  • Many, if not all cases of bicupid aorta are part of a syndrome. Other symptoms include coarctation (a narrowing) of the aorta, aortic aneurism, and problems with aneurisms in the brain and neck. In some cases at least, it is a problem with the microfibril protein fibrillin-1. Also, close relatives of individuals with bicuspid aorta may be at risk for some of these other symptoms, but have a tricuspid valve.

  • Actually, 80% of patients with coarctation of the aorta, also present with bicuspid AOV. Not the other way around...

  • What about coarctation of the aorta? It is an associated condition with bicuspid aortic valves 80-85% of the time!
