I'm not even sure there was a consensus of the lyrics to Carnival at the time of this performance, and definitely not on the studio version from Chronic Town.
The band can't remember the music or words half the time anyhow. Sometimes they have to ask the audience the words. Like one time they couldn't remember how many times Mike and Bill sang 'house in order' on Wolves so they asked the audience. To me it's obvious when there are 4 band members! Driver 8 is one of my top 5 all time fave REM songs. I have to listen to it driving to a certain city because there are orange floaters on the power lines and it reminds me of' this song.
@BorgKing001 Why are you going around posting this on every REM video on youtube? If you were really that put off by Michael's sexual orientation I doubt you'd be seeking out videos to post the same thing over and over. Methinks thou doth protest too much... if you know what I mean.
@HagerTX I don't miss the eighties, and am still young as a result. Mass culture reached an all-time low, hen image finally won out over substance (ditto politics). Thankfully, that also spawned a host of excellent underground "college rock" bands, partly because of the young people who went back to school and that because the economy sucked so badly. Anyone who glorifies "the eighties" must have bought the ad they ran. I also don't miss R.E.M. because they're still here, back to life.
During the eighties, I was age 7 to 17. I do reminisce now and then about my childhood including bands that were up and coming at the time, especially REM. So my statement about the eighties has more to do with childhood memories. Although REM is still together, they aren't cranking out quality music like they did prior to 1995, plus they hardly ever tour. So although they're "still here", they are not here in any meaningful form.
@HagerTX Didn't mean to piss on your childhood/youth. Sounds like you spent it well. I thought Monster was their first iffy album and they seemed to coast (or worse) for more than a decade. But the last two albums were very solid all the way through. It sucks they don;t tour much, but making good music is meaningful. (The Beatles didn't tour at all for the last half of their career - and made their best music.)
@GregDrayGregDray Actually In understand he never really drank. Buck, Mills and Berry drank beer in the back of the tour bus while Stipe read books and drank milk in the front.
