@tubemagpie I still stand by what I said (almost a year ago now.) We weren't talking about step dancing anyway, but clogging. I made the point that American clogging is different from original British clogging, and has these other influences. You didn't indicate what your expertise in this dance is...??? I am no expert in clogging, but did a lot of research that substantiates what I said. Influences have passed back and forth forever.

Sorry if I am blathering too much for some. Posts here are limited to 500 characters so I did multiple posts. If it doesn't interest you, move along. and have a nice day.
For British clogging, in contrast, see "Clogfest 2008". "Wallop" is especially fun. So different from American clogging. This all is not just for mossrun, but anyone interested. I don't clog, but took up American country line dance a couple of years back. It has similar origins but also Spanish, French, German, Russian influence. In doing research on that, I stumbled on to clogging. It's great.
There are many many others. A favorite of mine is "Bailey Mountain Cloggers Mountain Legacy 1997." This group from Mars Hills College in N.C. has won numerous awards, performend on Broadway, in Europe, on the BBC etc. I've collected a lot of favorites; these are some of the best but lots more will come up if you watch these.
Also look at "Blue Ridge Mountains Dancers with Pete Seeger," at the R.I. Folk Festival in 1965. Has a couple of the dancers in the previous video I mentioned, grown up. Very African style clogging I would say. Also, "completely Awesome Cloggers," 5 guys on America's Got Talent whose style looks kind of Native American to me. They came within one vote of winning the contest.
Some other good clogging sites to see: "Best Bluegrass Clog Dancing Video Ever Made." A man named Bascom Lunsford made B & W movies of clogging and blugrass songs. This one has people dancing in a living room. Note the pictures on the wall, two portraits look like the matriarch and patriarch of the family, she decidely Native American, he European. Words are limited here so I move on.
@mossrun. Bluegrass music is indeed of Celtic origins, plus African and other influences. Both Scots and Irish settled by the thousands in the American south, including the Southern Highlands (Blue Ridge and Smoky Mts.) Some married into Native American tribes, and also integrated with Africans. The music and dance definitely has African and some Native American in it.
@1chisai No way! Step dancing and its music stems from the British Isles as a whole and England in particular. In addition much of what is called African American has roots in European music , often more than Africa. As for American Indian influence...Ho Ho!
Not that any of this really matters: It's what exists and is played and danced today that really matters.
You guys are GREAT! I am from WV. I think the clog might have had it's roots in the Irish jig. The Irish settled all down the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains & Celtic music was probably the precursor of bluegrass : )
