan i woud be disapointed ( Toruk Mak Taouk rules). But I agree your idea woud be explosive for my minde, thanks for sharing
( the film is just the beginning... the humans wont stop.. theyll come with a bigger army...)and so on... For Example Lord of the rings is a fascinating book/film and needed at least 3 parts... 1 is too short to commit a great fancommunity to this universe/film and fascinate them for a longer period of time!
I think the film Avatar is to short to be as good as star wars.. i watched it in the cinema.. and its amazing! The world the people... the whole universe .. But StarWars needed 6 parts to tell about the universe and all its creatures and if somebody wants to put this into 1 film its too short i think... There is enough empty space to fill with stuff around the na'vi and their war against the humans
@wearedeadya dude i whent to see it twice and i am going for the third time tomorow, it cost me 15 buks each time, I think they are going to have anought money for Avatar 2 and 3 ( sory for the english not my first language!)
just think about it what is it gonna be.. a gigantic war between two worlds and probably a massacre on the Na'vi they have no technological advantage. and well at least they have a period of 6 years to recover for the next wave.. but still makin a second movie will be tough cause you just gotta make something for the navi to be more than just natives...with bows and arrows turuk mok tu or something like that with sea beasts or i dont know but its gotta be big.. anywhoo the whole movie is awsome
i am in complete awe at the beauty and depth of emotion this film made me feel...i can't think of ANY movie i've ever seen that made me feel like this. this is TOPS
STAR WARS didn't have amazingly fleshed out characters or an amazing script. It was a collection of archetypes that always work- The Princess, The Charming, roguish Anti-Hero, the funny sidekicks, the blonde, noble hero, the dark villain, etc- and the plot and script were sreviceable but nothing spectacular. I LOVE SW, but people tend to forget that it was nothing above a retelling of many long-standing tropes of literature, just set in space,

Not to sound cheasy, but it seems to be that the romance between jake and neytiri is on of the few romantic sub plot that has substances. The movie looks really good and I hope it delivers.
Yeah, it can - IF the story has some substance. Thankfully, people today aren't fooled with special effects anymore; good movies have to have a good script, imposing characters and values that people can relate to. While saying this, I'm gonna ignore Twilight and the like, they are watched by young teen girls and they don't have much brains. :P
I dunno, it seems kinda boring and bluckbusters tend to focus on visual effects rather than in-depth story with a rich background. So far it's just a same old thing about good guys who look to humans like bad guys vs bad guys who look like good ones. Add some love scenes and monsters and there we go. I dunno, we'll wait and see, but if special effects are all this movie will have to offer than I'm gonna be disappointed.

Nothing Extraordinary. Avatar was a whole lot better for ME (Maybe not you) the Star wars. It was so good that now i actually learning Na'vi (Nerd Much? I know :) )

Avatar wasn't developed enough to do what star wars did.

Avatar was good... Star Wars was good...
They are both the Hero's Journey. They are both special effects showcases for their respective time periods.
They are both amazing pieces that should be shown to children in perpetuity.
Oh, and I guess I'd best thank the dullards with too much time to spare - and no imagination - for their thumbs down in advance!
Thanks douchetards!
TerminalViscosity 2 years ago
The funniest part about this video is all the thumbs down...
Some people have waaaaAAAAAaaaay too much time on their hands and must have really boring lives if this is what they have to do to make themselves feel good about the fact that they have no life!
They should probably consider growing up a touch too - I mean this is the behaviour of 5 year olds...
TerminalViscosity 2 years ago
Yeah, I just blocked comment voting on the video. It's pretty stupid the way perfectly intelligent comments, or even OPINIONS are being hidden by precisely 6 thumbs-downs. And I wish to point out that I had shared this trailer back when we knew nothing about Avatar and very little about its plot. I had high hopes from the film and this was a 'fanvid' and nothing else was (legally) available for sharing.
penguinskywalker 2 years ago
Then I should thank you for reminding me of the Star Wars/Avatar corralery.
I really do think Avatar is something a bit special. Just the way I felt about Star Wars as a child.
Let's just hope James Cameron doesn't let his ego and ideas inflate, the way Lucas did!
I still love the Star Wars, but somehow Avatar resonated very deeply with me.
Like cumbas, I am a member of Generation Star Wars, but oh my various gods (including Eywa!)! Avatar!

why do people compare so much? star wars is bomb, and so is avatar. they will both look great when they grace my TV screen.

That last bit makes it a lot like Star Wars.
oodoodanoo 2 years ago
Okay now that I have seen it I like to comment.

It is funny that people's opinion gets thumbsdown so fast.....

Beamshipcaptain 2 years ago

(episode 4,5 and 6) avatar was okay, but not so strong a story for a sequal, i've seen better 3D graphic computer animated movies than avatar, for instance final fantasy!
zakuzen 2 years ago
Final Fantasy was garbage. That's why no one paid to go see it.
shade1978x 2 years ago
Final Fantasy was awesome for the time. But I never felt a kind of connection with that film the way I like Avatar...
And Final Fantasy was short. TOO short.
The cast & story were ok.
Too sad Square went bankrupt =(
...Avatar is still better than Final Fantasy and I don´t mean the CGI.
bogeyatyour6 2 years ago
Star wars is cliche and romantic heroish, which people favored in the 70s. You can't compare that to today's distinct storylines.
SemiAdeptperson 2 years ago
I think Avatar is similar to Star Wars in the sense that it is nothing like anything we have ever seen.
Can't wait for the sequel!
silvaportugal 2 years ago
"This generation's Starwars" already happened, and they sucked compared to the ones made in the '70s.
CaptainAndrew1991 2 years ago
avatar is good, with its cgi, technology , story and all, but it will never be the great cultural phernomenon that star wars was in 1977.
ASSHOLELA 2 years ago
if it is our generation's version of starwars the does that mean there will be 6 Avatars?
StinkyFeetTards 2 years ago
Three. :) The REAL Star Wars had 3 movies. The new ones aren't quite in the same league, even though ROTS was good.
penguinskywalker 2 years ago
Technically speaking Avatar is a huge step forward for the movie industry, just like Star Wars was back in the 70's... so in that aspect, they are definitely comparable. But the stories are different, both movies are magical and Avatar is going to be a CLASSIC, that's for sure!!!

From what i heard... people said that the second movie is about jake and neytiri, but also their children? If this is so, then, darn, i'm going to be so mad. I really don't like movies that seem to switch characters like that. I think it ends up ruining the first movie if they swicth to different characters
mzXhottie 2 years ago
It does not matter if he goes to other moons, or uses more special effects; the script is all that will matter and the story has to be good. Personally I don't want a sequel because the experience is too sweet for me and I'm afraid of anything ruining it. :) But perhaps, since the other movies were written along with the first, it may work - after all, the only films with good sequels have had these characteristics - look at Star Wars trilogy, LOTR ...
penguinskywalker 2 years ago
Im totally in love with this movie! It is definitely my favourite movie of all time!
Making a sequel to this movie, or any movie is dangerous and mostly unsuccessful. In order for an Avatar 2 to be any bit of success Cameron is going to have to take his time writing the new one. It has to be a damn good sequel to even think about showing the public. And if you truly respect this film you wont mind waiting 5, possible 6 years for the sequel to be written. Humans in Avatar 2 would be a mistake!
wigglychickenable 2 years ago
cameron wrote all three movies or stories along time ago, he said that if Avatar was successful he would make the other 2. Don't worry the 2 sequels have been worked on for all this time and all they need are scripts and the usual movie work. The sequels will follow jake and neytiri cause they are the main characters along with the other humans.
The one thing we all know is is that Cameron is great at doing sequels

True, Terminator 2 was awesome in fairness. I guess we can put our trust in this director to make another mond blowing film!:D

James Cameron said that this is going to be a trilogy but e hasn't started writing seriously the scripts(or whatever they are called)

avatar 2 woud be fucking awsume but what could be the strory to make it at least good like the first one!!!
ormini24 2 years ago
Hmm ... perhaps a theme for Avatar 2 could be on these lines: The Na'vi need to prepare for a massive counterattack by a desperate Earth needing resources.

DerBlutgott888 2 years ago
I think the film Avatar is to short to be as good as star wars.. i watched it in the cinema.. and its amazing! The world the people... the whole universe .. But StarWars needed 6 parts to tell about the universe and all its creatures and if somebody wants to put this into 1 film its too short i think... There is enough empty space to fill with stuff around the na'vi and their war against the humans

just think about it what is it gonna be.. a gigantic war between two worlds and probably a massacre on the Na'vi they have no technological advantage. and well at least they have a period of 6 years to recover for the next wave.. but still makin a second movie will be tough cause you just gotta make something for the navi to be more than just natives...with bows and arrows turuk mok tu or something like that with sea beasts or i dont know but its gotta be big.. anywhoo the whole movie is awsome

I LOVE SW, but people tend to forget that it was nothing above a retelling of many long-standing tropes of literature, just set in space,

yankeejojo 2 years ago
Yeah, it can - IF the story has some substance. Thankfully, people today aren't fooled with special effects anymore; good movies have to have a good script, imposing characters and values that people can relate to. While saying this, I'm gonna ignore Twilight and the like, they are watched by young teen girls and they don't have much brains. :P
penguinskywalker 2 years ago
I dunno, it seems kinda boring and bluckbusters tend to focus on visual effects rather than in-depth story with a rich background. So far it's just a same old thing about good guys who look to humans like bad guys vs bad guys who look like good ones. Add some love scenes and monsters and there we go. I dunno, we'll wait and see, but if special effects are all this movie will have to offer than I'm gonna be disappointed.
