The urge to move away from emotions is not innate, but learned. People who are fortunate enough to grow up being loved in their sorrow will not have the urge to move away from or distract from sorrow. Sorrow is deeply connecting, (life affirming as you put it), and very lovely when felt freely. But, if those feelings are not welcomed, one will learn to not "go there" so to speak, causing it to be scary, and painful later in life.
Hey! Have you heard about anxiety zero technique (I think its at anxiety0.info)? Ive heard some great things about it and my father pretty much cured panick attacks with it.
