Why is everyone making such a big deal about him saying its "3 times" ...?! I thought this was a comedy sketch....AND ITS FUNNY! Who cares! Laugh! Stop being so literal and serious.
From the comments it's pretty obvious that people from all around Asia and Eastern Europe have this. I guess in the West anglosaxon culture and American ultra extremist consumerism erased old habits like this.
@pmakfpt I lived in Iran till 6 months ago and I have never seen anybody being careful to make a "tarof" a specific number of times!! I mean it would be quite awkward and stupid if there was a specific number(like 3) to it!!(indeed that's the way Omid shows it here:) but bikhial dude, it's comedy, he might be doing this on pupose:))
we don't have a specific either. I have no idea why he says "three times." I think he just wants to make it more weird for the foreign audience. We do take it overboard though so it's not surprising to see people offering and getting turned down more than 3-4 times even.
@yashil17 Well have you ever thought that the Arabs took alot of influences from the Persian Empire lol Persians were way long before arabs and arabs had a role as slaves ;)
u have no idea how far it extends with Persians. its not just "3 tmes". 1 single time of refusal takes like 5 minutes. u can spend like 15-45 minutes with families arguing over paying a bill, eating dinner, or accepting gifts.
@jsbeard18 its more than just a kind of refusal. it also has to do with if you compliment an item in a hosts house, they will insist you take it, even if they dont really mean it, and they expect you to refuse. this is also tarof.
We do this in the West Indies as well.
