  • "The Battle of New Orleans" is the title of a song written by Jimmy Driftwood. The song describes the 1815 Battle of New Orleans from the perspective of an American soldier; the lyrics are evidently intended to be comical. It has been recorded by many artists, but the singer most often associated with this song is Johnny Horton. His version scored number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959

  • This is Jimmy Driftwood ! Happen to be a cousin of mine.. He died in 1998 and did shows at the Jimmy Driftwood Barn in Mountain View Arkansas up till the last part of his life. Great Guy and wonderful storyteller with his music.

  • Pretty sure that is Doc. Watson. At lest it sounds like him. He is the bland blue grass guitar player/singer.

    I might be wrong.

  • @lightningattack1 Pour Quot/ Doc Watson- echo chambe?

  • yeah this is most certainly Jimmy Driftwood - original writer/singer. he helped Johnny get his start. you should put his name in the tags so people can find this. last time i'd heard this was 13 years ago on the radio.

  • I believe it Jimmy C Newman...Louisiana

  • Sounds like Jimmy C Newman to me, for Louisiana...I bet thats who it is.. .

  • The song is actually called "Eighth of January"--and it's really fun to play on Guitar! :)

  • @proverbs2221 Actually, the tune Eighth of January was used FOR this song. It's the same tune, different song. Like the Abc's and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

  • @sirlaps No way Jose!

  • Jimmy Driftwood was a history teacher in Arkansas and wrote this song to try and get the kids to learn history. He later became an entertainer in the music business.

as to who is singing this song, no clue. Might be Boxcar but without his famous train whistle I can's say.

  • I was raised on this song, by Johnny Hortan.

  • Last, greatest, and most dominating battle on this country's soil in all of our history, and kick started our manifest destiny to the west. Ole Hickory took some 3000 regulars, volunteers, Louisianians, Indians, Texans, Pirates, and anybody else he could muster and defeated an army of over 30,000 well armed and well trained British Regulars. I don't think people really appreciate just how big this battle was in the history of this country.

  • we need more people to be aware of this traitor government trying to erode our rights so we can be mearged into a global government so the rich can stay rich and the middle class and the poor well... stay poor and cant even speak. we need 2nd american revolution and impeach all that are in power seamlessly. dont be fooled by saying it aint so bad now think of the frog in the pot of water ex. we are on the verge of turning into a europeian state ask the middle class their if they like it?

  • our country is in a tough spot right now. it has been for 10-15 years. all it needs right now is its citizens being unfaithful. the eurupeans are loyal to their country. uf fukin american cant stand 2 weeks without luxuries, and now we havnt for 2 years, we the people want to kill the government millions of people died to protect. you disgust me.

  • 2 weeks? try my whole life. I make 28k ayear being a carpenter and I cant seam to find a 2nd job in the news paper wonder why? I am awake to the fact that some one behind the curtain is throwing levers behind the seen. To set up a control grid to enslave the last of free humanity. ask your self why havet we caught binladen? probibly hanging out with the white house. last place the army would look. seriously. how could north com run a training ex. to catch hijacked planes the same day as 9/11

  • deathmarch. i didnt mean hard working americans like you. who i meant was the middle clas (me) and the upper class who cant stand this kind of stuff. im sorry if i offended you, i was just in rage.

  • dam europeans. the people that have to have their luxuries are the friggin liberal "equal rights" bastards that you see on TV. what you dont see are the average americans that work for a living. by the way, the only people that r in a slump are the rich people (oil companies), and the poor people in New Orleans (ironic huh?) ....... and i dont kno why we keep saving fricken new orleans. i mean they have it coming. there below sea level for gods sake. stop complaining until you know your facts.

  • This song is awesome when I saw it in Social Studies.

  • chalmette

  • Its a damn good song. Mom made me listen to it all the time.

  • it's johnny horton but the original is from lonnie donegan

  • Yes Johnny Horton is famous for singing this song but he didn't write it and its not him singing. Jimmy Driftwood originally wrote it. But this can't be him singing it either. Driftwood lived in Arkansas and at the end of the song you can hear "ayeee". That sound is distinctly cajun and comes from Louisiana's bayous. Every child in south Louisiana learns this song at a very early age so my guess is this is a teacher and his kids singing it here.

  • johny horton

  • this isn't Johnny Horton singing.

  • @Geetargirl90 yes it is omgggggg

  • @thehalo3godz no it's not. if you listen to Johnny Horton's you'll know, this isn't him.

  • my teacher played this song and everyone did not sing this song and the teachers did

  • bahahaha!

    love this song!

its by johnny horton, & the music videois AWESOME!! :D

lol, we've been singing this in my Am. studies class <3

  • This is a good song, yeah I wish Johnny Horton sang this right now, on this song, here

  • written and sung by johnny horton. his is the best version. this is not him singing here.

  • yes! now i can memorize it!

  • don't u dare start singing this around me, cuz you'll probably get it stuck in my head.

  • (to jgaby)

  • OMG THIS is catchy. mr fernandez showedd it to us! yay him xP lol

  • Johnny Horton, yeah like the rest of those people said we've been singin this in class for about two days now it's a really good song!!!

  • my teacher played this for our class tday:D we got to sing a long

  • lol same here

  • My teacher played this song 4 us.

  • Just a week after hurricane Katrina in San Francisco we were all outside of our coffeeshop sitting around smoking when the new guy from New Orleans Started playing this song on his guitar. People started singing along and before you knew it there were about 30 folks/passersby that stopped what they were doing to sing along.

One of those great moments when a song can rally such brotherhood among strangers.

  • Several people have mentioned the Cajun Fiddle. This of course appropriate as the US side was made up of Mostly Cajun and Acadian forces. The British really under estimated them and paid a dear price for it.

  • It was written by Johnny Horton. But has been covered by lots of people.

  • actually Johny Horton didn't make the song, it was made some guy nobodys ever heard of and then johny H made it so populare that it is credited to him

  • I'm actually related to him. As far as everyone in my family knows he wrote it. I won't argue the matter, because I obviously never met him. That's just what I know.

  • well in the end its not that big of a deal about who wrote it because in my mind its a good song that is still around for enjoying, cause when you realy think about it whoever did write is without a doubt Dead.

  • i am master cheef

  • cool beat to this song and the guy singing it does an excellent job too....idk who this issinging ti but Johnny Horton released the song, i don't think it's him, though

  • this guy sucks jimmy horton is way better

  • haha our teacher from social studies played this song for us :)

  • us to

  • my teacher did 2 lol

  • He did that for us too! Were studying the War of 1812. :)

  • omg! she did that for us too. Suddenly, all of us canadian british students became pro-american...lol

  • The best version is done by The Royal Guardsmen on the album Snoopy VS. the Red Baron

  • Love this song. I like the fiddle in it too. Sounds very Cajun, which is cool.

  • check out my channel and my vid that is also named "battle of new orleans". it a good one. go to g4game channel

  • There is also a live version by Nitty Gritty Band.

  • jonny horton sings this one it's one of my favs.

  • the one i kno is by jimmy horton...but idk...lol

  • great

  • This is Jimmie Driftwood the song's author singing. This is the only Driftwood version currently on YouTube as far as I know...

  • this is a great song!

  • Awesome, i love it

  • This version could very well be Boxcar Willie. This song is his albums "Truck Drivin Man"(2004) & "Sings Spirit of America" (1994).

  • Johnny Horton was 1st. He was an incredible contribution to Country Music, and in many of his tunes was a history lesson. North to Alaska, Sink the Bismark, Johnny Reb.

  • Lonney Donnigan had a big hit with this song in the 70s in England

  • Of the different versions of this song, this is my favorite.

  • what the hell is your problem, huh?

You're a sick human being and a waste of skin!!!!

    *spitting on you!

  • What the hell are "wemon"?

  • yall r all wrong! its Jimmie Driftwood.

  • That's a good call, WhiteCheetah. I'm watching a vid of Driftwood singing this tune in the early 70's. There are some similarities, but there are some stylistic diffs, which could be due to decades apart.

  • thank you-.-

    i knew i was rite.....good clip

  • umm jimy horton did it in the late 50's...lol

  • johnny horton

  • Yes, it is Jimmy Driftwood. I've been looking forever for a version of him doing it. He originaly recorded this song, then Johnny Horton made it famous, but this is definately Jimmy Driftwood.

  • Johnny Horton

  • Peoples it is BOXCAR WILLIE

  • i'm pretty sure it's lester flatt

  • I think it might be Jimmy Martin.

  • This might be Don Nyman. There is a version of Nyman doing this song on u-tube. This current version, however, has that wonderful fiddle in it, which I think the other version doesn't have.

If you look at the Video Responses for "Battle of New Baghdad" -- a modern-day parody of "Battle of New Orleans" -- you will find several other versions.

    >

  • Yes the fiddle in this song is great. Especially considering it is played in a unique Cajun style, actually quite appropriate.

  • johnny horton had the biggest hit from this song, but i'm not sure who this is. i know i've heard him before,though......
