Why are people arguing what is and isn't punk? That is exactly what goes against what punk is, the whole point of punk is that you do/dress/listen to whatever you want to, and not care what other people think. Punk isn't a mohawk, skinhead, short back and sides, leather jacket, shirt and tie, it really doesn't matter. What matters is your attitude, and you people have got it wrong. And if you think punk is dead, you aren't trying hard enough to find it, it definitely is not dead.
@seanie002 - you're right - I love all 70s music including the early 70s - but The Buzzcocks use of one or two notes was brilliant - Ever fallen in love is a classic example.
@A310fan You don't have to have a mohawk or leather jacket to be punk. Punk is mainly rebelling and also being different from the other music that is mainstream. Punk songs can actually be about anything and everything!!!
@A310fan Your saying that anyone who has a mohawk or leather jacket arent punks dumbass. I can totally read english but can u stupid kid? Im saying this again because your too stupid to understand the first time. IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT YOU WEAR! You better know that or imma take that dildo u play with on your butt away from you!
Again, sorry, I cannot understand your childish hieroglypic babbling!
I suggest you take your text language and your mohawk & leather jacket (that you seem to be so fond of!) and use it like the dildo that you seem also to be so fond of and shove it!
You're obviously a member of the intelligence community... NOT!
(plus - 35 thumbs up on my original comment - doesn't that tell you something? Probably not though!) haha!
@A310fan you got 35 thumbs up because people thought that u meant it doesnt matter what you wear but ur calling every person who has leather jacket a person that is not punk? Ramones? Sham 69? Your a fool if you think that wearing normal cloths makes u a punk. You can be punk wearing a leather jacket or normal clothes. And I do not have a mohawk or leather jacket. i wear normal human clothing. plz take that dildo out of your ass you punk poser
@jamjuice1a if you had any brain cells or knew anything about punk whatsoever, you'd understand tht this guy is reffering to the Original punk style & the tru punk way. leather jackets and mohawks came later on with all that crazy annarchaic shit some of which was exclusively voilant for no reason whatsoever, promoted nothing but hatred. I own a leather jacket & yes, punk has no REAL dress code but the the image became symbolic to me of a real violant without message crap, thats when punk died
I`ve never been one to knock a band who plays tribute to their influences. Some renditions are better than others. I love Wall of voodo`s Ring Of rire. Cash fans must have had a fit. Social D did justice on the same tune and quite tasteful. good on you Social D! Thefact is this song is nomore sacred than anything ever done before. Just hope they can live long enough to cash in on cover royalties. Come on, FYC covered them! That is disturbing.

Well heres a bit of history for you Pete Shelly here used to come up to Lowton youth club to watch my band practice always had his parka on even in summer.. have a good one at the 02 arena Pete. remember John H Baz J Steve B Chris D in Taxi and the Naughty Boys, Yig Hughes and Dave Blower
30 years on, and these tunes still stand up. The attitude may be "punk" but the best of these bands - Buzzcocks, the Jam and the Clash, most notably - made some of the most exciting and tuneful rock and roll ever made, "classic" in every sense. I still play "Singles Going Steady" all the time, and my 7 year old son sings and pogo's all over the room to this tune among others.
The whole idea of punk was that it didn't matter if you could play your instruments well. So if someone criticizes a punk band because they don't think they sound professional - well that's the fucking point of punk - you don't have to be a fucking rock star to get on stage with your mates and have some fun. So to all you Buzzcocks haters, go listen to your "Rush" and "Emerson, Lake, & Palmer" records.
Agreed. You don't need a polished sound... in fact if you have an ear for good music then sometimes a raw/unpolished sound can actually sound better. Well, anyway if people think the Buzzcocks suck then it's only because they like to be spoon fed conventional sounding BS.
Seriously though, if you don't believe me and want proof just look at the 70s. There was a HUGE amount of SUCK ASS popular music. Makes me sick thinking about how bad some of that music was. BUT thankfully it also had some actual GOOD music (like The Buzzcocks) that rose up from the underground.
It is no wonder that these bands came out of nowhere with such a passion. Music sucked so bad. Rock is passionate, crude revved up tempos and simple bar chords. Don't believe that it's solos, tones, and BS wailing and crooning...you don't fucking need it. Better off just adding extra harmonies. These bands really did keep us from collectively choking on the conventional BS of the times. Granted turns out there is A LOT of bad music nowadays but imagine how much worse off we could have been.
Buzzcocks are the kind of band that if you don't likne them then you've obviously got no idea about anything and should fuck off and do something else - best singles band ever
Drummer a bit over the top?? He's a bloody genius! Love Pete buggering up the guitar chords after the solo and love the massive, gurning Garth on bass.
Thier songs and their energi really inspires me but I think the drummer is a bit over the top on this one! The first song I heard with The Buzzcocks was Boredom... brilliant song! With "Boredom" "Singles Going Steady" would have been nothing but PERFECT! In my mind "Why can´t I touch it" (#15) is a true gem...
I am 25 years old and was unfortunately raised in a super religious home where the only music played was Bing Crosby and Lawrence Welk. Six years ago, when I had moved out I discovered this song when it was used in the movie Ghost World. The next day I bought Singles Going Steady and in my opinion it is one of the best albums I have ever heard (even if it is a compilation), with every single song being nothing less than excellent. Thanks for posting this.
