"The Battle of New Orleans" is the title of a song written by Jimmy Driftwood. The song describes the 1815 Battle of New Orleans from the perspective of an American soldier; the lyrics are evidently intended to be comical. It has been recorded by many artists, but the singer most often associated with this song is Johnny Horton. His version scored number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959
This is Jimmy Driftwood ! Happen to be a cousin of mine.. He died in 1998 and did shows at the Jimmy Driftwood Barn in Mountain View Arkansas up till the last part of his life. Great Guy and wonderful storyteller with his music.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the guns fell silent. Today we remember. Solemn Greetings on this Remembrance Veterans Poppy Armistice Day to all nations.
And for the for Americans/Canadians Please accept my salute on the anniversary of the Battle of Crysler's Farm Nov 11 1813.
yeah this is most certainly Jimmy Driftwood - original writer/singer. he helped Johnny get his start. you should put his name in the tags so people can find this. last time i'd heard this was 13 years ago on the radio.
@proverbs2221 Actually, the tune Eighth of January was used FOR this song. It's the same tune, different song. Like the Abc's and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
Jimmy Driftwood was a history teacher in Arkansas and wrote this song to try and get the kids to learn history. He later became an entertainer in the music business.
as to who is singing this song, no clue. Might be Boxcar but without his famous train whistle I can's say.
Last, greatest, and most dominating battle on this country's soil in all of our history, and kick started our manifest destiny to the west. Ole Hickory took some 3000 regulars, volunteers, Louisianians, Indians, Texans, Pirates, and anybody else he could muster and defeated an army of over 30,000 well armed and well trained British Regulars. I don't think people really appreciate just how big this battle was in the history of this country.
we need more people to be aware of this traitor government trying to erode our rights so we can be mearged into a global government so the rich can stay rich and the middle class and the poor well... stay poor and cant even speak. we need 2nd american revolution and impeach all that are in power seamlessly. dont be fooled by saying it aint so bad now think of the frog in the pot of water ex. we are on the verge of turning into a europeian state ask the middle class their if they like it?
our country is in a tough spot right now. it has been for 10-15 years. all it needs right now is its citizens being unfaithful. the eurupeans are loyal to their country. uf fukin american cant stand 2 weeks without luxuries, and now we havnt for 2 years, we the people want to kill the government millions of people died to protect. you disgust me.
2 weeks? try my whole life. I make 28k ayear being a carpenter and I cant seam to find a 2nd job in the news paper wonder why? I am awake to the fact that some one behind the curtain is throwing levers behind the seen. To set up a control grid to enslave the last of free humanity. ask your self why havet we caught binladen? probibly hanging out with the white house. last place the army would look. seriously. how could north com run a training ex. to catch hijacked planes the same day as 9/11
deathmarch. i didnt mean hard working americans like you. who i meant was the middle clas (me) and the upper class who cant stand this kind of stuff. im sorry if i offended you, i was just in rage.
dam europeans. the people that have to have their luxuries are the friggin liberal "equal rights" bastards that you see on TV. what you dont see are the average americans that work for a living. by the way, the only people that r in a slump are the rich people (oil companies), and the poor people in New Orleans (ironic huh?) ....... and i dont kno why we keep saving fricken new orleans. i mean they have it coming. there below sea level for gods sake. stop complaining until you know your facts.
Yes Johnny Horton is famous for singing this song but he didn't write it and its not him singing. Jimmy Driftwood originally wrote it. But this can't be him singing it either. Driftwood lived in Arkansas and at the end of the song you can hear "ayeee". That sound is distinctly cajun and comes from Louisiana's bayous. Every child in south Louisiana learns this song at a very early age so my guess is this is a teacher and his kids singing it here.
Just a week after hurricane Katrina in San Francisco we were all outside of our coffeeshop sitting around smoking when the new guy from New Orleans Started playing this song on his guitar. People started singing along and before you knew it there were about 30 folks/passersby that stopped what they were doing to sing along.
One of those great moments when a song can rally such brotherhood among strangers.
Several people have mentioned the Cajun Fiddle. This of course appropriate as the US side was made up of Mostly Cajun and Acadian forces. The British really under estimated them and paid a dear price for it.
actually Johny Horton didn't make the song, it was made some guy nobodys ever heard of and then johny H made it so populare that it is credited to him
I'm actually related to him. As far as everyone in my family knows he wrote it. I won't argue the matter, because I obviously never met him. That's just what I know.
well in the end its not that big of a deal about who wrote it because in my mind its a good song that is still around for enjoying, cause when you realy think about it whoever did write is without a doubt Dead.
cool beat to this song and the guy singing it does an excellent job too....idk who this issinging ti but Johnny Horton released the song, i don't think it's him, though
