  • I have a grey 1970's dod preamp 250, in absolute pristine condition for sale. Bargain price, email me at:

    alexander_imaging@live.co.uk

  • too anally setup for a gearmanndude demo, haha...

  • just get a yellow one and change a few components to the gray's specs

  • Indistinguishable. Now I'll feel okay about just getting the yellow one.

  • So funny to see a video of the yellow DOD! I still have that pedal. It was the first pedal I ever bought....got it in 1982 I believe.

  • He IS Jack black

  • The yellow one sounds more warmer. Must be those mosfet transistors KINDYROOT was talking about. I think I'm sold.

  • Its elecrtonic circuit is so simple that I made a vintage DOD250 (with a LM741) on a prototype board, and it sounds good for a 2$ project (its electronics are cheaper then the metal box).

Thanks for the demo, I'm thinking of upgranding the circuit.

...And Yes, it is super duper anal in many ways!

  • oh great demo!

  • btw the difference between the 741 chip and the LF351 is that the first (very old) had bipolar transistors while the second has mosfet transistors (which are more sensitive), and in addition the whole circuit has less noise, it can technically be considered a good upgrade, but musicians usually don't welcome change with open arms.

  • I thought that the yellow sounded more fizzy than the grey.

  • the yellow is just slightly brighter but in a nice kinda way id not buy the grey over the yellow essp that their so close in sound

  • I hope someone has told you that you sound a lot like Bruce Campball from Burn Notice.

  • isnt this what the ocd was based off of,

this, the voodoo labs od, ocd, and the mxr distortion+ all basically have this circuit

  • the grey one seems to have fatter tone to me

  • the yellow sounds more compressed...maybe a bit mid scooped..grey a slight bit mo punchy

  • Thumbed up for "super duper anal"

  • greys got sizzzle for shizzle

  • You do a fantastic job man.Just got my pedaltrain too..loving it.Thanks for helping.

  • The yellow sounds a little sweeter to me, so probably what I'd go for. This has been a great video I now know what to look for, cheers,

  • hm....whats your ebay profile?

  • wheres the time bomb boost in this comparison?

  • From analogman site: "Some of the old yellow OD250s were almost identical to the grey ones".

So if you have one of the first yellow ones this comparison could be useless....

  • @MrDG80 it does look beat to hell

  • @MrDG80 well, actually he said they sound identical to his ears

  • I like the grey one better.

  • Yellow sounds way tubier. A little bit more natural in my opinion.

  • The yellow sounds more compressed to me. Better, in my opinion.

  • It's true bypass???

  • They sound almost exactly the same.

  • man , I can't find the right sound. I'm looking for a pedal that would sound kindda like Axel Rudi Pell sound. He says he uses a Ibanez Tube Screamer but that guitar doesn't sound at all like Tube Screamer . any help guys ?

  • I did the same thing 10 years ago & yep... my Grey Box went up on Ebay for about $400... kept several of my original Yellow's.

    Great Vid.

    Thanks!

  • @chucksguitarshop All 3 of mine have the 351 chips. I used to play one in front of the other & use them both modestly. They really beef up the tone when you cascade them!

  • Jack you should put a Mask in your face like buckethead hahaha

  • nice voice,at the begining of the video you remember me to Ron Wood

  • That LF351N op-amp that particular yellow keeps inside in general has a bit tighter sound than 741. Tried them both in my DOD 250 Grey clone and the difference can be heard. I prefer the 741 for shredding.

Imo LF351N is a bit better for rhythm and palm mute. Some old yellows were equipped with TL081CP, i used to own one of these but didn't like it. Early yellows had 741 like in grey version.

  • He is JB.

  • How would this sound with silicone diodes?

  • you sound like jack black! thats cool!!

  • Sounds pretty much identical, especially at lower gain...both awesome sounding. I have the same (original) yella version, so good to hear how it stacks against the gray. I had a yella reissue at one stage, which was ok but a bit dull - no excitement to the tone unlike the original yella 250. Re-issue is still HEAPS better than the YJM308. Peace out...!!!!

  • could u do a demo at some point of the later dod preamp?the fx10 bi fet preamp, btw awesome demos!

  • "and to get super duper anal with it" lmaooooo

  • YELLOW - sounds a little more rich

    GREY - sounds slightly brighter

BOTH sound more similar than they do different

***like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.***

  • @Ncuab agreed. the grey one has a little more clarity, the yellow one a little more body.

  • whats the name of the grey one? is it and selector effect?

  • ZOMGGMDFTW

  • The gray sounds better but not $300 better!

  • I found two UA741CP chips today!! they are from the 70's!!!! ripped them out of some very old electronic boards!!!

  • They do sound similar, even though the circuit board looks different.

I guess it all boils down to which color you like the best. I prefer the gray.

  • You sound like Jack Black

  • He is Jack Black..;-)

  • I think they sound reeeal similiar with the gain above say, 12 o'clock...but for me the difference was in the lower gain territory. I think the grey sounded fuller then. Or maybe it's just that i'm about to build a grey and i WANT it to be better. Ha! :)

  • Interesting. Just bought a 741 to stick in

my yellow original which aslo has a 351

and a very similar layout to the one (yellow) in the video. I installed a chip socket so that I can swap back and forth to see if I hear a difference. It will have been a waste of time if the difference is as subtle as that.

  • I think the grey one is bit better. It sounds like it has a little more umph behind it, where as the yellow one is a little softer in the midrange.

  • i honeslty agree with ya. and i think the newer ones are even softer

  • Can you tell me what exact year the grey model is and what year the yellow is? There is another version of the grey that added a 100 ohm resistor which I'm trying to pin down because a clone I'm making has it. I know that is a one of the pre-reissue yellows but didn't the first ones use the same circuit board as the greys? This one has a different later-yellow PCB layout.

  • awesome vid, picked up a yellow reissue, and im with the others on how it sounds "the same" as the grey one...i do pro mods under my business carson lane fx, and am going to mod this one asap...just a switch for capacitor selection (more/less bass) and true bypass with led...for starters...and to answer about the dist + THEY ARE PRACTICALLY THE SAME CIRCUIT! so their tones are going to be darn close to one another...personally i like the dod better, seems to have a little more output stock...

  • I agree - they sound the same... not that I have an Eric Johnson ear for tone.

BUT I want that A/B Switch box you got!

  • How is this pedal compared to a Distortion+?

I really dont see so much use in this box, only if you got a nice tube amp non master volume to cook,

  • i think the 70's grey one def sounds better but it goes for 4 times the price or thereabouts... better sounding for sure but maybe not better value.. all comes down to how much those $100 bills mean to you...

  • I've got one of the old yellow versions, beat to hell just like the one in this demo. Picked it up for $20 years ago and I'd never part with it. Cool to see how it stacks up against the gray version everyone hypes so much.

  • The yellow one was better sounding.

  • Whatever the difference, it was very very small. I simply do not buy that there's some "magic" in the LM741. You can get 741's at radio shack. I've tried different ones in pedals that I've built (MXR dist+/DOD250types) and it was hard to tell the difference from 741 to 741. If germanman couldn't tell the difference between a 741 and the 351, then let's face it there's no way yr gonna tell the difference bet 2 different 741s. Change the 4.7uF cap to 22uF, get a radio shack 741 (if you must)

  • I took the grey, like snowbrdr88 sad... Great video!

YJM 308 is a DOD 250 modified, yes. I think he uses the both nowadays.

  • We are really splitting hairs here.

  • What is the value of the orange cap on the lower right when looking from the back (near the output jack)? Is it 103 or 104? DOD used either on the early yellow versions...I know this because I have several and I noticed that 2 were different...with the 103 caps. I am curious what yours is...since that cap will make a BIG difference in its tone.

  • gmd ur so anul. lol no your just tryin to mke it a fair test just how they teach you science clas

  • jack black!

  • Seems to me that the yellow one has slightly more mids and the black one is a bit more scooped, but I might be wrong mind you... -_-;;

  • I feel like the black one is slightly more transparent: more of the nuances of the strat come through.

  • Love the A/b switch you need to use it in all the side by side demos

  • They sound the same to me, I'd choose the yellow one for looks lol.

  • With A/B switch - your demos even better!

  • Is this the one that Malmsteen's is based on?

  • I like the gray pedal more, It sounds a bit more raw to me I guess, not in a dirty kind of way, but more natural. I don't know, but they looked like really easy builds when you opened up the back.

  • YES!!! Gut shots! That is sweet!

    Thanks GMD!

  • DOCTOR ZZZEEEEEEE MAZ

  • Interesting!!! I preferred the yellow version at the lower gain settings because it sounded a little more full to me. However, when you cranked the gain on both pedals the grey version seemed to hold more note definition.

    Thanks GMD! Keep on rockin!!!

  • I dunno, they both sound really good. If I was going to be buying one of these pedals, I'd probably just get em both and use one as a clean boost.

  • Quite similar, arent't they?

  • Really similar sounding at lower gain settings but as you cranked the gain the grey one seemed to hold a bit more clarity whereas the yellow version seemed to get a little fuzzy, to me anyway. Thanks for the great demos GMD.

  • really hard to tell over youtube, they are so damn close. both killer pedals. nice, subtle overdrive.

  • the grey one sounds fuller to me!

  • How do you tell between the original and the reissue. And where did you find these I cant find them anywhere, Thanks.

  • strat is a good choice for these pedals
