@Polybun I respect all engines, but hemi's are big, complicated beasts in comparison, not to mention have been done a bajillion, zillion times. what impresses me about rotaries are the general simplicity/power vs. low amount of moving parts etc.
2 cylinder where are u getting 2 cylinder from? It might have 2 rotors but u are forgetting about the 3 faces on each rotor! For u.s. Emmissions porposes a mazda rotary is considerd a 6 cylinder!
@glastornjet73 You'll are both wrong A rotary engine its considered a 4cyl " 13B" means 1.3L.., "20B" which is a 3 rotor is a 2.0 and 26B which is a 4 rotor is a 2.6 and that would be a 6cyl ok so don't be talking shit.... And thats a shame for American Muscle my 88 Turbo II runs better than many v8s .... :D
Man I've got this great idea for a dragster. Im' going to take an engine that is easily ruined by detonation, then run it on a fuel that does nothing but detonate! Oh wait.....
@Tj1056 detonation is referring to detonating before top dead center (of a piston engine). Not sure how it works on a rotary but it's essentially fuel exploding before it should, eroding the piston heads, or rotor surface.
@Tj1056 It's not a timing problem. The detonation is caused simply by the high temperatures and vapor concentrations of a high compression motor detonating the fuel prior to the spark. The only cure is lower compression, higher octane or a very late and accurate fuel delivery (as in the case of direct injection). Supposedly rotaries don't have as bad detonation problems as piston motors. I'm unsure, but it's probably due to lower compression.
@jcadlols yes that is all part of it also... it useally only happens in cases where people do not know how to maintain there rotary... probably like Polybun... a maintained properly and cooled properly will never pre detonate... even my car... runs hot as shit never pre detonates...
@Tj1056 This car isn't running on gasoline, it's running on nitormethane, which can only detonate. That is it's only method of combustion. It doesn't have a flame path, the spark sets off a shockwave that quickly confligrates the entire fuel/air charge. Think high order high explosive explosion.
@Tj1056 not at all. Detonation is when the fuel combusts ahead of the flame travel. What you are thinking of is predetonation. Detonation is another problem all together. You end up with multiple flame paths which cause unexpected high pressures. It'll blow head gaskets, it'll lift heads off studs, bend rods, break wrist pins and blow holes clean through the piston. I'ts not something you experience often on gasoline, unless you have very high boost. However, on nitromethane this is common
@jcadlols The problem with rotaries and detonation is where the detonation starts and therefore, where the highest point of the detonation wave is. The rotor end seals are where you see the highest heat, highest pressure, and where detonation will always occur and where the damage will be the highest. The rotor end seals are also the most fragile part of the engine and essential to maintain compression.
@Polybun Oh okay. That might help to explain why after many years of going to the race track, i've never seen a rotary catastrophically fail. The worst I've seen has been blown end seals. Although then again, they have less moving parts and no valvetrain. Cheers :)
@jcadlols Well that's about all they can do. Occasionaly you do see one lift off the hood, but that is usually caused by an explosion in the turbo charger shredding it to pieces.
The other fatal flaw they have is that while they don't have reciprocating mass, they do still have rotating mass and that rotating mass is fairly significant. That rotor is awfully heavy. That combined with the engines awfully low moment of power makes for a rather slow to rev and lazy feeling engine.
@Polybun My REW's far from "slow to rev and lazy feeling", nor is my uncles bone stock RX-8. You've obviously had too much crack.. or maybe you're really aji8, hiding under a different name, cause you got shamed outta that one a few pages back, haha.
@Tj1056 Bullshit. Any wankel engine is easily destroyed by detonation. It detonates, the rotor end seals shatter, the engine is done. I suppose if you made them out of silicon carbide they might live, but then you would destroy the cylinder quickly. Show me it making a pass inside of 6 seconds, and I'll be shocked.
@Polybun there is already rotary in the 6s... you are totally mistaken... if it is ruined by detonation then it would never have made it to production... easy as that...
@Tj1056 Untrue. All wankel rotary engines are sensative to detonation. Always have been. The end seals on the rotors are rather fragile. Detonation destroys them rather quickly. It also so happens that detonation is always going to initiate, and be the most powerful at the point of highest energy. The end seal area has the highest pressure, and highest heat. It's not uncommon at all for the endseals to be blown right off the rotor on mazdas being pushed hard.
@Polybun Oh yeah and How do you explain this???... A rotary engine can go up to 13,000 Rmp Cause mine does..... SO if you saw a rotary engine blow up cuz the owner din't know shit about rotaries. That doesn't mean they are shitty Engijnes ok so dude you're wrong....
@dabestprieto I didn't say shitty, I said the design had flaws that need to be addressed with improved materials. Materials that don't currently exist. RPM has nothing to do with end seal failure, detonation does. Detonation is most likely to occur at low rpm's under high load, so your comment about maximum rpm means nothing. Not to mention 500 cubic inch v8's will do 13,000rpm as well, they do all the time in prostock. what is your point?
...and *still* waiting 3 months later. Incidentally, PAC Performance in Australia just set a new world record on alcohol with a 20B... 6.58 @ 208 mph. :))
@BryceI3 true, but only in the 1/8 mile... the 6.58 run by PAC Performance was for the full 1/4 mile. So that 13B on the bottle is only running mid 11's in the 1/4. /watch?v=UszPwNF-AiQ
just reading that aji8... wow fin dumb dude i ask u 1 question what were the reasons the rotary design was banned from le mans even after dog'd by lambo, porche,benzo,bmw... any 1 else care to chime? god i hope some 1 as close minded as u does not live in the U.S. thats why we r falling behind in tech stupid asses like u cant think outside the box
Hey mate. I can't help but be a little bit cynical about your comment of you running a 6.84 as I have searched everywhere to find out more info about this car and always turned up nothing.
Can you prove that you have done this in any way or was it done at a "Private Track"?
I never lived in the basement moron. I come from an upper middle class family and we do not live in basements. Quit comparing me with you (which obviously comes from a more "common" upbringing.
@NITROROTARY Wow dude, aji8 is a faggot troll who has no life, no vehicles, and hates on rotaries because he can't afford to get one above stock. Don't even answer him, for he is an idiot.
LOL, you are an idiot if you believe that. Rotary engines are replaced with piston engines after they blow up. Get a clue. Rotary is NOT solidly built, nor powerful with the 13B having about 150 h.p. You are an idiot.
@aji8 Wankels only have 2 moving parts. Their combustion chambers are solid. Tha apex and side seals are tougher that the connecting rods in pistons. Piston engines shoot rods. Wankels dont explode. The Wankel design also has been around 50 years later than pistons. Wankels make a lot of power when tuned correctly. 13bt's make up to 700 hp in really suped up configurations. You sir, are a narcalieptic liar with no credibility that mudslings and has no facts.
Wrong moron. You can't even properly count the few moving parts the Wanker engine has. Try again idiot. Apex seals are weak and constantly ruin (plenty of vids on youtube), coolant seals ruin, engine loses compression, housing surfaces wear. You have no credibility as you can't even count. Get lost idiot
allow me to remind you that pistons have rings and crank shaft bearings. these are subject to wear, as are cams and valves that have too much carbon buildup. A Wankel relies on simplicity and eliminates the need for cams and valves, while producing 3 power-strokes per revolution! You need to re-learn you engine mechanics again buddy. So go back to your basement and work on your pathetic v8 rx7. At least the car was unique for having a rotary at one time or another..
The only thing that you remind me of is that is that rotary enthusiasts (rotards) not only have weak arguments against piston engines but really don't know much about cars. I am aware of all this but even with far fewer parts the rotary still manages to ruin and get replaced with a piston engine.
Yeah so you guys keep saying. Yet I still see them in various shops that I frequent. They aren't that great and falling way behind the piston. I guess that is why the Wanker engine is not used in many cars...it is junk.
WRONG idiot. The UK is already considering banning them by 2015 for poor fuel economy and emissions...YOU FAIL! LOL The rotary is on its way out for poor operation, and you poor rotards are still living in dreamland.
@aji8 Ahem, first id like to ask you to stop the shouting in the middle of your paragraphs. Second of all I'd like to repeat "It is 50 years younger that the piston and still hasn't been perfected." third of all you have a single track mind that loops back to the "YOU FAIL! LOL" so I'm going to save my time and tell you to fuck off. You may now go and make love to your v8 rx7.
Ahem, don't repeat your idiotic statements. Since the rotary is newer it has the benefit of newer technologies including factory improvements and machining. Don't keep making excuses for the failed rotary junk. The rotary will NOT be perfected as its failure is inherent in its design idiot. If you acutally knew anything you would realize that. You already got it wrong moron as there are also bearings and seals. Both have major issues helping the engine to be more unreliable than its piston counterpart that has more parts. You are an idiot if you think that just because an engine has more parts that it is more easily prone to failure. OHC engines are just as reliable as OHV engines but have more moving parts. You just screwed up idiot.
@aji8 ok i dont know where you get off calling bearings and seals moving parts. Im talking about rods and valves that a wankel has no need for. Either way.. proper run= no seal prob. Seals do not break of melt. They are 2024 aluminum as piston rings are. The seals on a Wankel are fine, its the fuel economy that' s the problem. Wankels are the most inefficient engines to be used. I agree with you that they do not belong in cars and trucks, but little ones are nice for go karts and rc planes.
Haha Rotors don't blowup!! They have few moving parts and the ecentric shafts are really solid. all that could happen is it drops a rotor seal or bearing. Shame you don't build a 26B quad rotor like in australia and new zealand. Those things do 6's without nitro methane in half chassis. Just get yourself a ecentric shaft made up and build the rest yourself. easy as!!
@NITROROTARY Hi, by any chance would you have an video of a full pass of the car. and would you have an working website where we can obtain data of this particular car. Many thanks in Advance, greetings.
how so??? you can rev the piss out of it and it takes quite a bit of boost!!! my not be the fastest but it will smoke most v8,car's, trucks, ect!! any car you build to drag is gonna explode one day!! at least he did something differnt!
I never ever had any problem with the engine or the car it was in. I simply said it was a reciepe for an explosion because it revs so high and it has nitro methane fuel and looking at the blower it has on it at least makes 20lbs of boost or more. I didn't even say anything bad about the engine. Now stop twisting all of the words in my comment and enjoy the video.
come on man u gota show the run i cant wait to see this thing the new genration of rotary drag racing love it, people with the time and effort congrates guys love love it

Running nitro in a rotary. This set-up will be lucky to make it halfway down the track!
LOL

What does this thing weigh and do you have any video of it running the 1/4?
RIPSNZ 2 years ago
Haha Rotors don't blowup!! They have few moving parts and the ecentric shafts are really solid. all that could happen is it drops a rotor seal or bearing. Shame you don't build a 26B quad rotor like in australia and new zealand. Those things do 6's without nitro methane in half chassis. Just get yourself a ecentric shaft made up and build the rest yourself. easy as!!

Fuck, It's cool but it's a recipe for an explosion lol.
NakedStick 2 years ago
@NakedStick
how so??? you can rev the piss out of it and it takes quite a bit of boost!!! my not be the fastest but it will smoke most v8,car's, trucks, ect!! any car you build to drag is gonna explode one day!! at least he did something differnt!
20PsiNow 2 years ago
I never ever had any problem with the engine or the car it was in. I simply said it was a reciepe for an explosion because it revs so high and it has nitro methane fuel and looking at the blower it has on it at least makes 20lbs of boost or more. I didn't even say anything bad about the engine. Now stop twisting all of the words in my comment and enjoy the video.

This is such a beast. I'm dying for more info. Has it run down the 1/4 or is it purely an experimental design at this stage?
Best of luck with it.
