  • i ve got 27 version of mozart ,queen of the night but my favorite one is the one she sing with the berlin philarmonic orchestra .....what a voice

  • Amazing! Wow ....... such technique, such high notes .... a virtuosic display of coloratrura at its most breathy-taking!

  • She is g and never heard of her until here...

  • Un air à "cocottes" assumé comme tel; et avec quel brio! ((les piqués sont bluffant de précision et de célérité!)

  • at times she looks like Bartoli

  • this is a gem, oh my FUCKING gosh!!!

pardon my French / pardonez mon anglais (in order to do the French justice...)

  • Beverly Hoch was the very first Classical Music Singer I bought on my own. I was always exposed to Opera and Art song from a very young age because my Mother was a Singer of Classical Music who also owned a great record collection, but I discovered Beverly on my own. I see people here lamenting about why she is not famous. My guess is that she is probably a very sweet and gentle person in a world where your audience is as cut throat as your peers. So glad I am able to enjoy her here on youtube.

  • amazing! how is she not more famous?

  • I don't think I have ever heard such high notes executed so effortlessly or so delightfully playful!!!! Perfection!!!

  • This is wonderful... just delicious joy in the art of singing - others ask why Ms Hoch is not more famous and I suspect the answer is a sad one. Too many modern opera pundits dismiss this ravishing charming signing as "canary or bird like " and favour singers who grimace choke and "Act" their way through music. I am all for a bit of acting but it is so very refreshing to find a voice and artist who is happy to take us back to the world of Galli Curci and Tetrazinni - thank you for sharing this

  • hey can we have it again without the applause cut short! i could applaud the wonderful Ms Hoch forever.

  • Finally! I found my colaratura heroine! I used to have a recording of her which got lost and I pined for it, but thanks to Youtube I can hear her again, she is phenomenal.

  • she is even better tuned than the flute... LOL!

  • Madam Hoch is one of the greatest singers EVER. Even at Galli-Curci's-Melba's-Tetrazzini's time she would reign as their equal.

Thanks for sharing, and thank you Madam for the inspiration.

  • When she hit that A-flat above high C, I just TEARED! Who is this woman and why is she not much better known!

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!

I've never heard coloratura like this!

  • There is an album called The Art of the Coloratura with the Hong Kong Symphony

    and Beverly. It's stunning

  • Génial ! Elle s'amuse, nous amuse, et arrive même à rendre cet air expressif.

  • WTF!?!!HIGH G#?!?!

  • Pity her very bad Italian diction, but....who cares, she is very good!

  • incredible singing..I just love her!!!

  • Ke mostro di bravura!!!! Non conoscevo quest'aria... che cos'è???

  • Mi ricorda Galvany, la sua coloratura non è aspirato.

  • Wow!!!!!!!! Coloratura!!!

    I Like soooooo much!

His voice is like Roberta Peters, but is soo mature. Where is she nowdays?

uuuuuuuu i listen and cannont stop relisten, rsrs

  • @yurib Hoch's production was superior.

  • Brava! Bravissima!

    What time is this record?

Remember me Galli Cursi! But his voice is more dark.

  • her voice is like a instrument

  • I am stupified!! WHAT a STUNNING performance THAT was!!!!!! Brava , Brava Brava and Brava again!!!!!!!!

  • this is un_____believable...I'm dumbfounded

  • holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • BRAVA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I love it!!! Much better than Gruberova or Sutherland. Now I will listen to Galvany and Tetrazzini.

  • You must remember that this is a fundamentally different voice than both Gruberova's and Sutherland's. Also, Sutherland never sang this aria, so a comparison can't really be made.

  • your comments are so boring, so unimaginative.

  • And also very accurate and to the point. And, they have content. Why do I have to be imaginative to say what I just said in that comment?

  • She does difficult things so easily!

  • GREAT! What an agility!

  • MERVEILLEUSE

  • Very good, but in some part a bit too metalic for my taste. Try Dessay and Gruberova.

  • WOW!!! Bravissimo !!!

  • This actually leaves you speechless - that coloratura, those trills!!!!!!! Brava!!!!!!

  • Golly, what a marvelous voice and technique. I've forgotten all about her, Thank you!

  • Love it, if people perform what they really master, so agil and alive. To me it sounds in best Lily Pons style, so of course it stands for itself.

  • veramente notevole... un perfetto controllo vocale, ottima tecnica e musicalità! davvero stupefacente!!!

  • I´m IMPRESSED

  • SUBLIME!

  • She' s perfectt!!! it's a pitty that she doesn't record more CDs! When I listen her i remember the old great coloraturas, like Mady Mesplé and Rita Streich

  • Thak you so much for posting this. I haven't heard this for years, since someone stole my beloved Hoch cassette. Her voice is a marvel, a triumph of technique and beautiful natural tone.

  • She once did a concert in Holland for television singing scarlatti and handel, must have been in the early to mid 80ties. a programme called "young people of the concert platform". She was really outstanding, strange she did not become a bigger star.

  • I'm dead. I'M DEAD! Listen to that staccato technique! Her speed is jaw-dropping, and the SOL-SHARP IN ALT!!!! SUSTAINED!

  • I was fortunate to find a copy of the CD after having bought the LP in London when I was on tour in '87!

She is a GODDESS - I ADORE HER!

Her precision and placement blow me away!

Continued good health & prayers for you Ms. Hoch - a cancer survivor like my mother.

  • Could not agree more. Its so crisp and exact.. she sounds like a flute.. superb

  • I have her as the Queen and she is spectacular. It's a perfectly produced voice, no labor, no bad habits. She's a wonderful singer, and all LCs should watch and listen to her.

  • The best tribute I can make to the glorious Art of Madam Hoch is to compare her with Maria Barrientos.

I spoke today with a colleague of hers, and she happens to be a very kind, charming and elegant person too. The issue is that today, the taste of the public is in decay. They want to hear strain and effort in a voice, with neurotic, hysteric interpretations. They don't respect true Maestria which has to do with balance and craftmanship. And not with screaming ones guts out. Anyways, BIG BRAVA!!!

  • OMG, finally a voice of reason!

  • Thank you. And many youngsters like me tend to get fed up with new Dessay-like "pompierisme".

  • maria barrientos ??

  • How very true, senaforever! I keep repeating the same thing, but I blame recording companies a lot. Money money money! Quick quick quick! I am always pleased to know there are people that value true artists, and not just pretty faces on CD sleeves.

  • ;-)

  • @sevoflurane but beverly hoch is also beautiful on this video!

  • AMAZING!! Perfect soubrette.

  • shes not a soubrette

  • She cant be a soubrette. Since she has an extension to coloratura

  • Now THAT was just nothing short of mind blowing!!!I am willing to bet that Proch was on his knees and the audience ,on its feet! Brava Beverly Hoch, I salute you!

  • She is simply amazing....:D I also love her interpretation of Alabiev's "Russian Nightingale "

  • Amazing, and so easy, is she actually doing any work to get the notes and sounds?

  • yes, amazing

  • Holy mother of God!!!

This woman is a FREAK OF NATURE?!?!?

Why in the HELL did I not know about her before?!?!

  • She's the soprano on what I think is the best Carmina Burana recording: Charles Dutoit and the Montreal Symphony with Hoch, Mark Oswald and..... (I forget the tenor).

  • This is amazing!

Like it more then Dessays version.

    Wonderfull, and clear.

Pitty La Stupenda never sang it...:(

  • This is very close to vocal perfection applying to a ... certain kind of music !...

But what is most amazing (to me) is that this... certain kind of music still continues being TRUE BEAUTIFUL MUSIC, with interpreters reaching this wonderful level of quality...

Incidentally, a charming lovely Lady, too, isn't she ?

Apart from HEMPEL or TETRAZZINI, or Lily PONS, does anybody remember Miliza KORJUS too ? (musically speaking rather far behind Beverly KOCH as far as I can judge)

  • There are moments in this recording which bring to mind the marvelous recordings of this piece made by Frieda Hempel, in particular the attention given to lovely, caressing vowel sounds and the seemingly effortless, exhilarating top. More please!

  • A wonderful post ... thanks

  • Amazing, I can't find any other words at the moment.

  • ...Holy crap...(in the goodway)...All I gotta say!...hahahaha. I wanna hear it again...

  • This performance will not replace the brilliant recordings of the song by Galli-Curci and Tetrazzini, but it reveals a pleasing tone and great technique. Pons also made a fine recording of the piece.

  • I have her cd with this song on it, but it's even more incredible SEEING it!!!

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!I never heard of her before - she is a total WOW. Such clarity in her runs and beautiful bell like tones - a total delight. Thank you, coloraturafan for introducing so many of us to another hidden star.

  • Great! Nice to see a pure coloratura voice properly used, and not abused. Loved having the flutist up there with her....I've always wanted to do that!

  • 10 e lode!!!

  • This is pretty much some of the most AMAZING singing I've ever heard...by ANYONE. Even if she had omitted the high A-flat. Her trills and runs are out of this world and her tone is sweet as honey. Absolutely WONDERFUL! Why she wasn't more famous is honestly beyond me. Her Nightingale is wonderful as well.

  • @Iareto high A-flat???

  • I have the CD she made years ago with the Hong Kong orchestra. It's full of great singing.

    What ever happened to her?

  • This is almost pure coloratura singing.

    Brava Mrs Hoch!

  • Kudos to you coloraturafan for great finds like this! More power!

  • OMG! I have her cd and I can't believe the range, precision and agility of her voice. I almost thought she doesn't exist! Seeing her sing live amazes me even more! Bravo!!!

  • What a lovely voice. There's something joyfull and effortless in her singing. It's been a while since a singer surprised me so much.

  • Conclusion: She is not human!

  • She's such fun! I've got her CD with the Hong Kong orchestra, but she only sings two of the variations there. I'm so happy to see all three of them here. Thank you ever so much!

  • A lovely voice, impeccable technique, and a great trill. She came along when her type of voice and limited repertoire were not much in demand; she also had to compete with better known and more established coloraturas. There's much more to enjoy than the A flat above high C. Unlike the Callas recording (astonishing as it is), Hoch sings with great clarity and joy. I believe she's teaching in Texas. A great, but ignored artist.

  • Hell yeah! Lol, I think that's my automatic reaction when viewing this video, she really was an amazing singer - more Hoch please!!!

  • do you have more of Ms Hoch's video? A wonderful but ignored artist.
