@Earthlinked His protective straps weren't working correctly and snapped when he hit the wall and he had severe head and chest fractures, which ended up killing him. NASCAR promoted the HANS device, which is more protective, because of his death.

He was not forced into wearing it!! I always figured that the hood hit him in the head - I remember seeing that hood violently slamming on the top of the car - MANY times!!! Not a race fan - but always liked Earnhardt - "Charging" Charlie Glotzback (showing my age a bit) and of course King Richard!!!!!!!!

i left another comment below about dales show car, but that wasnt the only time i got close to the man or his machine. i met him in 1994 at C.Weaver chevy in utica ny. it was midway through the season.we had to wait for a long time in a long line but was it ever worth it. i told him about the day i saw his car.. he signed our stuff, but then he said as we were leaving. HEY! come here, i sat and talked with DALE EARNHARDT for 45 minutes while he signed autographs. thank god for Dale Earnhardt.

I went to my aunt & uncle's house to watch the Daytona 500, 2001. After the crash, I hung around... just hoping for some word that everything was gonna be okay. Finally I decided to go home..... later that evening the news broke. I was devastated & NASCAR hasn't been the same since. Yeah... I still watch, but I always wonder how different it would be today if he was still around.

Thank you so much for making this video. It is heart-wrenching and I cried from start to end.I'll never forget the day we lost Dale and watching Junior grow up in the last seven years has been amazing.
