strange i remember marc living in leeds in bedsit land in the early 80,s i used to see him he acted just like a normal bloke honest no shit . top bloke that marc almond.. respect....
Came out when i first became aware of 12" records. None have surpassed it since. A true gem. Most 12" records were just an extended version of the song, but this was like hearing the full song and to buy it on 7" would be jipping yourself. Like i said, hasn't been surpassed (except maybe for rappers delight, but why nit pick).
That superb 12'' climax, when joy and pain and loneliness melt together in giant electro chords with Almons voice shouting "i don't care", oh my God, brings tears to my eyes again and again. There is a deep melancholia hidden in this song.
@XbowMax This 12'' version is 12 times better than the original. When you hear this extended remix you can really get into this song; it has more lyrics and everything can easily get into your brain; the ending of this song makes me shiver; It is a heartrending chant to routine, boredom, loneliness, indifference and alienation when you are alone in your room. It is clear that Marc Almond is a poet of this era... This song was made 25 years ago but It can be so easily reproduced nowadays

Dave Ball - the other guy who did the synths and drum machine was/is hugely underrated. The music is fantastic. No one sounded like them.

Unfortunately for me, I was born in the early 90s.
I love Soft Cell, and all of the videos that were produced by Marc and Dave.
80s are where I live. I cannot stand 21st century music.
YouTube has become my home for keeping the 80s alive. :)

Great song, haven't heard this 12" version for a long time. Marc Almond is a massively talented dude, was way ahead of his time!
