beuatiful town visited here on my honeymoon never forget the feeling of a time gone by my wife wouldnt go into the cemetary.... saw a foot bone sticking out of one grave a very special time in my life when love was young in fact the 1938 gmc truck i saw there inspired me to find one and restore it truly a time i will never forget
Does somebody look after it all? I can't help but wonder how those things still remain there without them being stolen or trashed? I'd love to check it out, even though it's so spooky.
my great grandfather was james S. cain he was the one who owned the bank in bodie. my dad was mark cain he passed away. but he was my dads grandfather
one of the most forboding places i have ever been to! The grey and dark clouds over the desserted town is eerily reminiscent of those old western movies! I used to live in East Africa in a desert town called Magadi, Kenya. This reminds me of that!
One of the most haunting places i have ever visited.....I went with my family about 13 years ago. the day we went there were ominous black thunderclouds in the distance .......very symbolic ......earily silent and just the wind opening and closing loose doors.........wonder what it must be like at night? Coober Pedy in Australia is a modern day version of this. Its silent too when you leave the town limits!
i went there 6 years ago. you can get inide some of the buildings to a point but the areas which have items are wire fenced of. I believe that sadly some items are going missing but it is said that anyone who takes something from Bodie will have terrible bad luck.
Luba Luft, rosa may was a prostitute who sacrificed herself for bodie miners during a phenuemonia ? epidemic in the winter of 1911,1912. Because of her being a whore ,the towns women would not allow her to be buried inside the cemetery fence with the RESPECTABLE people. That is why I made her a headstone myself so her grave would not become lost again as it was at the early part of the last century.
Thanks for the wonderful well done video. I've known Bodie before it became a state park. I hunted sage hens with my dad in Bodie in the early 60's when the state hired a care taker to watch it. It has always had a haunting draw for me. It's a great place to lose yourself in. If you visit, stop by and say hi to Rosa Mae.
@LubaLuft Rosa was a prostitute who sacrificed her life to help nurse miner's during an epidemic. The women of the town decided she wasn't worthy of being buried with the DECENT folk, so she was buried outside the perimeter fence, with no marker until I made her one in 2001. She had to wait 90 years. I've heard the dead don't rest without a marker. Now she can REST IN PEACE.
@LubaLuft I just bought a book on Rosa Mae. A Soiled Dove who turned into an Angel of Mercy when she helped Bodie's miners through a great epidemic. No reward at the end when she was not allowed final resting next to her former in life patrons in the town cemetary.
@LubaLuft if not yet answered Rosa Mae was a whore in the town..But a saint to many too She helped the sick among many things.Google her name and the town she will pop up.
We went there a few times in the 1970s, it was fascinating and was also sad. I remember it so well, the hotel with the billiard table and the caskets, several small ones for children and the saloon the schoolhouse and the lesson still up on the board.
Be a real shame if Bodie is allowed to disappear. We had a few weeks driving round Western USA and only stumbled across Bodie by accident. Tioga Pass was closed and we decided to use Sonora Pass, stopped at some roadworks and a worker asked if we were going to Bodie, at this point (and coming from England!!!) I'd never heard of it. We took the short detour and it became one of the highlights of our trip, it's a fantastic place, a little eerie at times but it makes you very nostalgic.
Bodie is in danger now. The CA govt will cease funding many state parks and that signals a bad end for Bode. Lobby your congressman to save the parks of California.

it doesent realy mater the cat probly feeds its self very wellon mice and rats and things it wont be the only one there.i wonder do the park rangers live there with there familys on do they spend a few days a weak each sort of take it in turns
There is an entrance road with an attendant and a good sized parking area on the perimeter of the town.
A few of the buildings have partial openings or areas to allow you to go in and observe closer & take photos. For others, you have to sign up for a special tour to be able to go inside.
wow, and to think how elegant they dressed back then now look at us. its realy hard to belive.I would love to go back in time and visit this time perid. (excuse my spelling.) but it would be so cool. i love the video and great job on it=]
The weather in bodie is among the most harsh anywhere in North America-incredibly cold winter and blazing summers with wild storms all the time. It's a protected state park with rangers, etc and it's a pretty far drive to get to off the main road-very cool!
This is the best video I've seen on YouTube by far. This place is a photographers dream. I wish I could go there. I'd rather be there than take a vacation to the Bahamas. LOL (I've already been to the Bahamas)
i think theres a ghost town silent hill and there's a fire blazing underneath the ground which creates smoke rising from the ground 24 hrs a day 365 days a year but im not sure what state it's in. i know some people still live there though. in the documentary they referred to Silent Hill for some reason, im not sure if it's called that though. Maybe BCghostTownsDOTca can help you :)
This may be a bit cliche, but I'm surprised that no director or producer in Hollywood-Land has tried to cash in on any fortunes about western ghost towns. It may intrigue people enough to have them pay the money at the movie theater and learn about some history, for a change. I would anyways...I've already got ideas about how the movie should be, lol. Bodie, CA.
If anyone is really interested in Bodie and it's history read the books "Minning Camps Days" by Emil Billeb. This book has alot of interesting first hand accounts by a gentle man Emil Billeb who was an accountant on the Mono Lake Railway and Comercial company Railroad, also know as the Bodie Benton Railroad, Alot of Bodie Benton Locomotive photos for any railroad fan. Another Great book is "The Mines are Looking Well" this book I believe was written by Bob Bell's Son, a minner in bodie
Is all that stuff original (dishes, etc) - I have heard that alot of ghost towns YES still have dresses in the windows, if touched they a very fragile cause they been their all those years - Amazing !!
it is located at over 8000 feet elevation in the high desert, i have ridden a snowmobile past bodie...in winter they had tunnels through the snow to go from building to building...look up "good bye god, im going to bodie" the baddest hardest town that ever was
interesting video & also some very interesting items left behind. I'm amazed that much of it is still there. As another has commented, i hope people don't take souvenirs as eventualy this would spoil this(frozen in time)moment of its many curious details.
Bodie has some beautiful buildings with alot of potential to bring them back to life. Imagine 50 years from now bringing your grandchildren to such an incredible piece of history. The best way to start is with a friends society to help with funding. With enough people the excitement builds and before you know, younger generations are learning about the past.
I worked security at an outdoor air museum that was filled with old buildings and each one had it's history recorded. People from all over the world visit just to see what life was like for early settlers. Plus there are people who play the roles of the people who used to live in the buildings. Perhaps you might want to think about restoration and preserve your part of history there.
I went there 2 years ago, and I was amazed at what I saw. I plan on working there, it's a bitchen looking place to live, or at least I would love to work there.
ghost town or tourist attraction??? the truck at the gas station was obviously planted there, and the footage of the household objects has the cameraman looking at them from behind glass!
