Cool to see him playing traditional grip. Dennis is the man. One of the alltime greats. A pocket as deep as the ocean and chops as terrifying as ... an ocean .... full of Great Whites.
rrdrums (jeffy), you are a fucking wacko, first you hate dennis for YEARS telling people he sucks, then all of a sudden you praise him everywhere for on e solo, now you hate him again, pick one moron. either way dennis chambers still far better and more successful then youll ever hope to be. this is a FACT get used to it because this is the REAL WORLD not FANTASY LAND.
Being one of the most inspirational drummers of the modern era, I'm sure he's awesome on so many levels. Sometimes, you wonder how much concentration and effort they put in to make a song like this such a masterpiece. Its technical yet soothing. The most important thing is, both the laymen and the music professors can appreciate this. Dennis, you're amazing.
@Easleytee Haaaaaaaaaaaaa lololol funny...yet so many drummers even from the Swing,Big Band and Bop scene is influenced by Dennis for his professionalism and feel.
LOLOL "Leave it to the pros" If he wasn't a pro he wouldn't be on the tribute wouldn't he? The man can swing he's just not seen doing it much because he's known for other things.
Dennis is one of my drumming heros for sure but I have to agree with some of the others here. Of all the styles he can smoke, I've never really seen nail down the swing like Weckl, Vinnie, or Erskine. Still a master of the drum kit though.
dennis chambers plays jazz funk beebop latin rock hiphop blues and samba the god of drumming if u ask me look at his range thers other great drummers that mastered a style or 2 but not 8 styles
@reggaecracker The problem is his 'feel' doesn't fit the situation, never indicated he was not a good drummer...just that his playing in this circumstance does not fit.
The people who say Dennis Chambers can't swing, or play along with the piano, or master different jazz drumming styles, should really LISTEN to the playing behind the rest of the group--not just his fills. If you did that, you would be able to see that he can play just as tastefully as any of the classic jazz drummers who were popular in the 40s and 50s--Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Philly Jo Jones, and many others.
The people who say Dennis Chambers can't swing, or play with the piano, or master jazz drumming styles, should really LISTEN to the playing behind the rest of the group--not just his fills.
well, if Dennis Chambers can´t swing maybe you jazz masters should give him a call and " teach" him all your masterful swing moves... i just can´t help but wonder why the hell did they call him instead of YOU!!!!
His fills aren't tastefull and they don't fit in or compliment anything the pianist is playing. If he's the best than he should learn how to swing rather than blow chunks all over the buddy rich big band.
Buddy was always pushing his band while Dennis plays a lot more laid back. I think Tommy Igoe did a better tribute for Buddy in a representation of his style
Amazing player, but the only gripe I have is that he doesn't have much subtlety in his playing. And I don't think his drums sound earthy enough for this kind of music. But its just an opinion.
...playing a Miles Davis song recorded with Jimmy Cobb as a salute to Buddy Rich... interesting approach to say the least. That aside, his ride cymbal sounds awesome. Any idea what it is?
Is this a tribute to the millions of illegal aliens that are pouring into America and getting free dental, medical, housing, urban development, school meals, education and a joyful life of ease and style?

Is this a tribute to the Old Tyme fiddle players of Texarkana, Texas?
What sayeth these here drums? What banging away and noise and clatter of sounds and gongs and splashes and clicks.
Ok fellow drummers hold ears I'm about to blaspheme, I'm a Soul/ Funk drummer and I hate Jazz, I know many of todays drum fills & licks come from Jazz drumming but I just can't get into it, I've played Jazz many times but it does nothing for me, I,m a big fan of Chambers & Collins drumming but give there Funk stuff any day.
@UntitledHead Have some patience. If you were to actually listen to the music and the technical phrasing of the question and answer solo, it would not be so boring.
I worked this event and helped set the drums for these drum kings, all the players were cool, this was in 97'. Thanks for posting!

Dennis is far from a pure Jazz player. He is first and foremost a powerful and incomparable Fusion/Funk player.
Leave the Swing, Big Band and Bop to the professionals.
