@Themanwhocameback2 Like you, I thought the "hoaxer" in the lyrics was John Lennon. But he mentions religion, which Lennon didn't preach. I'm thinking now he was referring to Meher Baba. Carly Simon's song "Haven't Got Time For The Pain" was about Meher Baba. Her song "Anticipation" was about anticipating a date with Cat Stevens. ...So...is "The Hurt" about Carly Simon? She also wrote a song titled "Hurt". Is that her reply song? ...Interesting.
Look at the passion, look at his body language , he is sharing deep truth as he sees it, this is art , this story telling this is epic humanity being proffered to us. Will we listen, will we learn ..up to you . But I now know wha he means - after so many years his journey has made sense to me , through true growth. hE IS STILL GROWING OF COURSE AND HIS LATEST MUSIC CONTINUES THE NARRATIVE THAT IS ONE OF THE MOST HONEST ,LOVING AND GENUINE GUYS IN THE BUSINESS.
This was a really brave departure from the acceptable formats that dominated at the time, he pushed the style and the depth of lyrics, he was mildly controversial and confrontational when everyone was being all Rajneeshi and orange, he totally turned on a sixpence after Tea for and the Teaser , surprised his audience and his record label and went on to make what for me is definitely a fantastic album.
These Lyrics Are True, They Relate To Me Alot The First Line , About How Your Friends Don't Wanna Listen To Yer Problems And Don't Have The Time, I Love This Man, He's Made Some Of The Most Beautiful Songs In Music, I've Cried To His Songs So Much... I Just Wish He Didn't Start Making Records Again These

Forget It Now I Won't Call Cat Stevens ......."Yusuf Islam"
id have to say this is one of my favorite albums. this is when he changed his band isnt it? yeah the four peice was great too. but i like every song on Foreigner all his records were good though wernt they
@leit420 There is something about Cat Stevens, his means of delivering a story, a song, an emotion...This is my favorite track of his. I don`t know what happened after this album but his subject matter started to get really abstract and then silly and then he turned to Islam. I`m glad he`s back, even though a shadow of his once powerful, creative self.
I love this song, one of my favorites of his and definitely an under appreciated hit. This album (Foreigner) and Catch Bull at Four were classic, liked them better than the more celebrated and popular first three. So glad Yusef is back into pop music.
In grew up with this genius! It helps my heart to listen to him! He is very spiritual in every sense---It is amazing how he was always searching for his truth and he found it--and it looks to me like he still searches for that Heaven---it's in him, like it is in each and everyone of us---we were made that way....Don't forget we are more spirits than human!!!! God bless him and his family!!!!
This is one of five of Cat's most memorable songs, in my opinion, even though you don't hear much of the other 4 songs on, "Foreigner," the1973 released album.
Perhaps the length of a few songs, especially, "Foreigner Suite," a "moving," song of loss and the resulting pain.
but the other 4 songs:"The Hurt," such a great rendition here, as well as, "How Many Times," "Later," and finally, "100 I Dream," all are a very beautiful and timeless collections of songs.
There's a magical energy about Cat Stevens in these performances. I'm hopeful there are, and will yet be, artists out there that can capture the same essence music like this carries with it.
i wonder...was this the only time bernard purdie played live with cat? what a drummer! and you gotta love jean roussel's afro! great performance of a great, great song.
Thanks, great to see this again after all these years. Saw original airing back and 73. It is from "In Concert" on ABC. It was filmed at the Aquarius Theater in Hollywood near Sunset and Vine Street. Every time I pass this theater I think of this concert. Cat was GREAT that night. I hope ABC will on day release this concert on DVD. Remastered with 5.1 sound would be a dream.
I was a HUGE "Cat" fan so of course I purchased the LP when it first came out, learned every lyric and played it until the grooves were almost gone. Purchased a few for friends as well. Absolutely AWESOME. Saw him twice in very early 70s, GOT THE PICS, lol!
I wonder with te lyrics if Cat is speaking about himself (souds that way, looking back) or about someone else? This song, too, is an acquired taste, yet compelling- what an excellent artist!
Truth is so hard to find

Love this song.
I've never heard anyone comment on Cat's devastating criticism of his contemporary John Lennon in this song:
"He's just a hoaxer, don't you know, selling peace and religion between his jokes and his karma chewing gum."
Lennon was a bit of a self absorbed bloviator at the time.
