@Brainconvulsion Do it! I got a fretlless four string dean. It sounds way better than my 5 string ibanez! It can also get a sick muddy growl on the low notes even in standard tuning. It's my favorite of all my basses now.
@Ryu12543 I was bummed out about him leaving too but we saw Obscura live in Singapore a few weeks ago. The new bass player's pretty damn good too. I personally can't wait for their next record with this new guy on board.
I have to admit that I liked Obscura coming in as a Thesseling fan as well but I've found a greater appreciation for the band as a whole.
@Ryu12543 I talked with Kummerer backstage, when he had a show with his second band Thulcandra and asked him about Thesseling's leaving. He told me, Thesseling did hardly anything and about 80-90% of the Basslines on Omnivium and Cosmogenesis were actually written by other band members.
@metalade88 Really? That's pretty depressing. Here I was thinking he was a musical genius. At least he's an extremely talented musician. Kinda like John Kempainen of The Black Dahlia Murder.
@Ryu12543 I also think it's kind of sad, because I thought, he was a genius, too and he was kind of an idol for me. Steffen said, he didn't even write the bass solos of which he says that they were dedicated to his girlfriend.
On a video somewhere Thesseling said he wrote and recorded the solo for Orbital elements in 8 mins, and somewhere else he said he doesn't write the main parts for his lines but does occasionally contribute to them, so he isn't really as good as most people think but he is still a serious player.
@TomA475 Of course he is a serious player, he in fact does play impossible bass lines. But seeing that he has been studying e-bass and his microtonality stuff, you may think that he could do more.
@metalade88 Well in Obscura and Pestilence Jeroen plays, for the most part, a respectful supportive role. So, to solely base his ability to play bass based on his work in both bands would be an injustice. Right now he's actually working on a jazz/fusion project with Italian guitar player and keyboardist Tommy Talamanca, so hopefully then we will see his true colors, as not only bassist, but a musician.
@OndskapensHersker Yaa I'm fairly certain I was stoned when I posted that which would explain the wrong title. But I like how its still the top comment lol.
The fretless bass really works in metal... who would have guessed it?

I'm glad you have another version that wasn't muted. I can't believe Thesseling left Obscura, he was amazing.

Yeah, he plays an Ibanez BTB that they converted fretless. It's no Warwick but it got the job done!
