The greenhouse looks great, but there is one thing that concerns me. I learned the hard way that using poly from a hardware store isn't really the greatest idea. It'll last for a season or two, but soon the UV from the sunlight will eat it away. Do yourself a favor, when it's time to replace it, buy poly with a UV protective coating from a nursery supply warehouse. It's more expensive, but it will last much longer and you won't have to replace it nearly as often. Happy gardening!
@willfrost Thanks, i agree. I think i did mention the longivity issue in one of the videos. I totally plan on replacing it with actual greenhouse poly. But i was excited to get it covered quickly due to it beings so cold here this winter.. the poly was only $20 @ home depot so i dont mind replacing it. I am also strongly considering rolling it up in the summer anyway.. so maybe it would last a bit longer.. any ideas/issues on that? Thanks again
Oh yeah.. i remember that show. They were building a hoop house.. thanks you. Please let me know if you come across it and i will look too. Thats a great solution. I will also be purchasing a roll of shade cloth to cover the greenhouse in the sumer to lower temps.
Your greenhouse turned out great! Your idea's for keeping it cool in the summer may need a fan. ;) I know how hot it gets down here. I haven't done allot with the garden, except added some topsoil to it. Been raining allot. I have finished my plans for the chicken coop/storage shed. And plan on starting it when we get our tax return. ;) There has been allot of house repairs that have kept me busy for the last couple of months. I hope to see your greenhouse in action this spring!
I live in Trust that, all is well. No matter what. Sounds like a silly answer but that where i'm at. I have been here 5 years, my wife 16 and we havent seen anything that this greenhouse couldn't weather.. minus maybe replacing the poly. In 30 minutes i can remove the poly if needed.. but thats beside the point really. If i worried about evey little shadow that made its way into my mind.. i'd never do anything. That's not how I want to live. Why are you worried for me?
Okay so i just saw that you had a child born right before a hurricane and the loss of power.. gave me a different take on your comment. I am also about to be a father in 19 day- ish(already a step father to 2 boys).. we are having a home birth in water so there's really a need for power, just trust. I think that reflects the difference in our perspectives. Not saying mine is "right" at all. I really live from the view that i do my best always, and whatever happens is supposed to.
Yes, Gustav has giving me a new respect for Hurricanes and when I build now, I have a bad habit of wanting to put in 3 foot concrete footers for a chicken coop.
I'm not worried about you. I'm doing everything you are doing and just following your progress and relating it to my own. I wish I could have the time to video log my place, but it is just like yours..
congrats on the coming Child, the greatest Treasure on earth.
Thanks brother. Its funny that you brought up the question if this greenhouse is strong enough.. cuz this is really the most lasting thing i've built. I tend to be impulsive and view all things as temp. anyway. So i thought i went all out on this. Using 2x4s instead of pvc like i planned. 3/8" lag anchors into the block and stuff.. but i DO see what your saying. Just grab a camera.. Lets show people the many different ways to Live. I'd love to see it. Peace & abundance
You misspelled Homestead in the opening on the video I miss that old town home depot has temp control fan to keep a more growing season temps year round
oops.. yes i did, i'd have to repost it to fix it...maybe i will I actually live in Tarpon Springs, on the west coast and much farther north than Homestead. When i chose the name for my channel i didnt realize that it would be confused with the town. I was aiming for the traditional idea of a self-sufficient "homesteading".
Where did the song come from? It's great!

Sweet. Good tunes too.
I saw someplace (maybe Garden Fork) where they made an automatic venting window for a greenhouse. Done cheaply, too. If I find it, I'll let ya know.

What are you going to do about Hurricanes? As cool as that is, it seems variable to high winds in Florida.
