  • I don't understand people who say he can't sing - Beefheart's got an amazing primal blues voice!...

  • I suppose he was to music what Salvador Dali was to painting.

  • Colorful words used to put it right in the establishment face; like a 'Back at Yeh' Brilliant way for sure. LOVE the melody and lyrics of TRUTH. :-))) Thanks Beefheart for telling it like IT IS.. All of us today speaking truth are called weird too and loony to boot. What a Hoot. OMG I became a poet too. :-))) LOVE you Dear Music making BEing of love. TO the angel that shared this tune. LOVE to you too. Yep. cannot run away from love; it is allll around you; Yep and in tunes like this.;-)))

  • This dude was a true artist.

  • i am sorry guys ... for me this person cannot sing ...

  • @garganeo It's not his singing that makes him good, I think he sings horrible as well. But it's his originality, the way he just makes the music WORK. The stuff he made would be a miserable mess if it was performed by somebody else, Beefheart was brilliant because he gave it a certain form of structure.

That's why he is respected and enjoyed by many people, including me!

  • @garganeo not in the way you've been programmed to believe is singing.

  • how the fuck can you say 'Moonbeams' was a 'sell out ' lp,

you sound like a music journo, ie dumb.

  • I love Beefheart's music first and foremost. The fact that he still polarises opinion about himself is just the icing on the cake. Nothing quite like enjoying something and someone starts whining "This is crap. It's just nooiise". There, there. Go back to listening to something safe and linear.

  • When he's good, he's good. When he's bad, he's oh so bad. This is definitely NOT one of his better performances.

  • @JaZzure79

    This crap is just noise.

    Annoying shitty noise.

I was 20 when Zappa declared Beefheart to be really innovative, the new thing, etc.

I liked The Mothers and zappa, but I always thought BeefheART WAS crap.

40 years ago all the sheep said Oh So Kewl don't you get Beefheart?

It's The Emperor's New Clothes fairy tale in modern times, nobody can tell me they like this shit.

  • @Blahblobify CB was bored with the inauthentic, pedestrian blues/rock of Clapton; The Stones; The Who, etc., which were infecting the airwaves at that time. He wanted to avoid the same old shit and succeeded. But he dove too deeply into the surrealist/abstract end of the inspiration pool, and tried sounding like he was black and from Mississippi, but he was white and born in CA. Only his studio output is worth listening to. Zappa's music IQ was higher, but his pretentious chamber music sucks.

  • @JaZzure79

Candy Coat it any way you want, this shit is just no fun to listen to.

Fuck Captain Beefheart, I'd rather listen to the monkees than this annoying crap.

I was in a no talent garage band in the 60's we sounded better than this asshole.

  • @Blahblobify

theres no need to candy coat it, i honestly like safe as milk. One of my favourite albums.I also think his "sell out albums" Unconditionally Guaranteed and moonbeams had some great tracks on them and that trout mask replica was shite.People gotta stop reading reviews and then listening to albums with already formed opinions. I found beefheart through zappa and i dont think hes the "best ever OMG " , i just like some of his music.

  • @Dincilo

As Jimmy Carl Black once put it: Frank is good but Captain Beefeart is the real deal

  • @Blahblobify Dont you know that at the closing of Winterland in SF Friday night the crowd was filled with people just like you..as they threw bottles and such at him as he opened with Hair Pie which is a tune YOU could not dance to. Shame on you was in fact what Frank Zappa said to the crowd as Beefheart was going to walk off the stage....He stayed , music brilliant..then Zappa ..brilliant....You must work for Warner Bros. or have that flu going around.

  • This is really terrible in my opinion.Horrible singing, and just plain wierd.Had to be different.Same as an ugly fat girl dying her hair purple and a hundred piercings in her face.Needing to be noticed,to stand out.gross.

  • @green66vw you are a complete idiot. If the magic band and others like them hadn't been "different" then most modern music wouldn't exist. Needing to write a negative comment because you dont understand creativity. foolish.

  • @TheStuF agreed. its not a great song but beefheart an important part of music history.

  • @TheStuF there is nothing musical about this.the emphasis of the band is obviously on stupid outrageus lyrics.to surprise and agast people.ill be fair about it though, ill check some other stuff out at random and see if anything good MUSICALLY comes from this band.by the way, even ther song titles are meant to be wierd and catchy.to be cool.

  • @green66vw Aren't you doing the same by going against the popular opinion on a video for an artist with a cult following?

  • He was only visiting this planet...

  • "I may be hungry but I sure ain't weird," as he dropps the flag to the floor. That speaks volumes to me. Look at the wierdos that have infiltrated and subverted our country, world. They are turning it into a burned out waste land. If you don't agree with them, if you speak out, you will go hungry, soon, and be called a wierdo to boot. The Captian was dialed in. There is complete, ulimate reality in his poetry. Just because you can't find it, means you are not dialed in.

    So turn your dial.

  • I'm unsafe beef-stew thrown up the wall at 1mph

  • I don't get it. Overall, it sounds disturbing and distorted but he gets points for originality.

/Maybe it sounds awesome on a drug trip?

  • @theprophet556 Take a listen to the Trout Mask Replica album and figure it out! Safe as Milk is for starters...

  • his music wil still live on,he was a big captain of music and paint art

  • But, any cover, or attempt will be tribute ! ! !

    Please musical brother/sisters cover ! ! !

  • But, any cover, or attempt will be tribute ! ! ! Please musical brother/sisters cover ! ! !

  • I may be hungry but I sure ain't weird.

C.B.'s music will still be listened to in a hundred years' time.

  • Man he got aggravated and pissed at 1:13 over that dollar store quality mic :0

  • @lamccaugh I don't think it was the mic as much as it was the dumb ass at the mixing board that didn't have the lead vocal mic potted to the proper volume.

  • @lamccaugh ahahaha yeah!

  • This is why I love YouTube.....

  • In 50 years the Beatles will be a minor footnote in pop history, Don Van Vliet will be a chapter.

  • @reassessment Yeah, that's right, you're okay. Stop eating acid! The Beatles just a footnote, uh-huh, only a moron would make such a comment. I love Don Van Vliet and I love Captain Beefheart, two different entities, great talent, but throwing the Beatles under a bus is just fucking dumb.

  • His hand movements in his performances are cool. They always seemed to never change throughout his career. He looks like he's throwing something out to the world with each note he sings with the hand movements, and really knew the importance of them in emphasizing what you say.

  • watching this video i can't help but thinking that lemmy souns a lot like the "captain" sometimes, no disrespect to the captain..

  • @unplugged6432 Tom Waits sounds a ton like Beefheart..

  • @omegant Yeah, I found Beefheart because I heard that he had influenced a lot of Tom Waits later material.

    Thank you Tom Waits!

  • Excellent stuff! Where can I get this live show on DVD?

  • I just got Trout Mask Replica, and read the story behind it, and now I'm fucking terrified of Mr. Beefheart.. in a good way...

He basically kept the band in a house for 8 months, they did not get enough food or sleep, they were emotionally and physically abused, and they rehearsed at least 14 hrs a day. It's like... literally a "cult band".

  • I hate to see the the name of captain beefheart associated to frank zappa. beefheart is much betterr man

  • @calligraphish when CB retired, Waits came out with his1st' other persona' album - swordfish trombones.

Althoough Waits is great, i think he's a bit contrived!

  • @hounddig waits= contrived. couldnt agree more. still some great songs though

  • Love Beefheart, but you can't put shame on "The Dude."

  • abazabba

  • Sound mans going to get an earfull

  • At flowerdoodle, how would you like if someone is to say to you that you been dead for 25yrs old? Respect and never speak ill of the dead.. Peas andlight to the captain, my captain

  • @Nimaz99 My apologies good sir or ma'am. I love the captain too. I just meant he hasnt been making music for 25 years, and had been very hidden and withdrawn from public eye, so its almost as if he were dead in a sense. I love his paintings too and am happy he did what he wanted and got out of the crazy music biz scene

  • At flowerdoodle, how would you like if someone is to say to you that you been dead for 25yrs old? Respect and never speak ill of the dead.. Peas andlight to the captain, my captain

  • REST IN PEACE

  • Ok folks, no more "Captain my Captain" allusions please ;) He's been dead for 25 years. Yeah he was special, but let's not do the mythologizing, romanticizing, sanctimony thing.

  • @flowerdoodle DICK!

  • @servant2069 What? What I say?? Im just sayin...

  • @flowerdoodle how would you like if someone was to say to you that you been dead for 25 yrs? Do not judge and do not speak ill of one who has passed on.. we all grow old someday and we all die. Have some respect . Peas and light to the Captain!

  • Such a shame that there aren't more peolpe around like Beefheart! The world would be a much better place!

  • @Abracadab5 There is Tom Waits!

  • @Abracadab5 ever been to a buckethead show?

  • capptain you was the best by far , stay cool man xx

  • Another Legend Dead

  • goodbye, i love you Don

  • RIP Don. I won't forget you.

  • Fast is fast; slow is slow. Do the low low low low yo-yo. Go well, my captain!

  • R.I.P.Captain.

  • I dig this more than all the recorded versions! Thanks for the music, Don, you touched so many, many lives. Rest in atonal noise.

  • Weird being on a planet without him.

(And that band played the living shit outta that song)

  • @willbond It is

  • A time for celebration.

  • Thanks, Don.

  • The precursor to Rollins???

  • @goodbyebluesky1000 Ah, you think so, too? I was just thinking of "Drink and Drive" this morning. Beefheart influenced a lot of later Gen X music...Rollins, hardcore punk, Husker Du, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, yadda yadda...

  • Sourly your soul roams. devoted then demoted, a voice and then a paint brush.

Both so lush and lavish, a true genius

    Rest In Peace.

  • The GREAT CAPTAIN BEEFHEART set the music standard ultra high and into another cosmo for all that follow....

  • spasmelodic tripped up hiccups

iconoclasp tickled born free jazz now gone

goes dancin down some other halls

    like some haiku jedi knight

    R.I.P.

  • Skvělé!!!!!Měj se tam dobře a pozdravuj Franka.

  • Another nail in the coffin of great music - music with real soul - music created by musicians. I feel blessed that I remember a time when people were respected for their musical ability, for creative songwriting, for pushing boundaries rarther than pushing units.

I feel sorry for the youth of today, who will never know that feeling of hearing music like this - rushing out and buying the album - that thrill as the needle came down on the vinyl with that satisfying "pumph" noise.

  • @Ziontie1971 devolution is a reality

  • R.I.P. Captain Beefheart. I'm glad I once saw you and I'll never forget.

  • Will be missed.

  • R.I.P Captain!

    we will never forget you.

  • One of the absolute all time great original musical talents of the 20th century.

"Quietly the rain played down on the last of the ashes" R.I.P. Cap'n B.

  • I'm just so saddened at the news of his death... just got into a massive Beefheart kick and the timing now seems so prophetic, like those who really need to hear his art actually do. A precious gift to us all from a true genius. RIP sweet Captain.

  • RIP

  • I take my hat of to you, God`s Speed, Captain!

  • Great

  • A dear friend's brother died a few days ago. The day after, my friend went through the Ipod his brother had left behind, and found that a track with Beefheart and Zappa was his favourite. I attended the funeral today. Coming home, I learned about the Captain's death. So sad, but on the other hand, it gives an occasion for celebrating all the good memories he has given.

  • Yep,R.I.P. ,Don

  • RIP Captain ........ You'll never be forgotten in this house

  • RIP Capitano. The upstairs orchestra just got even better.

  • RIP Good Captain. I love you you big dummy.

  • i m obsessed by the captain for years.

  • Sheer utter genius.......

  • I hadn't realised Captain Beefheart also doubles up as Tom Selleck

  • Nobody will ever be able to do covers of Beefheart and Zappa songs that even approach the genius of the originals. This is a testament to these legendary musician's talent.

  • @Rasputin22January That isn't true. Zappa does zappa is doing a hell of a job. That said many of the mothers are there.

  • @Polybun I stand by my statement. Nobody, including Frank's son, could even come near the unique one-of-a-kind phrasing found in Franks guitar solos. You can copy the notes but you can't copy Frank. Also you can assemble Frank's musicians but you need Frank's genius to guide them and to make the true magic happen. Frank Zappa is gone and there is a void that cannot and will never be filled.

  • @Rasputin22January nor does the void need to be filled. He's dead, so what? lets move on.

  • @Polybun I wasn't saying the void needed to be filled, I was saying it can't be filled. People that try to play Franks music such as Zappa Plays Zappa, are trying to fill a perceived need. You like the band as much as you like Zappa, but you say that they don't need to exist. I agree, let's move on.

  • @Rasputin22January well i find zappa's cover bands playing pretty similar to zappa's music- not as good, but not that bad... but for beefheart's music i personally can't think of way to play the song as good as magic band did... every fckin' note has it's own charm of the song, playing something different would just ruin the song...

  • @Rasputin22January Check out some Zappa plays Zappa, (Dwezil & former Mothers). Great stuff!

  • @Rasputin22January lol dweezil does quite a gewd job

  • Ah, an artist like this comes along every fifty years or so.

Unfortunately I don't see anyone out there ready to replace him.

He had a gift and got as much of it to us as he could afford.

It came at a steep price and its going to take a couple hundred years for

    it to sink in.

    bbcart1

  • When I first heard and immediately fell in love with Trout Mask Replica, I just assumed they were all improvising like Ornette Coleman, but when I heard them play live, I nearly fell off the theater seat because they played all that complex and asymmetrical music note-for-note like the record!! Unbelievable!!! (Later I read about the cult-like situation they practiced under, and it made more sense -- total mind control!) The Captain's music grabs the ear like Francis Bacon's art grabs the eye.

  • I don't know, but Don's final words holding the flag sent a chill down my spine...

Saw the band in Pittsburgh around 1970 or so, when they gave us a double show because Miles Davis didn't show up (as usual) -- this is one of the great experiences of my life. First Rockette Morton's double guitar dancing around, then other players one by one appear on stage, and finally a spotlight on the caped Captain, casting spells on the players like a wizard. Unforgettable. His music cuts through the crap!!

  • beefheart is the best!

  • @ "theseustoo": Wrong! Listen to Bongo Fury ;-).

  • @FleeingFingers I did say 'so far as I'm aware'... my awareness has now been expanded thanks to your good self; I shall indeed, immediately sally forth and listen to 'Bongo Fury'... Or at least, I'll check it out tomorrow; getting a bit late now...

One thing I'm sure of though, it'll be absofrigginlutely fantrippingtastic!

    ;)

  • Frank Zappa and Don Van Vliet are two of the best musos to come out of the US of A... So far as I'm aware they only appear together on one track, from Zappa's 'Hot Rats' album, called, "Willie the Pimp"... What a classic that was!

    :)

  • @theseustoo also the song tiger roach

  • Strontium 90, a radioactive substance, which was found in milk at/before the time this was written was the inspiration for, at least, the name of this incredible song.

  • @maureenobrien no shit!

  • @stevom31 no shit

  • Captain Beefheart is certainly One of a Kind> Some people may not like it or appreciated but the more you really listen to it the more you like it, it kinda grows on you. One of the best ever and one of my very favorites. Long live to Captain Beefheart !!!

  • never any standard drumbeats is there

  • that's one of things that makes this song kick ass

  • '' I may be hungry but I sure ain't weird. ''

  • selling vacum cleaners in the desert has really fucked this dude up! great ! if he hadnt done that job we wouldnt have Beefheart , long live vacumm cleaner salesmen

  • Fast n bulbous is the greatest utterance of all human history. (bulbous also tapered)

  • The Captain lifts everyone higher ...

  • i love this man.. he is genious...

    from indonesia..

  • here is music that animals may also appreciate

  • @jackhillty1 My turtle prefers to hear it with the earphones ON

  • The drums and bass in his music is amazing

  • i have loved the Don for many years - Great to see so many vids these days :)

  • unique sounding group !

    captain is genious !

  • kids the raose as milk wonadayse alldte daisyes call teh dayhs

  • The ending was priceless.

  • this sounds a lot like 70's devo. i like that.

  • @tomfrankly

    besides the vocals that is

  • @freespeech4u2 well his scratchy voice doesn't sound like devo but the singing style does.

  • To Michele:

Fuck God. For what has he brought us but our fall?

  • @Israfvel

donuts. he has brought us jam centered donuts!

  • Wau, first time I see him live! I have listened to the vinyl album for 35 years then the CD for 5 years. -and yes, it´s still alternative !

  • The Captain is the Greatest of all time second only to GOD!!!

    -Michele

  • @michelesaintthomas He can very well be, though Gods name is Arthur Lee! You know... The one who provided us with LOVE! ... and Jerry Lee Lewis the devil, and Elvis the King, and so on...

  • Captain Beefheart is cult!

  • haha 2:25 tickle tickle

  • I love the way how the song so seamlessly changes into something totally different, especially the bass line. The transmission is so beautifully done, reaching a crescendo with - I may be hungry but i sure ain*t weird!!! Brilliant!

  • he sure is wierd , thank fuck

  • cheers for these. Brilliant

  • Wow. I sure don't need drugs or beer to have a good time when I listen to Captain Beefheart! Thankyou!!!!

  • hahaha .. i was thinkin the same thing myself.

  • @sbyrne1 agreed, but we are normal. Some heroes are off their heads as a normal way the chemicals work.An edge is what us lesser mortals need.I wonder what the world looked like through Vliets eyes?

  • @sbyrne1 who needs'em? they're sure damn sure fun, surely they are

  • @sbyrne1 shouldn't need drugs anyway

  • @sbyrne1 I totally agree. Drugs are bad. Pass the joint.

  • @sbyrne1

    no, because you're already retarded

  • I believe he would like his vocal amp moved up a bit boys....better get on it.

  • ....also ( forgot to mention this on my first post). Look for the 1:12 mark. He's not making strange comedy gestures. This was recorded back when the monitor man was the same as the sound-man. Monitor speakers are on the stage & face the musicians so they can hear themselves sing. Gotta keep in tune. He's pointing at his monitor person & gesturing for Mr. Soundman to-turn-it-the-hell-up!

  • Captain Beefheart is thoroughly entertaining. I tell people who do not understand his music that it is an "acquired" taste. I didn't even like his Trout Mask Replica album on my first 2 listens. Bring the Captain back!

  • Acquired? Most certainly not - you can like Beefheart's oeuvre right away, if you've doused yourself in a lot of blues and jazz, especially the really far-out ones.

  • Captain B is such a versitle artist,He can funk it,delta blues it,garage rock/protopunk or experimental jazz/blues with amazing lyrics/poetry,he pisses on these artists today!!!!

  • We should follow el Captain to the end of the universe.

Sheer unadulterated essence of original genius.

  • you are right. Don't know any other artist this versatile- this is a stupendous performance, i saw this line-up live- As for great music- i believe most people in our culture can't handle it, sadly- they love their chart tunes and that's all

  • a desert shaman/mystic.....

    4 octave incantations.....

    beyond impressionistic.....

  • Art is the last refuge of resistance....Beefheart is a mighty fortress.

The cure for superstition and boredom....

  • Man, I hope that sound guy turned the monitor up for him. (see 1:14)

  • what a vocalist

  • WEEN, like owes a huge debt to Capt. Beef.

They pretty much copied their style and expounded on it.

I love WEEN, I'm not knocking them.

  • shit grows on you

  • Cheese in the corner, with a mile long beard...
