pookakapoo: That is a blanket statement and is in fact not true. Though some states have differing laws concerning video/audio recording, it is generally NOT illegal to make recordings of people in public places as a certain amount of privacy is considered to be given-up when in these places.

This is particularly true of law enforcement. Citizens have the right to observe and record them and no consent is necessary, though some states do require you to tell them they are being recorded.
