Its elecrtonic circuit is so simple that I made a vintage DOD250 (with a LM741) on a prototype board, and it sounds good for a 2$ project (its electronics are cheaper then the metal box).
Thanks for the demo, I'm thinking of upgranding the circuit.
btw the difference between the 741 chip and the LF351 is that the first (very old) had bipolar transistors while the second has mosfet transistors (which are more sensitive), and in addition the whole circuit has less noise, it can technically be considered a good upgrade, but musicians usually don't welcome change with open arms.
man , I can't find the right sound. I'm looking for a pedal that would sound kindda like Axel Rudi Pell sound. He says he uses a Ibanez Tube Screamer but that guitar doesn't sound at all like Tube Screamer . any help guys ?
@chucksguitarshop All 3 of mine have the 351 chips. I used to play one in front of the other & use them both modestly. They really beef up the tone when you cascade them!
That LF351N op-amp that particular yellow keeps inside in general has a bit tighter sound than 741. Tried them both in my DOD 250 Grey clone and the difference can be heard. I prefer the 741 for shredding.
Imo LF351N is a bit better for rhythm and palm mute. Some old yellows were equipped with TL081CP, i used to own one of these but didn't like it. Early yellows had 741 like in grey version.
Sounds pretty much identical, especially at lower gain...both awesome sounding. I have the same (original) yella version, so good to hear how it stacks against the gray. I had a yella reissue at one stage, which was ok but a bit dull - no excitement to the tone unlike the original yella 250. Re-issue is still HEAPS better than the YJM308. Peace out...!!!!
***like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.***
I think they sound reeeal similiar with the gain above say, 12 o'clock...but for me the difference was in the lower gain territory. I think the grey sounded fuller then. Or maybe it's just that i'm about to build a grey and i WANT it to be better. Ha! :)
and a very similar layout to the one (yellow) in the video. I installed a chip socket so that I can swap back and forth to see if I hear a difference. It will have been a waste of time if the difference is as subtle as that.
Can you tell me what exact year the grey model is and what year the yellow is? There is another version of the grey that added a 100 ohm resistor which I'm trying to pin down because a clone I'm making has it. I know that is a one of the pre-reissue yellows but didn't the first ones use the same circuit board as the greys? This one has a different later-yellow PCB layout.
awesome vid, picked up a yellow reissue, and im with the others on how it sounds "the same" as the grey one...i do pro mods under my business carson lane fx, and am going to mod this one asap...just a switch for capacitor selection (more/less bass) and true bypass with led...for starters...and to answer about the dist + THEY ARE PRACTICALLY THE SAME CIRCUIT! so their tones are going to be darn close to one another...personally i like the dod better, seems to have a little more output stock...
i think the 70's grey one def sounds better but it goes for 4 times the price or thereabouts... better sounding for sure but maybe not better value.. all comes down to how much those $100 bills mean to you...
I've got one of the old yellow versions, beat to hell just like the one in this demo. Picked it up for $20 years ago and I'd never part with it. Cool to see how it stacks up against the gray version everyone hypes so much.
Whatever the difference, it was very very small. I simply do not buy that there's some "magic" in the LM741. You can get 741's at radio shack. I've tried different ones in pedals that I've built (MXR dist+/DOD250types) and it was hard to tell the difference from 741 to 741. If germanman couldn't tell the difference between a 741 and the 351, then let's face it there's no way yr gonna tell the difference bet 2 different 741s. Change the 4.7uF cap to 22uF, get a radio shack 741 (if you must)
What is the value of the orange cap on the lower right when looking from the back (near the output jack)? Is it 103 or 104? DOD used either on the early yellow versions...I know this because I have several and I noticed that 2 were different...with the 103 caps. I am curious what yours is...since that cap will make a BIG difference in its tone.
I like the gray pedal more, It sounds a bit more raw to me I guess, not in a dirty kind of way, but more natural. I don't know, but they looked like really easy builds when you opened up the back.
Interesting!!! I preferred the yellow version at the lower gain settings because it sounded a little more full to me. However, when you cranked the gain on both pedals the grey version seemed to hold more note definition.
Really similar sounding at lower gain settings but as you cranked the gain the grey one seemed to hold a bit more clarity whereas the yellow version seemed to get a little fuzzy, to me anyway. Thanks for the great demos GMD.
I have a grey 1970's dod preamp 250, in absolute pristine condition for sale. Bargain price, email me at:

From analogman site: "Some of the old yellow OD250s were almost identical to the grey ones".
So if you have one of the first yellow ones this comparison could be useless....
