LOL, uhm I think I will go w/out a bustle. Or make a small one that you can wear on the outside. WhitneySews dida tutorial for that and It was so easy, She was thinking Mideval but Steampunk is perfect. I will have to start hitting thrift stores for corsets. Do you think I would have better luck at a vintage store? I think vintage may be pricey but mmm could make it an adventure anyway. I am not looking for a "true" corset. Just a costume piece. All and All you both did awesome. Thanks.
Can someone link me to a good site to get aviator goggles like the one mentioned in accessorizing with scarves? Those are the ones I'm going crazy trying to find!!!
I havent chected the sites you mentioned, But do you recommend a place to buy Gibuses and Tophats for men to match the style? I have a brown pinstripe suit that makes a decent steampunk base, But without a matching gibus, it just doesn't look right. i'm sure theer are others who'd want a professional opinion as well.
I like how you described your thoughts on what Steampunk actually "is". :) I have trouble explaining it to people who haven't heard of it before. I usually end up saying something to the effect of it's old west meets gears and lots of copper and gold color accents. LOL I think it can be so much more then just that though. But still - I always start with the old western patterns as a base for my own work and move on from there. Ty for posting this video! I enjoyed watching it very much. :D
@brilliantsplash Well actually I wouldn't know what I thought until I watched the video... It's cool though I'm going to a Steampunk festival soon. I can't wait to find other balanced people there.
@osmosys808 That's awesome. You did come across as one of those people that comment on videos just to get a reaction though. What you see is what you get for Steampunk. The style is geeky and retro. You should go to that steampunk festival and show people your rendition of the style, and maybe that will help you better understand your own interests.
@osmosys808 Everyone looks awkward at conventions, especially when there's a amera shoved in their faces. Hold a steampunk costume party with people you actually know. The costumes might not be as elaborate, but it'll be ten times more fun, and you won't have the awkward nerdy vibe.
@brokennarcissist um... by commenting on something you know nothing about? You know there are girl steampunkers too, right? I'm assuming they can have kinky victorian sex with each other.
@gurumiarmy No, you don't. You can just create channels with straight stitching, for inserting elastic or ribbon. One the elastic is in or the ribbon is pulled, the channels will contract and create the ruching.
@jermboy171 Hey, some people think Psychobilly looks stupid and is a waste of energy. The thing is that style is a personal preference and while some like 50s Wannabe stuff, others like Victorian wannabe stuff! If it means something to you and you love it it's not a waste nor "geeky." That is the joy of our freedom of fashion identity!
@jermboy171 Why do YOU waste everyone's time by watching these videos just so that you can complain and insult the people who ARE interested in this and find it worthwhile.
For the bustle, what kind of wire would you suggest in particular? I've been looking for a good wire that's strong and will be able to support a heavy skirt.
Word of advice: If you are going to make the bustle cage, do NOT try it with wire coathangers. I had blisters on my fingers for weeks, and I think I will have arthritis before my eighteenth birthday.
This reminds of the Wild Wild West movie starring Will Smith & Kevin Kline. That movie was cool & so is yall outfits & some of the ether things iv seen; weird but cool.
I've seen people do steampunk in t-shirts with Victorian hats and acessories, so does it stand to reason that any era that occured AFTER steam power was invented, is fair game for steampunk?
steampunk is a "what if" kind of thing. Basically look at it this way: What if Victorian technology, styles and sensibilities continued on into the future (now or even further), shake a little science fiction on it, then apply it to everyday objects that we have now. That's a very simplified way of looking at it but you get the idea.
@rodiansinger you dont have to wear a corset in order to be steampunk. the rule of thumb i think for just about any style is make it your own, and any tutorials or instructions are simply guidelines. try vests, or sometimes just a steampunk style shirt without anything over it can look good. keep trying on diffrent things until you feel comfortable about what your wearing. good luck!

Someone asked Rob to stop using an English accent, I want to ask that you stop having corrine Act demeaning toward men.
@houseoflordsferus@houseoflordsferus You obviously haven't seen the women in Korea. I'm always amazed how so many men in America think being hated is hot.
@houseoflordsferus Women in Korea on average treat men with more respect than in America (more like equals). They don't go around saying men are dumb or less mature or any of that crap you hear in America. And when they like a guy, they show it. Sorry, your comment sounded American. @TheAwesomeEclipse I can respect that if you would feel the same way if the gender roles were reversed. I can laugh off a lot of things when double standards aren't involved.
I don't understand the entire Steam Punk thing, but I've always loved the look. I think it's awesome! I probably don't have time to make a costume for Halloween, but Halloween shouldn't be an excuse to have one haha
@SquirrelyLilBugger steampunk appears as a literary movement based on the ideas and writings of jules vern and becomes a fashion movement...essentially what would have been, had nano technology occured during the late victorian steam era...so skip over gasoline and oil based products such as plastics and rayons....keep with victorian materials such as copper and cotton and leathers...and dream of how space travel, air travel, basic human evolution would have occured instead....that is steampunk
@Vampkiki But the very idea of a raygun, or at least these types of raygun, which is unavailable to us in the present and wont be around until the real future is not a step back in technology. It it technology which exceeds us in the present.
Why did you just define Steampunk for me? I know very well what it is.
@SquirrelyLilBugger one the idea of a raygun was written in the books i refered to (20,000 leagues under the sea); two it is the probable evolution of it... and three i responded to where you asked what it was...and finally four ray variations are in at least experimental stages as of right now (aka we making x-ray technologies into smaller weapon usage)...its like saying laser guns from star wars are impossible...yet we actually have those...
@Vampkiki Yeah. Next thing we know, the death star is really being built?
Technology that efficient does not exist nowadays. Just because it was dreamt up in the past, does not mean the idea is a step back in technology. Cavemen probably dreamt of flying before pirates did. I guess you think cavemen being able to fly would be inferior to pirate technology, despite pirates being unable to fly.
@SquirrelyLilBugger lazers being used to pinpoint cancers and yes you can literally cook a human brain after ten minutes of x-ray exposure;leading to the military to want to use both items as weapons.doesn't mean every person has one in their house;but just because not everyone even has a phone or 9 mm gun in their house doesn't mean they don't believe that such items exist. The raygun being included in the costumes is because it was in the books. Real to you or not..it was based on the books.
@Vampkiki No matter how many times I clarify the point I'm arguing, you don't seem to understand me, so I'll keep it as simple as humanly possible.
My issue with the original comment was that they implied that any idea thought up in the past, is inferior technology to whatever is in the present. You should understand that this is complete bullshit. Steampunk Rayguns do not exist in the present. Similar technology sure, but not anything that functions the same way. IE: weaponised laser device.
@SquirrelyLilBugger no i clarified the basic idea of steampunk theory...i never said i thought or agreed with an idea that modern technology was in any way inferior to past technologies....
@Vampkiki Then why the actual fuck did you reply to me in the first place?
I wasn't talking about theory at all, I was pointing out a flaw in someone's logic. Then you fly in and define Steampunk to me, for some pointless reason. Despite the fact I already know what Steampunk is and where it originates.
1 week ago" How are raygun designs going back exactly? I don't get it."
explaining the entire theory of steampunk based on books that use rayguns is how it is going back exactly...just to point out the flaw in your logic. and there is no need for foul language
@Vampkiki And did you read what I replied to? Or did you just guess? These particular raygun designs are far superior to our current ones. Logically, that means they were going forward with their designs, not back.
@Vampkiki They deleted it because I WAS RIGHT! Their theorising that the rayguns in these videos are a step back from our current prototypes was sheer nonsense.
@SquirrelyLilBugger you were clearly asking a question not answering one- " How are raygun designs going back exactly? I don't get it." see the question mark ....that means question....not answer.
and these comment boxes are for anyone to comment or answer...otherwise if your so touchy...use and instant message to the specfic intended receiver.
@Vampkiki Hahah, anyone who knew the context of the question would realise; there is no answer to it. This makes it: A rhetorical question. One in which the answer is implied. And that answer is 'no'. The fact that the original comment got removed only inspired confused people like yourself to try and help, where help was not needed.
@SquirrelyLilBugger as opposed to people like you who are so confused that they intentionally ask an answerable question only to instagate others in an open forum so that you can try to impose a dominance issue on strangers? Mommy issues? And for once we agree...you can not be helped...i see the long list of comments and insults on your page from how many times you have tried to play an omniscient and omnipotent being on the mighty world of youtube, and realize its not worth my time
@SquirrelyLilBugger and as simple as i can explain to you...you didnt understand their inclusion within the video...i clarified why the use of rayguns were there....that is all.....and yes.....google laser technologies and military proto-types for x-ray/ ray gun technologies....there are proto types for them...aka not completely functional and mainstream...but ideals as weapons...but obviously lasers are real...and if you can't learn to read a full statement there is no point arguing with you
@Vampkiki I already know why they're fucking there, but when someone said that these rayguns were a step back in technology, I told them they were wrong. They were in fact better than our current similar technologies. You cleary had no bloody idea what you were even replying to. We're not arguing in the slightest. I was speaking to someone else and you butted in and started talking irrelevent gibberish.
@kortanaelite history repeats itself...especially when dealing with fashion...if you don't look at history...you can not keep yourself from repeating its mistakes
steampunk is an individual envisionment of an alterd future according to the perspective of a patron of the victorian era (or that was the definition when the cocept of the genre was originally created by authors of the victorian era)
but of course given the fact that to most people the genre is kind of vage and that it is 2010 the line between past and future is often not very fine but the original definition of the genre remains unchanged (future to a victorian, but unknown to a modern)
@sapiensgirl dont worry no one would be able to afford it lol. Normal goggles not cost 100$ to by from real airship captains, and your talking about a company that justmultiplys the cost of what they buy by 10 and call it good. besides can you imagine to scandel of several "steampunks" showing up somewhere with the same gear? theys be keel halled lol. besides they like easy to mass produce stuff, steam punk is anything but easy to make.
great ideas ! but the freakin' 'buffering and loading' was driving me over the edge....and commercials in the middle? Maybe I'm not doing something right....
@AltairBaker try buying patterns....everything from historical patterns off of ebay to costume recreations in walmart....though i found most of the ones on ebay are a fraction of what a store would have sold them for....for easier items...make a paper pattern with the general idea of what you need and save a few bucks....i.e. made patterns for my vest and bloomers and capes that way....few sheets of paper and some tape....then pin to and cut out your fabric like normal
@yourfairygothmother in the very bottom right corner, there's a button with an upside down triangle in a rectangle box. Scroll over it, and 2 more rectangles should show up. Click on the top (first) rectangle that looks like a turning page that says "Turn Off Annotations". and btw I COMPLETELY AGREE

Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki Yeah. Next thing we know, the death star is really being built?
Technology that efficient does not exist nowadays. Just because it was dreamt up in the past, does not mean the idea is a step back in technology. Cavemen probably dreamt of flying before pirates did. I guess you think cavemen being able to fly would be inferior to pirate technology, despite pirates being unable to fly.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger lazers being used to pinpoint cancers and yes you can literally cook a human brain after ten minutes of x-ray exposure;leading to the military to want to use both items as weapons.doesn't mean every person has one in their house;but just because not everyone even has a phone or 9 mm gun in their house doesn't mean they don't believe that such items exist. The raygun being included in the costumes is because it was in the books. Real to you or not..it was based on the books.
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki No matter how many times I clarify the point I'm arguing, you don't seem to understand me, so I'll keep it as simple as humanly possible.
My issue with the original comment was that they implied that any idea thought up in the past, is inferior technology to whatever is in the present. You should understand that this is complete bullshit. Steampunk Rayguns do not exist in the present. Similar technology sure, but not anything that functions the same way. IE: weaponised laser device.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@Vampkiki "Real to you or not..it was based on the books."
Also, these books are fiction, so you clarified that it isn't real. It exists only in theory.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger no i clarified the basic idea of steampunk theory...i never said i thought or agreed with an idea that modern technology was in any way inferior to past technologies....
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki Then why the actual fuck did you reply to me in the first place?
I wasn't talking about theory at all, I was pointing out a flaw in someone's logic. Then you fly in and define Steampunk to me, for some pointless reason. Despite the fact I already know what Steampunk is and where it originates.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger this is why SquirrelyLilBugger
1 week ago" How are raygun designs going back exactly? I don't get it."
explaining the entire theory of steampunk based on books that use rayguns is how it is going back exactly...just to point out the flaw in your logic. and there is no need for foul language
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki And did you read what I replied to? Or did you just guess? These particular raygun designs are far superior to our current ones. Logically, that means they were going forward with their designs, not back.
Also; fucking fuck dick shits.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger and no there was no link to what you replied to ..but it doesn't matter
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki They deleted it because I WAS RIGHT! Their theorising that the rayguns in these videos are a step back from our current prototypes was sheer nonsense.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger so how am i supposed to read a comment that was deleted exactly?
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki The real question is, what made you think it was a good idea to assume you knew what question I was answering?
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger you were clearly asking a question not answering one- " How are raygun designs going back exactly? I don't get it." see the question mark ....that means question....not answer.
and these comment boxes are for anyone to comment or answer...otherwise if your so touchy...use and instant message to the specfic intended receiver.
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki Hahah, anyone who knew the context of the question would realise; there is no answer to it. This makes it: A rhetorical question. One in which the answer is implied. And that answer is 'no'. The fact that the original comment got removed only inspired confused people like yourself to try and help, where help was not needed.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger as opposed to people like you who are so confused that they intentionally ask an answerable question only to instagate others in an open forum so that you can try to impose a dominance issue on strangers? Mommy issues? And for once we agree...you can not be helped...i see the long list of comments and insults on your page from how many times you have tried to play an omniscient and omnipotent being on the mighty world of youtube, and realize its not worth my time
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki Hahahah, cry more.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger and as simple as i can explain to you...you didnt understand their inclusion within the video...i clarified why the use of rayguns were there....that is all.....and yes.....google laser technologies and military proto-types for x-ray/ ray gun technologies....there are proto types for them...aka not completely functional and mainstream...but ideals as weapons...but obviously lasers are real...and if you can't learn to read a full statement there is no point arguing with you
Vampkiki 1 year ago
@Vampkiki I already know why they're fucking there, but when someone said that these rayguns were a step back in technology, I told them they were wrong. They were in fact better than our current similar technologies. You cleary had no bloody idea what you were even replying to. We're not arguing in the slightest. I was speaking to someone else and you butted in and started talking irrelevent gibberish.
SquirrelyLilBugger 1 year ago
@SquirrelyLilBugger and it is an open forum...therefore anyone is able to comment...don't like others comments...don't post them in an open forum

steampunk is an individual envisionment of an alterd future according to the perspective of a patron of the victorian era (or that was the definition when the cocept of the genre was originally created by authors of the victorian era)
but of course given the fact that to most people the genre is kind of vage and that it is 2010 the line between past and future is often not very fine but the original definition of the genre remains unchanged (future to a victorian, but unknown to a modern)

If hot topic starts selling steampunk stuff, I'm going genocidal on those execs.
The last thing we need is a bunch of tacky 13 year old scene girls trying to interpret steampunk couture.
sapiensgirl 1 year ago
@sapiensgirl dont worry no one would be able to afford it lol. Normal goggles not cost 100$ to by from real airship captains, and your talking about a company that justmultiplys the cost of what they buy by 10 and call it good. besides can you imagine to scandel of several "steampunks" showing up somewhere with the same gear? theys be keel halled lol. besides they like easy to mass produce stuff, steam punk is anything but easy to make.

@sapiensgirl just fyi they already have been selling it for a few years now

I LOVE YOU!!! I've been looking for a way to make my own Victorian outfits for ages, since buying them it's both very expensive and a real quest!
AltairBaker 1 year ago
@AltairBaker try buying patterns....everything from historical patterns off of ebay to costume recreations in walmart....though i found most of the ones on ebay are a fraction of what a store would have sold them for....for easier items...make a paper pattern with the general idea of what you need and save a few bucks....i.e. made patterns for my vest and bloomers and capes that way....few sheets of paper and some tape....then pin to and cut out your fabric like normal

Please move that huge ass annotation, why post pictures if we can't even see them? Seriously.
yourfairygothmother 1 year ago 6
@yourfairygothmother in the very bottom right corner, there's a button with an upside down triangle in a rectangle box. Scroll over it, and 2 more rectangles should show up. Click on the top (first) rectangle that looks like a turning page that says "Turn Off Annotations". and btw I COMPLETELY AGREE
