I have to admit, when I heard the chorus of this song on the Chevy Truck "Apocalypse" ad during the Super Bowl, I laughed out loud! It seemed so perfect! :-)
@BryonThePoet feck off and leave Barry alone, he is not gay and Barry didn't write Mandy so get your facts right before you start insulting people that you do not know. Moron, and no I don't know you but I wouldn't want to.
i just realized after reading this cmmnt this song was playing in the chevy apocalypse commercial but thts not y i found this song my gpa in gma use to jam to it im 17 in they still had casettes of him tht they played i used to think it was stupid till i got older and my gma died in this is how i remember her a women dieing of cancer but didnt use it as an excuse in one day when i get to heaven to see her i know this song will be playing
@BryonThePoet Actually he didn't write Mandy, it was written by Scott English and Richard Kerr. That being said, Barry took it and made it into something extraordinarily magical. His interpretation of it is far, far more beautiful than the original, and is much better. He certainly deserves credit for that...and you're right. His sexual orientatioin is so unimportant. I can't believe people still consider that sort of thing "newsworthy"...seriously !
@1961gj Actually most people back than thought he was, but it was just not talked about. It was a out of respect and not really wanting to know the truth, same with Freddy Mercury and other famous people of that era. Not saying it was right or wrong, it was just the way it was and in a way it let people's private lives remain just that instead of the must know everything era we live in now. I kinda wish we could go back to the more simple time in some ways. I guess us older people feel that. :)
Barry manilow has got to be one of the Best Romantic Writers, of these times ,in no one have i ever seem , such a fine Musical Talent and a veracious., Talent know to no one song writer, he has left a dent on the Time's , like these that n o other person , who has this kind of talent can muster up, And to this day there will never ever be another Barry Manilow !
Why is it some people just never find their true love he has so much to offer someone and yet i don,t think he has a special love and yet i feel i will never find that special someone ether but i am strong i will just keep living my life and hope that someday that i find my special love.
@Bronson1886 - no kiddin..but sometimes we have to expose ourselves more and also although he is great singer and feels the music - does not mean he does not issues of trust and believing in love..One thing is to sing the expression of love and the love of being on stage but to do it in person everyday with that special someone and also someone who has to deal with him being on the road every minute - woman who throw themselves - I wouldnt date a woman who was person in this career.I know myself
@rhdtv2002 very true what you said but it is too bad a person like that who has so much to offer doesnt have that right person by his side and why is it most of the amazing people like Barry Manilow also never have kids it is a shame he has so much to offer i think he would make a great dad.
@vm24seven365 I was wrong in thinking that his live performance wouldn't be as great as the studio version - it is different but his powerful voice is so good it doesn't need to be augmented!!
it was 1977 and i went to Ridmar Mall in Fort worth. I walked up the spiral staircase to the record store. I bought two Lp's that day. The Star Wars lp and this one. OMG ! I still have both of them in a box, in a van down by the river. but OMG, I love this song. I've been a musical nut bag since. I know every freak'n top forty song from 1968-1999. LOOKS LIKE ME MADE IT !!!!! LOL ! wow . super ! (damn i sound like a geek- sue me)
@ahfaxthis totaly agree with you..I have just turned 60 but in my heart (music wise) I am still living in the 60's. Where have all the years gone..Alison
@ahfaxthis you're NOT a geek. The fact that this one song from that era can generate this much memory is a testimony to what art/music is all about. I honestly cannot say my generation will be able to say the same thing 20-30 years from now about "musicians", lol today
2:40 - Just the way he whacks the microphone release with his left hand and grabs the mike with the other hand is just smooth as hell! The consummate showman.
When I asked my father in law for his permission to marry my wife, he asked me one question... "Do you have any old girlfriends youre going to leave my daughter for?" That was 20 years ago... I thought about all those old girlfriends, and said no.. 20 years later, this song makes me think about them, but I would STILL never trade her for them.
Genius. I saw him live when I was just a kid. It was back in the 70's. It was hauntingly beautiful. I consider myself lucky to have been able to see him live - especially back then when he was just a nervous "kid."
IThere is a silver lining to these "immature " antics and that is the through the music of Manilow where I learn love and romance, incidently this song I believe was No, 1, on the charts in '76.
